the operator of the suv is 30-year-old luther harling.arlier in the day he nearly struck a police officer with his car in neighboring norristown. authorities gave chase, but called off the pursuit after harling crossed into the next town. but a half hour later, harling comes barreling through the road block set up around the accident scene. firefighter krause is conscious, but badly injured. >> a lot of concern, a lot of panic, is this guy going to make it? is he all right? >> krause is unable to see since the impact from the hip breaks the capillaries in his eyes, temporarily blinding him. soon he's on a gurney and headed to a chopper. krause suffers multiple broken bones including fractured vertebrae. he came within centimeters of a spinal injury that would have left him paralyzed. harling serves 4 1/2 years and is released in 2003. three years later, he died in a car accident. his attorney says harling's erratic behavior is caused by a mix of percocet and cocaine. after months of rehab, william krause returns to firefighting and james

the suv flipped over the guardrail and plunged to the ground. sherrie johnson joins with us more details on what's happening today with the investigation. >> reporter: investigators -- investigators will be back on the scene. the medical examiner is expected to release the cause of death. the accident happened on sunday. two sisters age 45 and 39, three girls ages 10, 7 and 3 and their grandparents were visiting from the dominican republic. police say the 45-year-old woman maria gonzales was driving south on the bronx river parkway when she lost control of the honda pilot. the suv flipped over a 4-foot high iron fence and dropped 60 feet landing upside down in a remote area of the zoo away from the exhibits and closed to visitors. all 7 were pronounced dead and they were wearing their seat belts. even the most experienced emergency crews who raced to the scene were shaken by what they found inside the mangled suv. >> sometimes you come upon events that are horrific and this is one of them. >> everybody was taken back by it. everybody has a relat

this suv was crushed. it landed upside down. and all the people inside were pronounced dead at the scene. because it landed in such a heavily brush area, they had to bring in a heat-sensing camera to see whether any of the victims had possibly flown out of the vehicle. as i said, a horrific scene, a terrible one. and of course, the investigation is ongoing. alison? >> one question for you, susan, you said they were driving at a high rate of speed. was it erratic? did drivers who saw this happen, did they see the suv driving in an erratic fashion? >> reporter: well, this is what's interesting. they've talked to at least one eyewitness, i am told, who said that it wasn't apparent to them what caused the suv to suddenly cross over, hit a barrier and go flying over the bridge. so if something had happened, if they were distracted by something, whether it was a medical issue, it's far too soon for authorities to say what caused the vehicle to go flying over the overpass. >> okay. susan candiotti in new york with the latest, thank you
