feels as strong as styrofoam. is it as cheap to make as styrofoam? >> yeah.our materials today are inherently cost competitive. that is because the products literally self-assemble. they grow. all of the raw materials, rather than using fossil fuels like you mentioned earlier, are entirely farm waste, which we source from just 50 miles from our manufacturing facilities. so that makes our products inherently cost competitive. david: inherently cost competitive. does that mean it is as cheap to make as styrofoam? >> it certainly is. all the products we sell today are at cost pairty or even cheaper than plastic foams. david: so why don't people just make the switch? sounds like it is a no-brainer? >> well, today we are still a small startup company. we are manufacturing products for fortune 500 companies such as crate & barrel but we recently partnered with the sealed air corporation, the company that makes products such as bubble wrap and even instant pack foams. tath we're taking this technology and distributing it across the country opening up new manufacturi

city leaders want to ban styrofoam takeout containers, the proposal going up for a vote next week. community groups are lending their support to this idea. arturo santiago joins us live. you just heard city council members and environmentalist groups speaking out on banning styrofoam takeout on restaurants. what are they saying? >> caller: this proposed ordinance that would ban styrofoam food packages took nearly two years. they feel they can finally get it done. environmental groups along with a san jose councilman gathered at the park to pry open a manhole cover in order to access a storm water capture device. this cylinder was installed last summer and has not been yet cleaned out. it filters out garbage from 68 acres of storm water runoff. the idea is to show the advanced amount of polystyrene that can pollute our storm water system. save our shore, california clean water action and save the bay are all speaking out in favor of thf proposed ordinance. they all agree that tough poll sis and regulations are needed to reduce the amount of styrofoam trash that's in the bay area cre

> heather: but alternative to styrofoam, they cost two to three times more than using styrofoam. >> i how the government says don't worry, we'll make things kheevp for you. how is the tax base looking right now in new york city? how are small businesses doing right now? it's easy to say, don't worry you'll get a rebate. if that were true and going to save you money as alan is trying to imply and government is going to save the environment and save the world with a tax break, then why are all the people out there on the street corners livid over this new idea? >> i live in new york city. i passed a vendors and they didn't seem that livid. there is more to it than saving money. the point is, the government can save money on landfill. it's terrible for the environment and public policy has to take into consideration what is best for the long term well-being for the earth. >> i don't think this is really about mayor bloomberg saving the environment. if he was, he would stop flying in his private jet. i think this is mayor bloomberg sitting they're not realizing, there is a list of hundred

because basically styrofoam is cheap. if restaurants have to find an alternative they will to have to pay more and will raise prices to offset the extra costs. the city council will vote today whether or not to ban styrofoam food containers. if they do, san jose would be the largest city in the country to do so. styrofoam is harmful to the environment, not biodegreatable and contributes to up to 15% of the city's litter and can cause harm to animals. but it's inexpensive at many restaurants often used for to- go boxes or hot coffee cups. restaurants would be forced to use alternative packaging. the san jose silicon valley chamber of conference and california restaurant association argue that the ban would hurt businesses here and instead they want to find a way to recycle the foam. 70 california cities already ban styrofoam cups and food containers and san jose got rid of plastic bags last year. if the city council votes to move forward, this would be a phasing out process so we actually wouldn't see any changes until jan
