this is a basic responsibility of a sovereign nation. it is also an urgent requirement of our national security. our objectedive is straightforward. the borders should be open to trade and lawful immigration. and shut to illegal immigrants as well as criminals, drug dealers, and terrorists. i was the governor of a state that has a 1200 mile border with mexico. so i know how difficult it is to enforce the border and how important it is. since i became president we have increased funding for border security by 66% and expanded the border patrol from about 9,000 to 12,000 agents. the men and women of our border patrol are doing a fine job in difficult circumstances. and over the past five years, they have apprehended and sent home about 6 million people entering america illegally. despite this progress, we do not yet have full control of the border. and i am determined to change that. tonight i am calling on congress to provide funding for dramatic improvements for man power and technology at the border. by the end of 2008 we will increase t

any longer will be regime change in a sovereign nation. don't think that should be part of our official policy. people say that they don't like that the president set a red line and didn't honor it. i think the president did exactly what he said he would do with respect to the red line on chemical weapons. if you use them, we're going to take action. we did. there was a diplomatic follow-on. chemical weapons stockpile has been destroyed. i think the president did what he said he would do there. what the president should not have said, i don't think we should be in the business of saying assad must go or others must go. we don't set the timetable for change in regime in other nations. we've been bad at it when we tried and we should step back from thinking we should set it. i don't think assad is a butcher. these crimes are horrible, the barrel bombing, the chemical weapons. they violated many international protocols. but we still don't set the timetable of a regime change for another nation. we should be out of the regime change business.
