steve kornacki at the big board. y, steve. >> hey, brian. it's primary night. really it's primary week in kentucky and some of these places. let me take you through what we know right now. this is the democratic senate race in kentucky. the winner of this gets mitch mcconnell in the fall. what you see right now, a little less than 50,000 votes counted. amy mcgrath, a little bit ahead of charles booker. now, what's happening here is a little complicated. the votes that you see counted right now, those are votes that were cast today, people who went out and cast ballots today. some counties, the counties that you see in colored in here, some counties have released those numbers. other counties haven't. those are the counties that are gray right here. so we have some of the vote that was cast today in kentucky, and then there's another pile of votes, the mail-in votes. there are a lot of mail-in votes in kentucky. they haven't gotten to those. they haven't touched those. we may not get those results for another week. so

joining us now is msnbc national political correspondent steve kornacki. e, what can you tell us as of this hour? >> i can tell you a little, and you can see it right here on your screen. these are the results we have right now from kentucky. it is not a lot. amy mcgrath, though, in the votes that have been released so far, narrowly ahead of charles booker. you see, 44-40. when i say not a lot, 22,000, 20,000, a little less down here. south of 50,000 votes be been counted. so a long way to go. what you have here are some counties in this state, and some precincts in some counties in the state decided to release the vote that they received today that people went out and cast in person today. a lot more of the vote in kentucky, though, was cast by mail. days ago, weeks ago, or was thrown into the mail just today and can still count if it comes in, in the next couple of days. so we may get some more results from some of these counties overnight into tomorrow in terms of what was cast today. then we may wait a week for more to come in. just to let you know, lou

steve kornacki is at the big board.like, when people asked us why we don't have results two weeks after election day, we can't say we didn't warn you. >> this is coming from a lot of different angles. georgia yesterday, pennsylvania, actually, wisconsin a while back. all having primaries with heavy male-in voting. -- mail-in voting. look at this. between high 50s, nearly two-thirds of the votes cast by mail. compare that to what these states are used to. in the 2016 general election, this is the share of the vote in these states that came in by mail. this is a massive change. just the primary. you can imagine if the general election looks like the primary, they are dealing with a volume of mail-in votes that they've never, ever dealt with before. you look at all the states in purple and yellow. they are doing a lot of mail voting or all mail voting. some of these states, it is brand new. the other issue is this. one example here. this is from the wisconsin primary here. this is the general election in 2016. this is the

msnbc national political correspondent steve kornacki is at the big board for us.ts still coming in, but what do you have for us? >> interesting things. let's start in kentucky. this race the most high profile, amy mcgrath, of course, national democrats got excited about her when she got in this race, trying to get the democratic nomination to take on mitch mcconnell in kentucky. charles booker state representative a late entrant into the race seen as a big underdog, here's what we have got. you see about 10% roughly of all the votes we expect have been counted. what has been counted so far is some of the counties in kentucky have released the votes that people cast in person yesterday. so folks who went out to the polls, voted yesterday, some of the counties in kentucky have released those numbers. and of those numbers that's where mcgrath right now has a 4-point edge over booker. no votes from yesterday came out of louisville. jefferson county, a quarter of all the vote in this primary is going to come from jefferson county. that is charles booker's base. if ther

joining me for a look with how the numbers have slipped in the past few months is steve kornacki. steve, the question i get all the time is, oh, yeah, all this bad news but nothing ever seems to impact the president. and yet, you've got evidence that's not true. >> there's been some movement here. let's take a look at the numbers here. basically, go back four months. take a monthly check in the same day. today is june 19th. let's go back four months to february 19th. at that point, this is the real clear politics poll average, average of all the polls out there. by 4.8 points and of course this was just as covid was starting to come into this country. really, a few week before the lockdowns began. middle of february, joe biden looked like he might not win the democratic nomination. he was struggling in iowa, new hampshire, nevada. at that point, biden, in the head to heads. march 19th. there it was. now, remember, biden was transformed between february and march. suddenly, he started winning primaries. became the likely nominee. he built the lead of about 1.6 there of growth. then,

