"today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in san jose this morning. this chilling attack really gained national attention in guy was aggressive. >> reporter: it was, laura. you know, in large part this national attention from the viral video of those crystal clear images you saw on camera, accused attacker set to be here in court this afternoon. investigators say the 31-year-old mohammed khaliqi fled to his mother's house in san leandro after attacking the 13-year-old girl inside her san jose home a week ago after following her home from school. she fought him off and he ran. police say khaliqi also unsuccessfully tried to sexually assault a 28-year-old woman in a rest room at the nearby japanese market. that was in early april. sources by the way close to the investigation telling nbc bay area khaliqi has confessed to both attempted sexual assaults. police adding khaliqi lives close to both victims and changed at appearance after the footage started to spread. he was booked on multiple charges incued colludings a techbted sexual assault and burglary

. >> "today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in san francisco with more. good morning. >> reporter: laura and sam, a caltrain has confirmed the engineer, 32-year-old brandon bostian, did work as a contract employee back in 2010 and 2011. first as a conductor and then an engineer. technically worked for amtrak. now, bostian has yet to formally speak to investigators but he has hired a lawyer. cording to his linkedin profile he was an amtrak engineer for 4 1/2 years and conductor for 4 years before that. there are questions this morning on why bostian was going so fast. data from the critical black box suggested the train heading from washington to new york was traveling twice the posted speed limit when it went off the track. 106-mile-per-hour miles an hour. >> shortly after he entered the curve he placed the train into basically put the emergency brakes on the train. >> slams on the brakes. >> slam on the brakes. >> so it was too late? >> the train derailed at that point so i would say it was too late. >> reporter: so far bostian is refusing to talk to inv

bushrying two whales. >> stephanie chuang is live on pacifica beach. people are complaining about the smell out there. >> they are. thankfully where we are we can't smell it but half a mile down is where the two whales beached three wee another. the process to bury both is set to begin today. scientists wanted to let the sperm whale and the humpback whale pictured here decompose and that was the plan until the smell got too pungent for the people around here. the humpback beached may 5th three weeks after the sperm whale beached close by. they became a big attraction for people and for marine biologists and researchers who began studying what killed both. that involved cutting into these whales which made, of course, the stench stronger. people who live nearby and those visiting the beach have been complaining. the plan is to bury both whales. the beach is pacifica beach but it's under the jurisdiction of the san francisco recreation and parks department. it was just last week that rec and parks officials agreed to work together with the city of pacifi

nbc bay area stephanie chuang has the video. >> reporter: good morning. it's unclear why the man targeted this boutique store on the 200-block of west portal avenue. maybe because the signs are obscured from sight. maybe also because you can see from the front display the jewelry that is fully in sight. whatever the reason the man was caught on store camera two weeks ago. this was april 21st. san francisco police have just released the security camera footage. the man is wearing a black hat, jacket red shirt and jeans, walks by. he glances around peers inside the store. at that point you can see he is wearing gloves. he then walks out, looks around the street before he chucks a rock at the door that he takes out of his pocket. it doesn't break anything so he picks up the rock again, studies the block once again and throws it against the door. starts kicking in the door three times until it gives way. he ducks under along with his duffel bag. you can also see in the video that he is messing with hanging necklaces and jewelry in the back. 40 seconds into th

nbc bay area stephanie chuang live there now. steph, just a tragic scene. >> reporter: scott and kris, i have to tell you this is one of the most heart-wrenching scenes i've had to come to. the boy was still caught under the train when we got here. witnesses say he had a backpack on and was trying to catch the train. he was a student at this middle school. heading towards the train on lakeview. the car that was on the right-happened side of the lane was able to stop in time. the one on the left basically almost hit him. the boy made a pivot move and lapped in front of the train. hit by the crosswalk and moved 40 to 50 feet. a lot of emotions. we saw police leading away this distraught man. he had to sit down. it's unclear how this man is related to the boy. he was led away from the scene. one witness says he saw everything happen from the train hitting the boy to two people running into the street hysterical. >> going hysterical trying to pull him out from under it, trying to move the train. tried to tell her to stop because, you

"today in the bay's" stephanie chuang is there this morning to explain. good morning. >> reporter: yeah, laura and sam, the biggest lesson really is being prepared. this morning we are along the san andreas trail by the san andreas lake. a seismologist named the fault line after this lake ear in san bruno. a big scene in the film for tonight is this. a tsunami wave crushing into the golden gate bridge and destroying san francisco. experts say this is highly unbelievable scenario because the san andreas fault line is mostly on land so it cannot generate a tsunami and definitely not one hitting the city. unlike the movie which has a 9.0 quake, the san andreas fault is capable of at most magnitude 8.3. seismologists say the most important take away from the film other than being prepared is the reaction, drop, cover, and hold on which you do see cal tech scientists in the movie to. strap to the ground. take cover under a sturdy table and hold on to it until the shaking stops. what's also real is the damage the next big quake san andreas can cause. not quite

"today in the bay" stephanie chuang live in san francisco with what's behind the price hike. >> good morning, laura and sam. happy friday. usually on the higher side anyway but we're talking about a difference of 42 cents a gallon here in the city specifically. the average for a gallon of regular is 3:76 which is just about what you see at this station here. experts say the quick jump in prices is because of the problem of refineries in the county. the prices are up across the country. they say the swift increase is the most one here in california. gas production and refineries in the state are typically at capacity. there's a pretty big impact when there's a recession. >> i noticed the prices are going up quite rapidly. get gas. the following day and i notice the prices went up almost ten cents. and just today. >> ten cents in a day according to that man. now, here's the impact in the bay area. price per gallon of regular up 42 cents in san francisco and in oakland. up 49 cents in san jose. just some perspective, it's still much better than the record highs that we've seen back in o
