susan candiotti has been covering this case for us. she joins us now live from new york. susan, why is pedro hernandez in the hospital? >> reporter: hi, randi. he was transferred to the hospital from a jail cell after the police said he was on medications. they didn't want to say what kind. they didn't want to administer them in the jail. once at the hospital, according to sources, he said that he wanted to die, so they put him on a suicide watch. so that set the stage for the arraignment that happened on friday afternoon. we were all watching very closely as we watched the arraignment take place from the hospital. we were watching near bion a closed circuit television where the judge was. we listened to the prosecutor put into the record what we had been hearing as rumors throughout the next several days. the defense attorney says his client has had a long history of mental illness, schizophrenic disease, bipolar disorder as well as schizophrenia. here's his attorney. and so the defense attorney asked for a full psychiatric evaluation and the judge agreed to it, randi. >>

cnn's susan candiotti on the story. what do we know, susan? >> hi, kyra. we found out from the law enforcement sources that this man is located in camden, new jersey, and wednesday brought in for questioning. why? well, because the authorities are saying that he is now making a claim that he played a direct role in the death of etan patz and allegedly killed the man. they were led to this man, we are told by sources, by law enforcement source, because this is someone who had beeen on ther radar screen and questioning people and as a source who led them to the basement of a man and this is also someone who had been on the radar a long time ago and they started to question him again, because the name kept coming up. we don't know whether this is going to lead to a break in the case, because some law enforcement sources are telling us that they are proceeding with a great deal of skepticism and caution. however, they are calling this naturally a very good lead at this time. so, we are waiting to see whether this is the break in the case that what everyone was

susan candiotti has been following this story and joins us. susan, what other details are the police giving about this it guy, pedro hernandez and how this alleged murder took place. >> reporter: this case continues to be a real stunner. as you indicated, he worked as a store clerk in the bodega and he learned the little boy, he says, with a promise of offering him a soda. he brought him to the basement and strangled him and put him in a trash bag is and put the trash a block away from the store. then in the ensuing years, i have a law enforcement source he was telling me he was briefly interviewed by the fbi. yet police are now saying he was not interviewed at all at that time. however, the question is what is happening now because we just got a statement from the fbi and this is very interesting. despite the fact police say he is going to be charged by the district attorney's office tomorrow, the fbi is saying this case isn't over. they say, the investigation into the disappearance remains active and ongoing. we remain determined to solve thi

susan candiotti is working the sources. what can you tell us? >> hi, carol.f all, authorities are saying we should exercise caution, but still, this is a man who was brought in for questioning wednesday from camden, new jersey. brought him in for questioning as this man is making a claim that he had played a direct role in the death presumed death of etan patz more than 33 years ago. this is someone who sources described to me as a man who lived and worked in the area where etan patz did in the soho area and lived with his family. he disappeared more than 30 years ago, and just about a block from where he lived. you'll remember that it was just about two months ago when police, there was a lot of activity in that area when they brought in cadaver dogs to search a basement a block from where etan lived. that didn't turn up anything and they looked for a possible bloodstain found in the basement, but again, that went nowhere either. but now because the manhattan district attorney re-opened this case, they are going over old leads and reinterviewed this man on t

our susan candiotti today visited the church where suspect pedro hernandez and his family are members. you spoke with the pastor, susan. what did he tell you? >> reporter: well, first of all, he said the first thing he talked about with his congregation at his services today, and we heard this, he asked all of them to pray for the pedro hernandez family, both him, his wife and his teenage daughter. and he also told us while visiting with us that he felt that, well, first of all that, he got a phone call -- rather, a personal visit from hernandez's wife and teenage daughter on thursday. this was the day after police had picked him up and taken in for questioning. and he said they came in crying and weeping. they were very emotional. he said he had the impression that they were completely blindsided by the fact that pedro had been picked up and taken in by police for questioning. he said that he did not think that his wife had any idea that her husband had allegedly confessed to police, said that he didn't have the impression that she had a clue about what had happened allegedly so many

susan candiotti is following the story for us. first of all, susan, tell us where hernandez is today. >> reporter: not in a jail cell. today authorities moved him from jail to bellevue hospital, which is a very well-known public hospital in new york city that also has a psychiatric unit. however, it also has a secure area where prisoners can be held. in this case suspect pedro hernandez is being held there according to police because he's taking medications, and authorities say they prefer to administer anyone who is on medications in a hospital setting. a spokesperson for the police department tells me that he won't comment on what kind of drugs he's taking, whether they are psychiatric drugs or any other kind of medications for that matter because he says he's citing privacy issues. but we do expect the court hearing to still happen at some point today. >> do we know how long he's going to stay in the hospital? do we think he might be moved to perhaps a prison or a jail cell? >> reporter: we just don't know. maybe we will find ou

susan candiotti is following the latest developments. hernandez is expected in court. what may happen today, susan? >> reporter: hi, carol. we expect that when and if he appears in court today we'll hear for the first time how the manhattan district attorney's office intends to charge him. the police said they expect that he will face second-degree murder charges but it is prosecutors who will make that final decision so we'll learn that. we'll also find out whether he is represented by his own attorney or whether one will be appointed for him. we'll also get to see him for the first time and see what his demeanor is as these charges are read in court. >> what do we know about this man, susan? >> reporter: well, we know this much. we know that he was a stock boy and only 19 years old at the time that this happened. we know that after etan disappeared, he no longer worked at this convenience store and moved to new jersey and worked as a construction worker but then got hurt and was living on disability. we know that he's married. has a teenage daughter and his neighbors

susan candiotti is outside the manhattan district attorney's office. >> reporter: hi, suzanne. we don't know too much about this man other than he was picked up on wednesday in new jersey being questioned at this time by investigators looking at the etan patz case. this is a man who we are told was on the radar of police decades ago but is now according to sources coming to their attention again because of the recent search a few months back when authorities went in to search the basement and an area about a block away from where etan patz lived. that search turned up nothing but they questioned a number of people at that time and this man's name kept coming up again and again. so authorities went back to talk with him one more time, and this man, according to sources, claims that he killed etan patz. authorities, of course, are now trying to sort this all out, suzanne. >> do they think this is credit snibl creditable? do they believe him? >> reporter: i'm sorry. we have a bad connection. i'm unable to hear what they're saying. this is a case, of cours