steve kornacki is here to break it down. he has his big board out. we have some new numbers, steve. what can you tell snus? >> it is a close race when you look at the numbers. amy mcgrath, charles booker. mcgrath with a lead of 7,000 votes. but this is going in one pretty clear direction right now. amy mcgrath's direction. i'll take you through what we're looking at here. remember, the actual primary, the in-person voting at least, was last week in kentucky. they had some votes that were cast in person last week, but they had a whole bunch that were cast by mail. sometimes week acsballots only n last week. county by county, they're releasing the final vote totals. we said the ball game would come down to these counties right here, where louisville is and lexington is. this is more than 1/3 of the vote in the entire state in these two counties. booker's home base is louisville, the biggest one. lexington, that's where the university of kentucky is. basically, let me show you what happened here. if you go inside lexington, booker won the county. he was expecting to win this bigger. we

let's go straight to msnbc national correspondent my dear friend steve kornacki. let's dig into the poll numbers out. the numbers we've seen is definitely going to catch president trump's attention. >> yes, we've seen some movement. start with this, the average of all national polls out there. what you see is a ten-point lead nationally on average for joe biden right now. that's been part of the movement. the question is when the national margin starts to get wide for one candidate, start looking at the individuals states. you're probably going to see movement there. that's what we are seeing. these are polls that could have come out in the last day or two and you see battleground, potential battleground states. look at arizona, states democrats are targeting aggressively, very optimistic. there's biden in this poll leading by seven points. but also a state like ohio, a blowout in 2016. donald trump won by 120 points. but maybe it is when biden's lead is 20. same thing with texas and 10-point lead nationally, suddenly joe biden's leading by 20. and 2016 trump trai

conversation is mike barnic barnicle, white house correspondent, yamiche alcindor and correspondent steve kornackisteve, it's great to see you again. i'll let you take the wheel on the polling here. what do you see in the state by state polls and also the national polls, some of the cross tabs in the last two weeks. >> this is an interesting sort of way of getting confirmation, we we'd had national poll numbers the last couple weeks that have looked bad for the president. you wonder, is it possible they're missing something, are these outliers p. when you get state polls that match the national polls that's confirmation we are in a situation you're describing. the way i look at it, we had moments in 2016 where donald trump hit ebbs, the gap that he faced against hillary clinton would get extra large and a week or two later it would rurp to baseline. there is a question whether trump is in an ebb right now. although this ebb is worse for him than any ebb in 2016 when i look like gaps in these states, polls that show him down, 11, 12, 13 points nationally. he would be behind hillary clinton in 2016

joining us is national political correspondent steve kornacki.senate was in play, but the number of seats coming in to play is what is increasing all of a sudden. >> yeah, that's the thing, chuck. basically start at this level here. this is just the national polling average. and it is biden right now on average is ten points ahead of donald trump nationally. you know, you have to go back the most lopsided presidential election in the last generation, 1996, clinton beat dole by eight. this is running by ten, at least for now. but when you start getting up into that range, it brings a lot of things into play. first, look at it at the presidential level. all these states, some we have known as swing states. pennsylvania, michigan, wisconsin, but what about georgia, what about ohio, texas? all states trump won in 2016. all states where this week polls have come out, good quality polls have come out, showing joe biden leading donald trump. the margins vary there, but again, every single one of the states was won by trump in '16. he's down ten points n

first nbc political reporter shaquille brewster and national correspondent steve kornacki join me toake down the latest on the race. shaq, what is going on? the state is cutting nearly 95% of polling locations. i would think given the coronavirus concerns you'd want to have more polling locations so people wouldn't be crowded together in lines in polling sites. >> well, stephanie, that cut came with a dramatic expansion of early in-person and mail-in voting. we are here in louisville, kentucky, at the expo center. if i were to tell you the largest county in the state, jefferson county, went from the 256 polling locations to just one, you would expect to see those large lines we've been seeing across the country. look behind me. you're not seeing that. there's been a constant flow of people. no lines here. people are wearing masks. you have election poll workers wearing face shields whenever there's a new voter. there's a round of applause for the new voters. you're hearing that regularly. as you come to the left you see the actual polling booths. voting booths. there's over 350 votin

