the plan was to release the young red kite, called spencer, back into the wild, if he could be nursedack to health by staff at a wildlife centre. yet because of the trauma he'd suffered, they had no idea how spencer would react to being set free. sharuna sagar has the story. starting, dehydrated, barely alive, spencer, the red kite was rescued from a country road and taken to a bird of prey centre in hexham. spent the whole night with spencer, a syringe with a tube, straight down into his stomach, with a high—protein rehydration fluid, just you would get if you are a human in intensive care. and we do that every two hours until the bird either recovers 01’ retires.

spencer this -- this is problematic all over california. >> it really is, larry. especially here in the northern and central parts of the state where we have so many major fires burning at once. now, this red flag warning is in effect until 11:00 p.m. tomorrow for a wide area, including the areas where the fires are burning right now to our north and over to the east into the sierra and the sierra ridge and foothills. the ridge is -- the gusts will be generally 25 to 35 miles per hour in those areas due north of the bay area. in the east area of the sierra the gusts will be up to 65 miles per hour with dangerously low relative humidity. looking at the ranch fire and the river fire, you can see that it's about 90 degrees in both locations and the wind is gusting to 27 miles per hour. and we expect wind gusts to just taper off a little bit during the overnight hours, and perhaps pick up again to the levels wrer seeing today by midday tomorrow. so the red flag warning is in effect for an expansive area. and i guess you want to know what that means to the average pers

let's get to spencer christian. >>> this is a massive storm, the center of the storm is just under 200 miles south/southwest of the big island. notice its path is expected to go northward, category 3 tomorrow, and passing just south of honolulu as category one on saturday, continuing to weaken moving farther back to sea. look at the tremendous amount of rain the storm is already producing and will continue to produce across the islands. now a hurricane warning is now in effect for basically the eastern two-thirds of the chain of islands in hawaii, and a hurricane watch is in effect for the western most islands. rainfall totals through 11:00 a.m. sunday, we project on the big island and on maui, six to eight inches or more, generally. i saw in areas hardest hit could receive up to 30 inches of rain from the storm. talking about maui in the big island, not across the entire chain of islands, and wave heights will be elevated up to 30 feet or higher. at the peak of the storm, as it gets -- as it moves to its closest proximity to those islands. they're huge waves, larry and kristen? >> for
