i'm stacy cohan. back to you. >> thank you. you all stay safe out there. let's check in with julie wright for the latest on how traffic is moving elsewhere. >> good morning. yesterday morning, we started off our show at 40 and i mentioned i saw a number of trucks out there. not the case today. i didn't see anybody out at all this morning. it is a slippery commute. have you to slow it down out there on the roadways. this is the top stretch of the beltway at university boulevard. it is the left lane that still has the snow cover that you are dealing with and it is slick. on the and off-ramps have not been touched. pretty much that live shot from stacy cohan is telling you what you can expect as you try to exit to and from the major arteries. neighborhood streets have not been touched. parking lots have not been touched either. it is getting to the major arteries that will cost you a lot of time. the road is narrow. you think it is bad enough with four lanes in rush hour and now you are narrowed down to two. on the south side oftown, not so bad. we have all l

stacy cohan has a look at the conditions there. >> reporter: it is not a good story out here. the road conditions are like they are in much of the region, snow covered, just dusted but underneath the snow, it is slick and icy. a lot of cars have been skidding out here. montgomery and prince george's county have had some of the worst conditions we've seen all morning. maryland state highway says they do have crews out now salting and sanding the major roadways but right here we're on georgia avenue not too far from blair road and although rush hour hasn't begun in full force yet, these roads are not well traveled enough to cause any clear of the lanes. if they should have to stop studley, they will have a difficult time. it is also bitter cold. please take that into consideration. if you have children, dress them this many, man, man layers. my photographer and i were trying to count all the layers we have on and i think we're up to six. it is still cold when the winds come through. it cut -- it cuts just like a knife. the roads don't look dangerous but we were skidding everywhe

stacy cohan is out with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. earlier today, we were a bit farther south in virginia at woodbridge. some folks i spoke to said they had been driving up from as far south as stafford and the snow in that area was quite intense. you can see everybody here is moving at speed. we have some flakes falling and there is a dufght on the grassy -- there is a dusting on the grassy areas. other than that, the roadways seem clear. it is the first flakes of the year and that gets people excited. there may be a few slippery spots. it was wet out there. we have all that rain this weekend. but for now, it shouldn't be a huge traffic concern in this area and closer into the city. certainly, if you are traveling from farther south and western portions and we have a little coating of snow i am able to show you. no snowballs, no snowmen, just a few flakes to let us know winter on its way. back to you. >> thank you. >>> not technically wasn'ter wasn't -- winter yet but some cities are feeling the weather. we talked about the collapse

our stacy cohan is live at the foggy bottom metro stop in northwest with more now. stacy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and this threat targeted metro stations and not too far from georgetown, foggy bottom metro and it is busy. this is a pattern, this is not the first time about potential terrorists saying metro may be a target. this particular suspect was caught on facebook. this is how it unfolded. an informant from new orleans contacted the fbi and talked about the postings that were referring to a terrorist attack in washington. one of the potential targets was the underground sewer system under georgetown and another was the metro rail system. the informant said back on november 20th the man posted a description of how to make a pipe bomb and how to make them cause the maximum damage. now federal agents moved in on the man's arlington, virginia home back on december 5th. that is after a message in which he clearly was on to the informant and threatened this person for leaking information. we spoke to an expert who talked about why it's so important to

stacy cohan is live near the pentagon this morning with more. stacy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we have a lot to talk about for people that ride metro. we are here live at the pentagon station where apparently there was a report of a suspicious package in the 7:00 hour. this morning somebody saw something in a trash can. they shut down the pentagon metro station and used shuttle bus service to get folks around. at the end of the day the pentagon police department was able to determine it was a christmas ornament and everything is returning to normal here at the pentagon. now to the other metro-related story. this one involves a plot or alleged terrorist plot of a virginia man who was saying he would have a terrorist strike against metro station and georgetown. this is all revealed via facebook. the fbi got a tip from a friend on facebook and he posted that he planned to put a bomb under the sewer system in georgetown or make a pipeline bomb for the metro. police moved into his home on december 5th after a message that threatened the

