i want to show you what the chp is doing here in sunnyvale. what they are doing is actually turning the cars around in the opposite direction. this is the homestead exit. they shouldn't be going this way because this is the wrong direction. they are sending them back up cloever leaf to get -- cloverleaf to get them on the freeway. this is the power line that's down. this is a view from our chopper, where you can see this traffic nightmare here in the middle of the morning commute. northbound 85 is completely shut down. so is southbound 85 as i just showed you this traffic diversion. this is all due to a fire that occurred in the area. we hear that a power pole caught fire. i'm not sure if you can see that from your shot. my cameraman here on the ground, we can actually see it from where we're standing. you can see the bottom of that power pole is completely blackened. we did see some firefighters there on the overpass, not sure where they went. if you look underneath the overpass. you can see the wire that's hanging across the lanes of traffic

we want to talk about terrible accident in sunnyvale.e will show you our drive over the altamont pass an improvement from a little while ago. an early crash went down an embankment and now we are at 37 miles per hour. southbound

kind of a mild pattern. 50s and 60s. 62 gilroy. 62 san jose state. 63 sunnyvale. but the low cloud deck continues to be us. it's there. it's not going anywhere. we call it fog, sun, breezy. inland on the temps. but near average coast and bay. >>> at the toll plaza there is still a 20 minute delay. but there is a little bit more of a delay. so again a 20 minute drive time into san francisco. not too steep on the bay bridge that the actual traffic looks good on the span. let's move along and take a look at interstate 880. you can see traffic is looking good in both directions from downtown to hegenberger the airport exit is a five minute drive. san jose we can see that the freeways are looking pretty good. there is one closure nobody 101 at the lawrence expressway and that one is still there but the traffic is not effected on the freeway. but we begin our 6:00 hour with that developing news. we are learning more about that deadly highway tragedy in sunnyvale earlier this morning. chp says it involved five people who appeared to have been celebrating a birthday. jani

the chp is on the scene of a deadly overnight crash on highway 101 in sunnyvale. a semitruck and motorcycle collided after 2:30 this morning. the motorcyclist was killed. here's a look at the map, the area we're talking about. northbound 101 near lawrence expressway. right now, two lanes are closed. let's go to mike inouye. this is sure to be impacting the drive. >> yeah, the traffic very light right now, by when you lose half of the freeway, you have some slowing, we'll show you on the maps. we're looking at another crash northbound 101 at bailey. i'm sorry, northbound 101, be -- bueno. you have your two left lanes blocked. now this has been going on for hours, we don't have a time when chp thinks the lanes will be open. i have put in another request for information seeing if they need daylight. if they need daylight, to get more information for the crash or investigation, this could be hours. if not, just a short period of time. look at the slower drive developing with the light volume. look at san jose, this is the volume of traffic at 680. because of the light

this is a a small section really of 101, stretching across parts of santa clara and sunnyvale. those crashes happened between lawrence expressway and great america parkway. nbc bay areas a monte francis spoke to the chp tonight about what is causing these problems. monte? >> reporter: in all three crashes, excessive speed was a factor. in two of them, alcohol was involved. that's why all three happened here on this section of 101. the highway patrol says at this point it appears to be a coincidence. the most recent crash happened last night on northbound 101 just north of great america parkway. a speeding bmw flipped five times, killing a passenger and seriously injuring the driver, 42-year-old steven hunt of sunnyvale. the chp arrested hunt at the hospital on suspicion of driving under the influence. just 24 hours before that, a motorcyclist was killed at the same spot on 101 trying to pass a big rig. and last friday, a 30-year-old sunnyvale woman was killed in a crash of the lawrence expressway offramp when the car she was riding in ran off the road and flipped over. the driv

janine de la vega is live in sunnyvale right now.t interviewed a customer who came to the rescue of one of the victims. >> reporter: yeah, they were completely taken by surprise. the pizza deliver yayman just finished delivering a pizza to the home down the street when he got robbed. he ran back to the customer's home asking for help. earlier monday night at 9:00 p.m., police say a pizza deliveryman was approached by two suspects after he dropped off a pizza on remington avenue. police consider this a kidnapping because they got into the victim's vehicle and forced him to drive to another vehicle. the thieves stole cash and a phone. but the deliveryman was uninjured. an hour later, a different employee from the same domino's made a delivery on north bayview, the one i was talking about, when a suspect tried to force him out of his car. officers say the victim ran away to the customer's home. he knocked on the door in shock. >> he came back and there was like a knock and it took us a few seconds to get up and so when we came to the do
