suffolk police have yet to say if that was the case. what they have said is the woman they stopped this morning definitely put an officer's life in jeopardy. it was 2:40 this morning on the northern state parkway in dix hills and two drivers were killed when their vehicles collided. one of them completely innocent, the other a female suspect trying to avoid police and driving westbound in the eastbound lanes. at a brief news conference in which suffolk police took no questions, they took reporters it started with a traffic stop in central islip. a female driver under suspicion for dwi and having a stolen vehicle. >> the suspect refused to comply. she got in to the driver's seat of that vehicle and fled from >> reporter: police policy in suffolk county clearly states, quote, officers shall not pursue suspects the wrong way on interstates or other controlled access highways or divided roadways unless specifically authorized by the field supervisor. police haven't said if a supervisor new about this chase, they did imply the actions of the

. >> reporter: suffolk police say they were pursuing a female suspect who tried to run down an officer as she drove the wrong way on the northern state parkway. she slammed head on into an innocent driver killing him instantly. seconds later her suv left the road and exploded into flames. she was burned beyond recognition. detectives say the suspect had initially been pulled over here in the central islip area on suspicion of drunk driving and operating a stolen vehicle. >> the suspect refused to comply. she got into her -- she got into the driver's seat of that vehicle and fled from the scene. when fleeing from the scene, she almost struck the police officer at the scene. the police officer then engaged in a police pursuit with that suspect. >> reporter: fleeing central islip she eventually drove the wrong way on the northern state parkway and crashed nine miles west in dix hills. the parkway was closed for hours during the morning rush. >> driving the wrong way on the parkway makes me nervous. >> the police have a difficult job. and they are trying to protect us. >> reporter: suffolk

eyewitness news reporter kristin thorne is live now on the scene in suffolk county. kristin. >> reporter: lori this accident happened on the eastbound side of the parkway. what you're seeing behind me here, this is the westbound side, the side we're on. you can see that the entrance here from deer park avenue to northern state parkway is shut down. we want to show you the video we have of this burned out suv. again, now that is resting just east of exit 42 on the northern state parkway. we are hearing initially that police tried to pull over this driver. the driver proceeded to flee the scene eventually crashing. we are hearing that that car may have burst into flames. we know at least one person has died. this all happened around 2:30 in the morning, so what was the initial reason why they were trying to pull over this driver? we just don't know that yet. we're still waiting for a lot of details to come in. what we can tell you is if you're heading out this morning, you usually take the northern state parkway, it is now closed both directions eastbound and westbound
