>> reporter: well, quite a bit, suzanne. i think the first thing is that a jury has been seated now in that trial. they've actually had opening arguments. it's nine men, seven women, and they did hear opening statements here in court today. the attorneys for the prosecution really sort of summing up this case that has involved both tawdry elements, suzanne, as well as those elements about campaign finance laws, and, of course, john edwards is accused of breaking several campaign finance laws in this case going all the way back to 2008 when he was running for president of the united states, got involved in an extramarital affair with a woman named rielle hunter. we're also told, i think the other important thing to tell you right now, suzanne, is andrew young, this is a north carolina advance man for john edwards back in the day, also a guy who really had a ringside seat on all these activities, wrote a book about it. he's a star witness for the prosecution. he's expected to take the stand right after lunch around 2:30 or so

i'm suzanne malveaux.ril 19th. the man charged with second-degree murder in trayvon martin's death will fight for bail tomorrow. george zimmerman will see a new judge at the bond hearing. the original judge has stepped aside because after possible conflict of interest. and as george zimmerman gets closer to trial, florida's stand your ground law also may be on trial. zimmerman's arrest was delayed after he claimed self-defense under that law. florida governor rick scott has tapped his lieutenant governor to lead a task force that's going to examine the state's gun law. >>> three, two, one. now, one, two, three. >> this is india, and that is a long-range intercontinental ballistic missile capable of carrying a nuke. it is just a test launch. a big success according to indian officials, but they say the blast off and flight went exactly as planned. the missile reportedly has 3,000 mile range. right now only five countries have these. so what does it mean for us here in the united states? we're going to talk

on the west coast, i'm suzanne malveaux.to get you up to speed for this thursday, april 5th. >>> deadline is just an hour away at the very partisan battle over your health care. republican appointed judge has given the justice department until noon central time to submit a three-page letter explaining whether the obama administration truly understands that federal courts have the right to overturn federal laws. a texas judge apparently took exception to president obama's statement on monday that if the supreme court overturned his signature health care law, it would be unprecedented. we'll have a live report in just a few minutes. >>> it's called the jobs act. in just a few hours president obama is going to sign it into law. it's a move aimed at boosting new businesses and the economy as a whole. the bill, which passed by congress with bipartisan support, targets companies with sales under $1 billion, relaxes the rules for small companies that go public, also makes it easier for startups to raise money. >>> mitt romney flexi

and i'm not just talking, suzanne, about partisan critics. among those who have criticized elements of this bill is the head of the s.e.c., and she was critical of pieces of this legislation that still exist in the bill that the president will sign today. >> all right. jessica, thank you. i want to bring in alison. what does this bill do specifically for the business community? >> reporter: suzanne, it gets more money in the hands of these small and medium-sized businesses, and if they have more money, they're going to be able to grow. they're going to be able to expand and hire, and so how are they going to get this money? they're going to get this money by going public, go out on the open market and sell shares. what this jobs act would do is relack the rules making it easier for them to go public. before a company can go public it has to go through a lot. it has to have an independent company look at its books. it has to disclose certain financial information to investors so they know what they're buying in. as of now companies because thi

i'm suzanne malveaux.afghanistan reeling from a fierce assault that lasted 18 hours. these explosions happened in kabul's heavily guarded diplomatic neighborhood. afghan authorities say they have killed all but one of the attackers and he has been captured. the taliban are claiming responsible for the attacks but the captured insurgent says he worked for the haqqani network. nato is praising afghan forces for beating back the insurgents without the assistance of allied forces. >>> first members of a u.n. observer team plan to begin their work in syria today. they are setting up operations to monitor a tenuous cease-fire. it's already showing some signs of collapse. at least 19 people have been killed today alone. the u.n. estimates that at least 9,000 people have died since the protests began more than a year ago. >>> well, they spent $800,000 of your money on skits, clowns, mock award ceremonies. next hour we'll hear their answers about the spending scandal. the house oversight committee begins hearings o

>> reporter: hi, suzanne. that an f-18 jet with two crew members on board did go down in virginia beach. we are told by the u.s. navy the two member crew did eject safely. we are beginning to get initial pictures from the scene from our affiliate wavy. as you can see it shows some destruction on the ground and the apparent fire from the crash. the early word right now is that the two-member crew ejected from the f-18 but their condition on the ground not yet known or at least not yet being discussed by the u.s. navy. we are also told there's a grammar school in the area, but it's not in any danger from the crash. everyone there is fine. so we'll continue to monitor the situation an try and get a better understanding of what this damage is that we are seeing on the ground and the fire from this navy f-18 apparently crashing in virginia beach. the two-man crew ejecting at this point. >> barbara, can you tell us -- give us a sense of that area, what is actually there near that crash site? >> reporter: to the best
