i'm steve handlesman, nbc news, columbia, south carolina. >> so what now?raditionally republicans settle on their presidential nominee pretty early on in the process, so how does yesterday's outcome in south carolina fit into the mix? no one is more excited about than nbc bay area political analyst larry gerten because this really does make things interesting. what does it mean for the race now? >> sure, it's very exciting. who knows. a couple of things to consider. you look at the data in terms of what happened last night. newt gingrich winning, winning big, winning really big. it really seems to be at least for now the republicans are coalescing around newt gingrich but who knows. that could change. they have colesd around so many people already, but for the time being he is the anti-romney conservative. the question is can he go on from there? that's the question. we know that the contests have served a purpose these three, they have narrowed down the number of contestants from about 12 to four, and that's important but now the race takes on a different
