jamal sutherland died at a detention center in north charleston on january 5th this year.d last week shows deputies pepper spraying and tasing him. what more do we know about the circumstances leading up to his death? >> jim this is very disturbing video to watch. we talked to the family attorney, sutherland's attorney, who told us that he suffered from bipolar schizophrenia. the family on new year's eve booked him into a mental health facility. a few days later, the police were called there and took him into custody for allegedly assaulting a staff member. the following mork, two deputies tried to get him out of his jail cell to a bond hearing. and that's when things went wrong. in the video we can see that two deputies, they were pepper spraying into his jail cell to try to get him out. at one point they enter and begin to tase him. in the body camera footage, can you hear a deputy toward the end saying that he was tased six times between two deputies tasers. it's very difficult to see him being lifted motionless into a wheelchair with ems trying unsuccessfully for 35 mi

the list goes on and on: sandy hook, las vegas, el paso, dayton, sutherland springs, aurora, orlando, parkland and, most recently, boulder. hundreds of lives ended by individual shooters with assault weapons, with family and friends left to grieve and pick up the pieces. victims of mass shootings and everyday gun violence alike have tried and failed to hold gunmakers and distributors accountable in court. but the protection of lawful commerce in arms act, which was the top legislative priority of the corporate gun industry, has allowed the gun industry to evade fundamental civil justice and accountability at the expense of victims of gun violence. we must repeal plcaa's sweeping immunity from civil liability for the gun industry, which must be held to account for negligent conduct, defective products, and otherwise irresponsible behavior. as we consider these and other issues related to our crisis of gun violence, i thank the witnesses for coming today and again i express my gratitude to chairwoman sheila jackson lee for convening this hearing. before i yield back, i asked man's conse
