steve schmidt, you watched so many campaigns and worked in campaigns. what makes rand paul different in this primary race? >> he's talking about issues that none of the other republican candidates thus far are talking about and he has in con gru ent positions that largely all of the other candidates agree on. it should be noted that lindsey graham who will likely run and most quit witted and humorous person went out of the way to make a statement on the iran deal that any other candidates and hillary clinton with the exception of rands paul could have gotten a better deal than the obama administration did. you look at these republican candidates particularly some of the ones that we don't consider front-runners, carly fiorina, lindsey graham i think they are going to beat rand paul like a drum trying to get attention -- national security issues are important in a republican primary. you look at the african-american faces in the audience today, rand paul has been outspoken on criminal justice reform mass incarceration reform. he has been to berkeley wher

post," helene cooper of the "new york times" and former senior advisor to john mccain's campaign steve schmidt. welcome to sunday, it's "meet the press." >>> good morning. lots of 2016 politics on the show. first breaking news overnight. a major rescue operation that is under way. hundreds feared drown south of an italian island of lampedusa, after a boat carrying as many as 700 migrants cam sized in the mediterranean sea between north africa and italy. kir simmons joins me from london. it is a fear most of these 700 already drowned. >> reporter: there is. good morning. that search and rescue operation is under way involving italian boats, the multis, navy and commercial vessels. the italian coast guard said 24 bodies have been recovered and 28 survived. one international organization is saying 49 are rescued and taken to sicily. the sinking boat capsized around midnight local time, which is more than 12 hours ago. the final numbers may be truly gut-wrenching. hundreds still need rescuing, but the hopes of finding more alive after hours on the very cold sea appear to be dimming. survivors say
