joining me now just back from her trip to central america is stefanie. on the ground in mexico city is kristina. thank you, both. stefanie you've been traveling through honduras, guatemala, and el salvador. what do you see happening to these kids? >> one of the things we noticed almost immediately on the ground in honduras, which is one of the most violent cities in one of the most violent countries in the world is the near universal desire among young people to leave their homes and make this trek to the u.s. that took us all off guard. we looked closely, too, at why they want to make the trek. and the reasons behind it. it's more complicated than a lot of people make it appear. there are a multitude of reasons. the violence, for sure, the economy with is definitely part of it. and the fact that a lot of these kids know people or have family members that have left, made the trip to the u.s., and have been allowed to stay. >> and ste, stefanie, you showe a clear fashion there's a whole infrastructure of crime created to handle this transportation. >> the

stefanie dekker is at the rafa crossing. what are you seeing, do we know how long the crossing will be open for? >> at the moment only egyptian nationals can cross. one bus came through. that's egypt behind us, that's how close we are. it's dependent. the border crossing has been open four times in the last 100 days, the director told us. today is a day that follows mahmoud abbas to the egyptian president saying "help us, the sways in gaza is difficult. the border is now open for egyptian nationals and those injured in the bombing." we speak to the hospital. none of the injured have arrived. we have been here for a couple of hours. they say they are preparing the paperwork. it may only be six or seven cases and there are other critically injured cases and they can't be moved. stefanie dekker reporting from gaza, talking about the dire humanitarian situation. we spoke to a nor weegon doctor working at the shiffa hospital in gaza, here is what he has to say. >> right now we are operating on amputation injuries, and shrapnels that the israelis are shelling against the local areas. these may cause internal bleedings, and other life-threatening situations. and it's very durk to see the large -- disturbing to see the large numbers of civilians and the children. what is remarkable with the palestinians in gaza is the resill gens. they don't give up. they stand tall. i'm amazed to see the calm in the community and among the staff. today i think it's three medical doctors who had the homes shat ared which is -- shattered by israeli attacks. the psychological effect is the more they bomb, the more they are convinced and determinate that they will not give up. they will not yield to the pressure. they stand tall and say calmly that they are used to this. we will help our people. i think despite the fact that they are exhausted by the palpable determ

talking to me in the last hour, and stefanie dekker joins me now. she went to the hospital where a lot of the wounded were taken, and stephanie, tell us what you saw there. >> well, we actually tried to get to the school after we got the news, and there was heavy shelling in the area, and it was ongoing. just to give you an idea of how close it was around the school, a lot of cars were racing back and telling us to leave. and it was a horrendous scene. children, little boys, little girls, petrified, crying, injured. with the shrapnel wounds, and resaw ladies being brought in on stretchers and men, and a combination. and families, and absolute panic and terror. one woman was screaming and no one could calm her down. asking why this was a place of safety? the northern border area, where there has been intense shelling and fighting between the israelis and the palestinian army, these are supposed to be safe havens, and it's interesting to have a lot of people say that they're angry at unare a, and they're blaming them for not keeping them safe. they ha

. >>> and the latest now from gaza with stefanie dekker, who joins us live. when we spoke about an hour or so ago there was intense bombing in gaza. what is the situation right now? >> it's the same. we have moved locations. we'll get a better view. we'll show you, that's the neighbourhood of where we were yesterday. it was heavily pounded with artillery fire. that seems to go on again. i want to update you on a message received from the health ministry, saying the israeli army is using white phosphorous. this is something we need to confirm independently. this is something that was used in 2008/2009, the war there. if it is confirmed, it's alarming. it burns through flesh. you can only stop it by using a chemical. it's aggressive. if confirmed, it will be - it is illegal to be used on heavily populated civilian areas, and the area you are looking at, shajaiya, there's shelling going on further down. it looks like they are trying to clear this whole eastern border area. i'm told the areas are some of the most heavily populated in the gaza strip , it is alread

