nbc's stephanie gosk is in the rebel-held town of tobruk. stephanie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. well, the fighting in the strategic part of libya seemed to have stalled the last couple of days, but today pro-gadhafi forces launched a fierce attack. the rebels holding the small desert town of ras lanuf were hit so hard today by pro-gadhafi forces, there was nothing left to do but turn and run. the government is making its move into rebel-held east libya, and the front line is moving with it. >> it's time for liberation. it's time for action. we are moving now. >> reporter: in the last week, both sides have fought for control of two of the country's largest oil facilities. it was only a matter of time before it led to this. the ras lanuf oil terminal in flames. on wednesday, libya's oil minister said production has been cut by two-thirds since the unrest began, but that the government was still firmly in control of the country's resources. not exactly, say these oil workers. this is the oil terminal in tobruk, eastern liby

nbc's stephanie gosk is in benghazi again for us tonight. stephanie, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. well, the opposition tells us that they are sending former military units that switched to the rebels' side down to the front line to lead the fight there against gadhafi's forces, but they have been stopped in their tracks. there was a new casualty in the fighting today, the oil facility at ras lanuf. two storage tanks and a pipeline were hit. right now it's unclear what caused the explosions, but both sides are blaming each other. gadhafi appeared on tv again today and he warned the west not to impose a no-fly zone. but there are indications that the defiant leader might actually be more open to dialogue than he appears. today he sent a number of emissaries from tripoli to reach out to international leaders, including a general that made a surprise visit to cairo and a number of officials to brussels to take part in conversations there with nato over the next couple of days. brian. >> nbc's stephanie gosk in benghazi, libya,

nbc's stephanie gosk has the latest from benghazi. >> reporter: we're watching two big battles today in libya. one very close to tripoli 30 miles to the west in the town of zaua. that has been held by opposition forces for days until friday, when gadhafi decided to strike back and to strike back forcefully. there were dozens that were killed on friday and today, again, pro-gadhafi forces have surrounded the town and they are firing inside. in the east, there is a battle over the oil terminal. opposition forces say they've actually taken control of that town from gadhafi forces and pushing gadhafi to the west. rebels say they eventually want to make their way to tripoli. >>> internet services in libya appear to be completely shut down. yesterday google confirmed that all internet traffic coming in and out of libya has stopped. the same thing happened during egypt's revolution where many protesters used social networking sites to spread the word. the government there shut down the internet for about a week. >>> the showdown in libya and the uncertainty across the middle east has gas pr
