. >> reporter: alex sullivan was also 27. he was celebrating his birthday. sunday would have also been his first anniversary with his wife casey. everyone says he was full of joy and was loved dearly by his friends and family. 23-year-old micayla medek was known as cayla by her friends. she attended aurora community college and planned to graduate in 2015. she described herself as an independent girl just trying to get her life together while having fun. just a year older, alex teves was 24. he wanted to be a psychiatrist and recently had earned a master's degree in counseling. he's survived by two younger brothers. 32-year-old texas native rebecca wingo has two young girls. she joined the air force after high school. fluent in chinese, she served as a translator before moving to colorado. >> the sweetest smile you ever seen. she got prettier as she grew older. in the blink of an eye, something happens and completely changes everyone's life forever. >> reporter: in the blink of an eye, everyone's life can change forever. little veronica moser-sullivan's life

the youngest victim, veronica moser-sullivan, was just 6 years old. a vibrant little girl, her whole life ahead of her, swrus learned how to swim. that horrible night at the movie theater, the night veronica was killed and her mother was critically injured, a 13-year-old girl named kaelin, veronica's baby-sitter, desperately tried to save the little girl. kayla is just 13 years old. she showed tremendous courage even though she herself thought she was going to die. poppy harlow spoke to her. >> we just put kaelin into your hands, lord, your loving, merciful -- >> reporter: prayers for 13-year-old kaelin, a survivor. >> he just kept firing, and then he would stop like he was reloading. and he kept firing at anyone he saw. i thought i was going to die. >> reporter: you thought you were going to die? >> i've never had that feeling before in my life and it's the scariest feeling. to think that you're going to die. >> reporter: kaylan watched as three people with her at the batman screening were shot, including the 6-year-old girl she regularly baby-sat, v

sullivan family released a statement saying the sullivan family lost a cherished member of their familyoday. alex was smart, funny and above all loved dealer by his friends and family. they said today, friday, was his 27th birthday. and micayla medek, 23, is described as being funny, outgoing and very spiritual, very tied to god. her family took 19 hours to find out whether is she was dead or alive. they learned of her fate late friday night. cnn confirmed that early this morning. and jessica ghawi, the face of this shooting here, her brother jordan has been very active on social media. she was an aspiring sportscaster, somebody who no doubt would have had a tremendous impact on the field. she was shot in the leg, according to a witness and then shot in the head. the fatal shot took her life. she moved from denver to texas to pursue her dream of becoming a sportscaster. she was also a survivor of the recent mall shooting, gary, if you remember in toronto. it's incredible. her mom spoke to a local affiliate ksat. >> i'll never have her to hug again or get a text message again or get a fu

among them, ian sullivan, the father of six-year-old veronica moser sullivan, the youngest victim. >> in a case like this, the investigation doesn't stop. it will continue up through trial and so as we find more information we want to make sure we've got the right charges. >> reporter: colorado is a state with the death penalty and district attorney carol chambers told reporters outside the court that it is being considered in this case but she will first discuss that with the victims. if you talk to the victims and the mood is not to go for the death penalty, are you bound in some way to follow their wishs? >> it will ultimately be the decision of the prosecutors on the case. >> reporter: this is the beginning of what's going to be a long process. another hearing next week and the expectation is a trial would not begin until sometime next year. scott? >> pelley: barry, thanks. holmes' parents issued a statement through their lawyer today. they said their hearts go out to the victims and their families. the more we see and hear of holmes, the more questions are raised and senior corre