stefanie dekker is in gaza city. the upside is the hospital.hey were wary, looking at the diplomacy side of things. there's a lot of diplomacy. the u.n. scenario in doha meeting with hamas leaders. as well as president mahmoud abbas. with israel intensifying the campaign, does it look like we might be seeing perhaps a troos or a ceasefire. >> you know, it's important to remember that diplomacy was on the table last week after the egyptian initiative. the credibility of the initiatives was not accepted because of the relation shared between hamas and the new government in egypt. more important is actually what israelies are facing in last 48 hours. it doesn't seem that they are making any progress. it's clear that they are facing real problems on the ground. let's remember why this operation was, from the beginning. it was, according to the israelis, is to mill tarrize hamas, weakening hamas, to end the tunnels. none of those goals has been achieved so far. hamas is still strong. hamas is still attracting israelis, trying to target more of the m

we'll go live to stefanie dekker in gaza. it's been an intense few hours for residents of gaza city. bring us up to speed as to what has been happening and what you see on the ground. >> it's been an intense night and morning. thousands have been fleeing. in the morning, from 5 o'clock in the morning, we left around s seven, and we saw many walking towards us, carrying children, cars with white flags, trying to make sure they did not get hit from above because there's a lot of air strikes and artillery. that is the main use that israelis are using. we went to shifa hospital, the biggest hospital in the gaza strip , and a steady stream of ambulances coming in, bringing in the wounded and dead. we saw a dead lady with severe injuries to her head. we saw the elderly, it's indiscriminate. han civilians, a -- many civilians, a more weegean doctor. told us that it is the worst he has seen it, it's a massacre, israelis are indiscrime nantly firing. israelis will tell you that is where hamas hides its rockets and tunnel systems, it's

. >>> all right, let's go lie to al jazeera's stefanie dekker in gaza. you came out a short while ago from one of the hardest hit neighbourhoods in shajaiya. tell us what you saw. >> we saw absolute destruction. homes destroyed. we went on two of the main roads and all the houses lining it were all massive holes in them from artillery fire, which is what we know was an intense night and day until the humanitarian hiatus, as it's called, took place. it was tense. some people were leaving, sfimians that hadn't -- civilians that hadn't managed to leave. one woman was cursing against the palestinian president, against other countries to allow them to go through the hell. another man said he couldn't get out with the children, so he cowered under the stares of his home. a small boy was crying. he said they can't get back to houses because they were shot at. ambulances came in. some dead bodies were removed. civil defense men were there, fire engines, smoke down the road that we didn't reach. difficult to travel up the road because trees have been knocked down

they are expected to heed that call. >> we'll go to stefanie dekker, live from gaza. we are looking at a live shot of the gaza skye line. stephanie was tells us earlier that the offensive that was planned to hit northern gaza has begun. how is it playing out? >> well, it's quiet at the moment. we are hearing that there was one air strike in an area towards the north. people still extremely on edge, waiting braced for this to happen. many people have left their homes, the u.n. agency for palestinian refugees tells us that more people are streaming in. some are remaining up north, waiting, perhaps, they say - one girl we heard from said she'd wait to see what would happen, and if needed there was a shelter in the north. they'd start moving. people waiting to see when this will happen. they are expecting something harsh. it will be short and temporary, it will be strong. they did give 12 o'clock. perhaps they'll give it a little more time to make sure people can leave if they want to leave. it put people on edge, more than they are. >> why are they focussing on that area

stefanie dekker was at the scene of a hard-hit area in gaza. >> reporter: it's in the small details where you see lives interrupted. at the edge of the building, you see a child's stickers and towels - something where when israel strikes, there's no time for people to get out. sometimes they have issued a warning strike. there's no escape if you are in here. the scene of devastation is huge. half of the building is gone. apartments are blown out. you look at signs of who used to live here. there's child toys, a baby pram. it tells us that families are being absolutely affected by the bombing campaign. the death toll is rising. women and children are amongst the dead. israel says this is a military campaign against different armed factions, it is the people who are affected. they are terrified. many tell you that they feel they have been discarded by the arab countries, the international community, that this is something they need to put up with and they are petrified about how this will play out. >> stefanie dekker in gaza. i spoke to the deputy director of the palestine center in washing

