they were freshmen at north carolina a&t state university, a historically black university here. they came to the store, sat at the lunch counter and asked to order i believe some coffee and a piece of pie. the response was really mixed. "you boys go on from here," i think another waitress was saying, "we don't serve colored people here.” the word spread quickly the next day that this was going to be ongoing and that other people were wanting to get involved. other adults were showing up there were other students that said we want to be part of this. students from bennett college and what is now uncg but was at the time women's college. other students who wanted to get involved and stand behind this brave, courageous step. they weighed the consequences. they talked about being afraid but they also talked about what i would say that courage many is not the lack of fear, it's doing what is right in the face of fear. it's the way they decided to finally come here and take the step that day. so they talked about the community, talked about law enforcement, they talked about the polic

university. you're in a state which features colleges like vanderbilt university and the university of tennessee college system. how do you sell your university to students particularly african-american students who aren't just sitting going to your university? >> guest: well first of all we have quite a reputation and history and tradition of academic excellence, leadership excellence and in fact we also have a social justice excellence aura that we got from years ago and the notion is if you want to be involved and you want to be apart of something fairly special come to fisk university. not only do you walk these hollow wood grouse and get to feel the sense of what it means to be a scholar, what it means to be a leader, what it means to be involved and engaged and concerned about social justice issues you could only get that by being here. we talk all the time about encouraging students and getting them to take a look at fisk but we know when they visit this campus we have a great chance of capturing them if you will. the alums always say what you may think you are choosing fisk fisk actually

one at michigan state university and another at arkansas state university studied the role that one linel media plays in radicalization and will help develop more effective techniques and partnerships for counter-messaging. beyond these new methods, we are hopeful we can have methods and insights gleaned from existing law enforcement strategies that have proved successful in other contexts and adapt them for use against the threat of violent extremism. we are learning there are similarities in the factors that lead to gang involvement and violent extremism. in both instances, the sense of longing to way calls, however misguided, may be a lure to disaffected young people, and understanding this link may help us tackle the problem of violent extremism. there are several antigang initiatives that have had success in the past, and the lessons learned from those may be potentially apply to issues we are discussing today. in order to examine this connection, we have initiated a study at the university of maryland that is exploring similarities between violent extremist groups and criminal gang

then you have some that even with other universities the traditional have a program within it rather large. like arizona state salt program and others around the country and lynn university where they have programs that will focus for these students. when these students are visiting, that should be a part of their agenda, to visit the service -- sometimes it's called a disability center, they have various names, talk to whomever is in charge, find out what is required as it's evaluated during the admission process. the issue will be, of course, whether or not they wish to disclose this as they apply. that's always left up to the family, but i feel that this is very important. even for students who may not have these services available to them, these authorizations many colleges have some type of academic support on campuses anyway. >> that's great. that's encouraging. >> your book deals in large part on financial aid. when should students and parents start applying or filling out that application for financial aid? >> right now it's available for students who are seniors. it opened january 1 for one parent an