in new york, i'm steve kornacki on a busy monday evening. nearly a dozen states now have rolled back their reopening plans amid surging coronavirus cases. and some of the president's advisers are warning him of the need for, quote, sweeping changes to his re-election campaign in order to avoid defeat in november. we will get to all of that. >>> but we start tonight with bipartisan calls for answers from the white house over a report parts of which nbc news has now confirmed that russian intelligence officers offered to pay bounties to taliban-affiliated fighters who kill americans in afghanistan. that is according to u.s. intelligence. one official told nbc that, quote, american service members died as a result of russian payments to the taliban. but other officials said the intelligence has not been corroborated. "the new york times," which broke the story late friday, also reported that, quote, the intelligence finding was briefed to president trump, and one official said that it was, quote, included in the presidents' daily brief. that's

i'm steve kornacki in new york. events in washington and arizona presented a discordant split screen today. at the same time that dr. anthony fauci and other health officials testified about the ongoing danger of the global pandemic president trump ven ventured to a coronavirus hot spot. at this hour the president is delivering remarks at a students for trump event in phoenix, arizona. it was organized by the conservative advocacy group turning point action, and being hosted at a mega church that accommodates up to 3,000 people. this comes amid a sharp spike in coronavirus cases in the state of arizona, which today announced a record high number of new infections. now, arizona has become a must-win state for the president this fall in his battle for re-election. a repeat fox news poll found joe biden leading there, though, by four percentage points. trump won arizona by just over three points in 2016. but in 2018 the state elected a democratic senator who benefitted from strong support in suburban phoenix, part of a

i'm steve kornacki in new york. tonight outrage and calls for police reform are continuing to grow in the streets of atlanta, this following another killing of a black man at the hands of police. on friday night, officers responded to a call that 27-year-old rayshard brooks was asleep in his car and blocking a wendy's drive-through. body camera video from the atlanta police department showed an initially calm interaction between the officers and brooks. but police say a struggle ensued after brooks failed a sobriety test. eyewitness video caught the apparent struggle, during which investigators say brooks grabbed a taser from one of the officers. surveillance video provided by the georgia bureau of investigation appears to show brooks turn and point the taser at the officer while running away. the officer responded by firing at brooks three times. an autopsy ruled his death a homicide caused by two gunshot wounds to the back. the officer who shot brooks has been fired. a second is on administrative duty and atlanta

. >> as i always say it's not easy to be steve kornacki on a night like tonight. also covering the primary in kentucky is daniel drozier, long lines today, daniel, what are the stories of importance to you, what's your lead on the voting in kentucky at this hour? >> well, so the lines in fayette county have been rather long, we only have one polling place at kroger field, where the university of kentucky's football team plays. those lines have been long because fayette county clerk believins had a limited number of check-in spots, or check-in booths that he would put in the venue. the wait is about an hour and a half to, you know, it's in that range, throughout the day it's been this kind of steady -- at one point it was close to two hours, they added new check-in locations. . you know part of that is just high turnout, 38% of the voters in fayette county requested absentee ballots. . so with a number of people coming in person, too, it looks like we're going to have a high turnout in fayette county. rather high for a primary election. >> let me ask you this, does

more on this, we're joined by msnbc national correspondent steve kornacki. is from coast to coast in the battleground, steve, that you start to see a bit of a pattern. >> yeah, definitely, chuck. and really it starts nationally. just look at it this way. this is the average of all the national polls right now. basically an eight-point advantage nationally for joe biden. that's about as big a lead as hillary clinton ever got in 2016. usually the 2016 race was closer. so biden basically ahead by eight nationally. when you see a number like that you see the battleground numbers. here's a fox news poll out in the last 24 hours. wisconsin, remember, trump flipped that. first republican since '84. in the fox poll it's a biden advantage of 9 points in wisconsin. arizona, another one of these fox polls, biden up by 4 in arizona. remember, trump won that by 3 points in 2016. you've got ohio here. this was a runaway for trump in 2016. used to be a big battleground state. maybe it is again. joe biden ahead by two here in this ohio poll. and then you mentioned the texas