. >> stefanie dekker sent us this report from gaza. >> reporter: it's been a night of intensive air strikes in gaza, as the morning came, there has been more targets. one car hit, we are hearing another couple of bombings in the background. this is a sustained campaign overnight, an intensive provision surrounding the gaza port around 2:30. a massive missile hit the place and shook. we are told that the men who managed to infiltrate israel, targetting the military base, they believe the men leave from the port to make their way north. they are trying to clamp down on that, and more homes destroyed. this is israel's way. they are targetting homes bel g belonging to members of hamas. civilians, family members have been pulled up in this and other incidents keeping people off the streets. it highlights the dangers. people were gathered. a missile struck. seven dead, 15 injured. it adds to the terrifying fear that people have. they are staying home, streets are empty, and they are not gathering at all. it's a tense time, and they are thinking that perhaps it could get worse with a threat of a p

let's go to our correspondent stefanie dekker, live at the rafa hospital in gaza. firstly, this u.n.-brokered humanitarian pause that israel and palestinian factions signed up to. what is going to happen? >> well, that's taking effect right now. actually for the next five hours. what we expect to happen, what we were told by the u.n. is we'll have time to bring in humanitarian supplies, fix things like electricity lines, water pipes, sewerage, things that have been ruined during the bombardment. it has been intense. a lot of people left their homes, they don't have access to water. some 70,000 people have not had access to water for a week. let me tell you where i am at the rafa hospital. it's on the border of israel. i'll step out of frame and show you that this hospital was hit a couple of days ago on the fourth floor by an israeli air strike. the israeli calls it telling the patients and doctors to evacuate. there's eight international solidarity activists trying to prevent it happening. it's owned by hamas, which is perhaps why the israelis are trying to target it. it has patient

>> stefanie dekker reporting there.arlier today, i talked to the deputy director, a program for the from the u.n., scott anderson as part of a team trying to provide food and shelter for palestinian refugees. i asked about the cycle of violence and the effect it's having on the civilian population? >> i have been in gaza since february of 2008. i was here at the end of 2008, 2009, i was here during 2012, and the hardest thing, i guess, to accept is as you make friends with people both here in gaza and in israel is that it's just normal people that are the most impacted. they have to find a way to rebuild their lives over and over again. i am very hopeful when the diplomats talk not only about a truce but also a way to address the underlying conditions that lead to these eveninglations. >> currently within our shelters, we have 165,000 people that have had to flee their homes from across mostly eastern gaza and northern gaza to try to escape the fighting that's gone on between israel and the people here in gaza. 165,000

let's speak to stefanie dekker, joining us on the phone now. a few minutes ago you were outside the shifa hospital and there was intense activity at the shops. bring us up to speed with what is happening there. >> that's right, there was speaking outside a hospital. it was not clear who was shooting at who. it was a tense situation, you have the hospital guards on high alert, people coming in. we saw a man carry a dead child. people are screaming, they are suspicious. it's a desperate theme. people are desperately. they don't know what to do, where to go. they walked 5km at dawn. they couldn't get out. they were blockaded in there. suffering under intense shelling. now, it's slowly becoming apparent, we got pictures out of there. we are hearing stories, ambulance is able to get in about what the scene is, and it is horrific. dead bodies in the street. a local journalist confirmed dead. a cameraman trying to film. it is dangerous and difficult. one of the doctors at the hospital said to us come and see, and we have. there are desperate scenes of

stefanie dekker joins us live from gaza. i'm hearing that israel was planning on offensive that is due to start any minute now in the north of gaza. any news on that? >> let me just show you - we heard an air strike in the last 30 seconds. the smoke is clearing. we are told that the israeli army has given people living in the north of gaza strip until midday, now, to leave their homes and move inland, because they say being close to hamas is not safe, and the area, just close to the border with israel - it is a place that hamas uses to launch the rockets into israel. they say that they'll be undertaking a short and temporary campaign, but certainly we expect it to be strong. we have not seen - you can see it from here, the north. we have not seen anything happen, and the border crossing, the border acrossing into israel. it is open. we are waiting to see how this will play out. we do know that the u.n. agency for palestinian refugees. we have subpoena to them. they have opened eight schools and are ready to take in more. aro

