throughout the cold war, the strategic air command kept them on 24-hour alert status in the northern pacific. known as the rock. they were to launch at a moment's notice, to keep a watchful eye on soviet ballistic missile test on the peninsula. the 24 crewmembers on board the rc-135 were en route from the air force base in alaska where they had been awaiting for the weather to clear. blizzard conditions and extreme cross-winds were ravaging the small exposed island. the weather was not uncommon. just another day at the office for the 55th wing aircrew. however, after receiving clearance to land, weather conditions deteriorated rapidly. firsthand accounts from crewmembers talked about the buffering, like being on the end of a yo-yo. they sheared off the landing gear. as the damage of the aircraft slammed into the runway, engines three and four exploded and the fuselage exploded in half. the disintegrating aircraft slid, eventually careening off the hill. crewmembers worked to free themselves and their teammates from the burning wreckage while the blizzard raged. 18 crewmembers escaped
