susan candiotti has reaction from campus now. susan? >> reporter: in the shadow of joe paterno's statue, students sang their alma mater mourning the loss of a coach who meant so much to them. after 61 years of coaching, joe paterno won fans far and wide, young and old. >> joe was penn state. he made penn state. it's really a very sad, sad day for all of us. >> reporter: in the end, the winningest coach lost his life to lung cancer. he was 85. he died as he lived, his family said in a statement. he fought hard until the end. the end came two months after he was fired as head coach in the wake of the sex abuse scandal. joe paterno was not criminally charged in the child rape case involving his former assistant jerry sandusky. but he acknowledged he could have done more to bring the allegations to light. in what turned out to be his final interview published by "the washington post" just over a week ago, he try ied to expla his thinking. >> i had never had to deal with something like that. and i didn't feel adequate. i've had a wonderful e

susan candiotti is there as well. what are people telling you?very sad, of course, about the passing of joe paterno. someone they called joe pa because he's like a father figure here on campus. the heart and soul many people have said over the years of penn state. fredricka, there's been a long line of cars through campus, coming from the area, through town, as people want to use this as a gathering place to pay their respects. some people coming by foot. there's an elderly man in a wheelchair who just arrived. someone pushing him here so he could place a bouquet of flowers at the statute of joe paterno. of course, everyone also has in mind the wonderful legacy that they enjoy of him and honor him over the years. but there is also that tinge of scandal, the penn state scandal, that unfortunately has also become part of his legacy. but people here are willing to talk about it and want to discuss that. when they talk about honoring joe paterno. i spoke with a couple. >> he's more than a coach. his family is more than a family. they're, aside from a

susan candiotti on the penn state campus where students have been gathering all day at the paterno statue. and, susan, what are people telling you now in. >> reporter: hi, don. you know, both students and nonstudents and despite bitterly cold temperatures, there has been a steady stream of people stopping here at this site to exchange stories, share memories, and leave behind mementos of coach joe paterno. in fact, a lot of people stop by even to touch the hand of the statue. that's something that's traditionally done here, but today it takes on special meaning. all of this as you indicated amid a scandal, a child sex abuse scandal, that's touched penn state university that involved paterno's assistant cove, jerry sandusky. he is criminally charged, but all of this prompted the firing of joe paterno as head coach of the football team here, and this has left many fans still bitter. >> he was more than a coach. his family is more than a family. aside from all that's happened, this is different. all the people that have come to pay respects to him, and it's joe -- joe was penn state. he made

joining me now live is cnn's susan candiotti.se is the family saying right now about joe paterno's condition? >> reporter: good morning, gary. well, they're saying that he is continuing to fight this battle against complications while he is being treated for cancer, and in fact, one of his sons, jay paterno, also tweeted that he had grichb drifb by this iconic statue of joe paterno that stands here on campus and said that when he saw all the people that were here last night, he told his father about all the support he was getting, and that, as you indicated, it was inspiring him. of course, joe paterno has been hospitalized swoois twice in the hospital sense november, being treated for complications from lung cancer. what they said at the time was a treatable form of it, and also being treated for a brecken pelvis. now this news from a family spokesperson that doctors have placed him in very serious condition and the family is gathering here at the hospital to be with him. overnight dozens and dozens of people here at this statue

sue sean susan candiotti is here with more. ohio just had an earthquake recently, is that correct? >> they did. the last time they had one was on christmas eve, as a matter of fact. they sound like science fiction to some, but the scientists say this could signal a very serious problem. today's 4.0 earthquake near youngstown, ohio, comes one day after the state shut down operations at a fluid injection well. it treats waste water created by fracking, a way to extract natural gas and oil. here's the scary part for people who live there. over the last eight months there have been ten quakes within two miles of the well. today's makes 11. all in an area where earthquakes have been rare. residents tell us they found the ground rumbling and houses shaking. protesters have been complaining about the well activities for some time. scientists explain it this way, waste water from the fracing procedure is shot more than a mile under the ground as part of the procedure. the theory is the waste could be lubery crated existing faults prompting the minor earthquakes. the company says it is goin

joining me now is our national correspondent susan candiotti.s the reaction of the news of his condition on the penn state campus? >> reporter: good morning, gary. you can imagine, people here love joe paterno. he's known as joe pa, a fatherly figure here. known as the heart and soul of penn state. and that is why dozens and dozens of people were here throughout the night setting up more or less a candle light vigil around the iconic statue of joe paterno. you can see it. he has his hand outstretched with a number one sign. it's a tradition for people to come by and take hold of this hand as a show of support for him. they were doing that again last night. also leaving behind flowers and candles, pulling for him to come through. these conditions that are described as serious by the family. certainly the family is buoyed by the support and things like this that people here are say i ing. you know, when you think joe paterno, what comes to mind. >> just greatness and honor. >> people think of him more than just a coach. they think of him as a lead

cnn's susan candiotti is standing by. as this news has broken this morning, tell us about the scene at the school where he was, you know, frankly a beloved figure? >> reporter: it's hit hard here, howard. it's a very difficult day for the men -- for whoever who believed and loved the man that they've known as joe pa. you can see over ni mi shoulder that iconic statue of joe paterno here, posed with his number one finger up in the air saying we're number one. this man, the winningest coach in football. they said you don't understand what joe pa, joe paterno, means to penn state nlsz you are actually part of this community. he made penn state. he is penn state. there are candles set up here last night in a vigil. dozens of students and non-students here coming by. they said to pay their respects as soon as they got word that his condition was downgraded following complications of his treatment for lung cancer. the family put out a statement saying that he fought hard until the end and how much they loved him, how much he me