. >> -- stacy cohan joins us on the telephone right now with the conditions. >> reporter: we are seeing a good steady amount of rainfall. it is sticking to the ground but only for a moment. as soon as the cars pass over it, you are getting more of a wet condition. anybody that is heading out from the south down here in woodbridge or further south in the manassas area, you are certainly going to see snow. the grass is getting coated. it is actually quite pretty out here. we haven't seen any problems on the roadways yet. i can see the beltway and one of the ramps heading to the beltway, and although traffic is thick, it seems to be moving fairly steadily. so enough snow to perhaps draw interest, perhaps for you to consider caution but for the children, it will be a bit more to look at and i don't think it is going to interfere with their school day. i'm sure they're very sorry to hear. back to you. >> thank you. >>> right now, we want to take a look at the other local headlines. everything is back to normal on route 50 in anne arundel county. the highway was shut down for much of the even

stacy cohan is live in silver spring this morning with more. stacy? >> reporter: well good morning. and it is finally good out here. if you can take a look at the roadways, just wet now. a few patches of a little snow in the corners but it's gone for the most part. now i did get some calls and texts from folks in montgomery county who were driving through the back roads and told me that some of the back roads were tricky but most people were proceeding with caution. perhaps they took our advice this morning. it is bitter cold and windy out here. and as you were saying, it will be that way for all day long. but it looks like rush hour has wrapped up through here and people are porceeding with-- proceeding with caution. and we saw some skidding and fort worths but nothing serious. and i heard you talking about more snow. maybe this was our warm-up run. next time let's do better. this morning was a difficult ride with the salt and sand trucks getting out at 3:00 a.m. and they were behind the curve and it's ust caught up now to where everybody can drive smoothly. i'm stacy cohan, back t

stacy cohan this morning is at a salt dome in alexandria with all the details. good morning. >> good morning. these are the folk you want -- the folks you want to see during a snowstorm. the folk with the salt and sand that will make your roads clear. i know it is just an inch to 3 inches. but it is the first snow. we had a little snow earlier this week and washingtonians, we don't like to see the snow on the roads. in the district, they were out brining the roads yesterday so pretreating them. they will be out in full force today. the same goes in maryland where the roads were pre-treated. they are telling us they will concentrate in prince george's county and south of there. v-do the treated the main roads in virginia yesterday and they plan to have the trucks out in force by 7:00 a.m. in montgomery county, can you check snow plow status. this is real time online tracking with street by street plowing information on the web site. there is various colors. some colors indicate the plowing is in progress or that it hasn't started. one thing you can't say is hey,

stacy cohan following our top story this morning.  >>> we check northwest delays that arere when it comes to schools. most it was to the west because of dangerous wind chill situations out there. western maryland, garrett county schools and in allegheny county, the mountain ridge school district on a two-hour delay. in west virginia, grant, hampshire, hardy, jefferson, mineral and morgan county schools are all on two-hour delays. >>> rappahannock county schools in virginia are closed today because of a water issue. they are closed today for winds or whatever. could it be possible that they would be closed again because of snow? >> not today and not tomorrow. but we'll have to see about friday because we'll get a light snow event tomorrow afternoon into tomorrow evening's rush. i'll show you more on that coming up. we'll be fine this morning. just bitter cold across much of the area with temperatures in the teens and low 20s. that is set to continue for another day. here is a look at your current conditions. 3 at rig -- 23 at reagan national. chicago, good morning, four for

stacy cohan is live in alexandria with more on the road situation. stacy, have you seen a flake yet? >> reporter: no flakes. i'm okay with that. they're coming i'm sure. and just to make sure they are ready here in virginia, check it out, there is a long line of trucks and plows and spreaders and they are all waiting for us. and everybody has been in a really good mood. see, he is waving. how are you going? rock on. it's the first snow of the year and we're going to grin and bear it and a good feeling to get ahead of the curve as they are doing here in d.c., virginia and maryland. and so even though there is no snow, if you look on 495 in alexandria, i spoke to an official who said there is a line of snowplows south of us stretching around the highway. they are ready, they are waiting to be deployed. so one inch, three inches, they are equipped to handle even more because what they don't want to hear for the first snow of the year is that it was mishandled or anybody was slipping or sliding and with the potential for this coinciding with afternoon rus

stacy cohan is in alexandria with more on the situation there. stacy? >> reporter: well good morning. we are at the salt dome and watching the crews come and the crews go and everybody get loaded up. the loader has been sitting there all morning and we've seen various trucks come in and get their load of salt and sand and head out. there are no snowflakes falling as of yet, so it's true the roads are clear but it's ready to have them out and ready than to have folks trying to catch up than getting behind the snow. down here they are ready. d.c., maryland and virginia pretreated the roads last night and out in full force this morning with crews spread out waiting for the snow to begin falling because it will stick. and the best way to avoid a really messy rush hour is to treat the roads so as soon as it sticks we have sand and salt to melt it down and smooth out the roadways to get through. so we are waiting for the snow to fall but we are ready for it, i guess. we hope. back to you. >> stacy, thank you. >>> the latest on the morning commute. we'll check
