nbc bay area stephanie stanton joins us in los angeles where the verdict was announced late this afternoonat's the reaction thus far down there? >> well, reaction here is mixed. this trial lasted fiveç months. these jurors deliberated for roughly 14 hours. in the end this jury of six men and six women found that aeg live is not liable for michael jackson's death. as you can imagine, there has been reaction from both sides here outside the courtroom. the verdict was read in a series of questions. not your typical fashion. the jury unanimously agreed that aeg live did hire dr. conrad murray, the doctor convicted for involuntary manslaughter for the death of michael jackson. a no to the second question, this was 10-2, whether murray was unfit or incompetent to perform the work he was hired seasonally let the concert promoter off the hook and ended the case right then and there. we were told michael jackson's mother katherine burst into tear s. she along with michael jackson's three children were the ones that filed this case. they were seeking at least $290 million in damages. at this point

happening or not happening in washington, i want to bring in "washington post" dana milbank and john stanton, welcome, gentlemen. as you know meetings in washington always lead to action and progress for the american people. that's why we have a close -- >> that's a hash tag. >> on the camera. >> i want to run a theory by you, it seems we have a house that's generally dysfunctional and does little without a super majority. we had a congressman telling us about that and then we have exceptions, situations like the violence against women act vote, t.a.r.p. initially, which went down and then reversed, certain issues that because of extraordinarily public pressure change that dysfunctional dynamic. it seems to me that sooner or later the debt ceiling, whether it's at the ninth inning or tenth inning will probably follow that t.a.r.p. like model. why is that right or wrong? >> you're a little right and little wrong. it's not going to be like t.a.r.p. where you have a one time deal. most folks believe in the fext four or five or ten days there will be something that happens on debt ceiling. but i

phoenix is a great example, the mayor of phoenix, greg stanton, is a democrat. i'm the mayor of the 38th largest city in the country. most of the mayors in the phoenix metro area of republican. there are more people served by republican mayors than democratic mayors and yet we don't get as much notice. we don't get integrated into the party as others do. and that's a huge mistake and a hu huge lost opportunity. >> what kind of impact will this mistake have on national politics? >> i think what it does is it removes a voice of common sense. i think some of the problems we're seeing in washington are now we know that washington politicians are out of touch. they don't see their constituents in the local grocery store. they don't have to get things done. if they don't pick up the trash on a thursday like mayors do, we hear from it. so that lack of accountability, that lack of having to answer to a broad case constituency, i think hurts republicans because republicans have a great message. and when you look at mayors and look and see how we govern, it's a message th