. >>> now, live to another of our correspondents in gaza, stefanie dekker is outside the she hava hospital in -- she'sa hospital in gaza. what is the situation there after last night's shelling. >> there has been a stream of people coming into gaza city. we saw hundreds of people on foot, families, carrying their children's, cars, packed with families on top of the cars to indicate that they shouldn't be a target. it's been a relentless night. one of fear. many have been injured, 33 dead once ambulances finally get into the eastern areas along the border. a lot of those people coming from that neighbourhood, what we saw inside, and seconds of desperation. and we saw a dead woman calling in small children are horrific injuries, it's a war with the highest toll. i want to bring in the director of operations from the u.n. agency dealing with palestinian refuge refugees. can you describe what happened overnight and now? >> what we so is a carry on over the past two days, an incursion and a lot of damage. thousands of people on the move. we went - yesterday we had 30,000 additional people movin

stefanie dekker joins us live from gaza. you were at a hospital an hour ago, but the hospitals a too dangerous. >> there was a shooting episode outside the hospital. we are not sure what happened. it was tense. to understand that it's because there was a steady stream of balances coming in, dead children. it's understandable that the people are incredibly distraught. the guards were getting nervous. we have been there for a whale. we decided to leave. we are back at the bureau, you can hear the relentless shelling, and you have a shot of the eastern border. massive... [ siren ] ..there's a lot of ambulances coming down the road, but have not managed to get into the center of those areas. hamas were being told, tried to ask for a 3-hour ceasefire so that the ambulances could reach the area. israel denied that. so as we heard from dr gill berd, we spoke to, i spoke to him at the hospital. he said, you know, in times of war, these are war crimes. civilians should have a safe passage, they shouldn't be targeted. it's not even a

stefanie dekker saw them running from the attack and witnessed the strike that killed them. >> reporter: they had been playing near a shack on the beach. the four cousins, 11-year-old, 10-year-old, 9-year-old and 10-year-old boys are dead. >> translation: my back is broken. >> reporter: the raw agony of a father. the attack happened in broad daylight in front of our hotel. i took the picture after two strikes on a beach shack. you can see four boys running away. then there was another bang. this picture shows people carrying away a body from a shack that was hit. the other bound ris were up the beach where they had run for safety. "god should punish israel", mohammed's mother cries. the boys were buried. many asking why innocent children are targeted by the israeli army. we see israel for rehabilitation. based on preliminary results the target of this strike was hamas occupants. the investigation is ongoing. this strike took place in front of two hotels, filled with journalists. no one knows what was in the shack. there was no secondary explosion suggesting weapons were kept there. we w

stefanie dekker reports. >> reporter: there has been more air strikes overnight. we are hearing resident at the border areas have been getting recorded messages from their phone telling them to leave their homes. many people had left their homes following that kind of announcement a couple of days ago aring moving inland to gaza city to schools that are run. they had returned because they thought things would calm down. once again the people moving. it highlights an example of the siege here. that is that people have nowhere to go. they are not in charge of their borders and they don't believe gaza. they are interstate. they want it to end. there is a siege on gaza, and the economy is under a dire situation. salaries haven't been paid. the workers in the hospitals, ambulance drivers have not been paid. their situation is difficult. they want things to improve. with that news coming from the israeli army, worried about how things will play out. nick schifrin is in gaza, i asked him about how people were reacting to the failure of the ceasefire. >> good evening. a c
