nbc's stephanie gosk now on the investigation. >> reporter: mafia king pen, prolific fbi snitch, and famed fugitive whitey bulger is dead, killed in a west virginia federal prison according to a law enforcement source. both the fbi and u.s. attorney in west virginia are investigating. bulger, serving two life sentences for involvement in 11 murders and a laundry list of criminal activity, had only just transferred to the prison on monday night. his death marks the end of a larger than life story. bulger grew up in gritty south boston, turning to crime at a young age. when you were a sergeant in boston, what was his reputation at the time? >> brutal, in terms of somebody should be feared. somebody who had his run-ins with the law. >> reporter: later, an i informant, sending rival mafia members to jail, as his own criminal enterprise grew. the federal government eventually charged him with crimes in 1995. tipped off about his imminent arrest, bulger fled and became a legend. >> there's a fascination in the united states with gangsters, whether it's the mafia or the south boston mob. >>
