is this going to build my own or the foot for support for each other? during his investigation, the journalist concluded that without the support of us top ross, it wouldn't be an impossible to implement such a can last source rite of ukrainian um, through the black market. they managed to solve some sensitive issues of the i'm all of me for the body. so chris thought, the main, so i wanted to tell you couple things that something to me. so you come to us for all of us, only reveals they probably is only 5. i mean, either brothers for on a, the, by, she quoted the bank or federal chest or i can eat up all, think it all the 1st the best or the the find a lot. i friday, the outside evaluator, it's been a capital easily got it. and they out of me and enough calls to, to get a bubble of officially got a louie and be able to problems with, with the, for myself to and i k i c level pulled a decrease of entity out of the math. and normally a and i and kick relocating for a family about a policy. so when i say that you've got a few come to that to be a bit of same vehicle, might of creech proposal, tennessee come to the me get a feel thought the clean the new to be joining us for a pleasant day and set meetings, billionaire, lifestyle, dalliances with african terrace and connections with the politicians and government officials all around the world, even inspired hollywood. the film, the story is quite accurate. but on like nicolas cage is kind of cops didn't go often in despite overwhelming evidence newtown, in court, only charged him with possession of drugs and diamonds. true tv thought the logistics have to close the loan. got you, so let me pull it out to get space simple. yeah, i mean it just eats. yeah. i mean it's, you know what i mean, i mean your show of a lot paid look it for you. lack of self. see on that to be an esl go heating that may not do that very so and they will do that k campbell, the company. you can see that fossil notes use our bank and see that for us. so the vagaries of each of these judicial system can be explained by one thing only needed was a link in a chain of interested and very powerful policy is so powerful the just for them the ukrainian parliament, i don't get special loans for instance, loan number 1919299 is and that is because they weren't sure whether it was the new months or 6. but the model was like, i thought it was a piece of what was new conclusion for us because someone was that, what is the city still? could i ask, who is it going to that just sufficient suddenly to give, looking at that just to be on the menu that ukraine traded arms on a statewide scale. the true sales volumes were uncovered by accidents. when in 2008, some money power had seized the cargo ship, the m v f i e. their quick, then they'll click lower here they looked at the feeling we're fighting as captain victor. nicole skate is now retired, but these photos on the was a newspaper clippings remind him of past events that prominently displayed them so that his family doesn't forget the hell captain. nicole and ski hot to india. what sort of a police car deal for this message? no mistake you left was admittedly no reason to triple possession of can you do that as much time and it ok the i'm gonna show us that it was which it was like when it's difficult because that's what the that's not going to police it number of susan, i thought i could do, i think so. can you get the bill of just the motion issue? has particularly as, as needed with emotion shoppers, majority of who are vocal about their support for palestine. uh, i really appreciate this because it's very helpful. haven't been many people are unfamiliar with a boy called list. so perhaps this app can provide some information because there are many types of boy costs when i'm maybe i'm interested in using this app in the future. i think it's extremely helpful. yeah. i see boy quotes have some well known products and instagram, but for a less than own products, it could be confusing. perhaps this application to be really useful. instead of searching the internet, we can use the know thanks application to get more immediate information on whether we can use a product. oh no. i never hear this sort of thing directly, but i once read about it in the group chat of months ago. but i didn't really pay attention to it at the time to pick up my motorcycle. of course this helps, especially for people like me would, that would be enough. there is an app that people can use in a easy, convenient way. it proves one thing. once a household name dominating the market, the company is now losing ground to local competitors. we hope that with the awareness of the community is boy thought will become more necessary and more successful. along with increased awareness by the local community, somebody. hopefully it will create a stronger boy thought community as well so much as consumer behavior, a shift in indonesia and beyond. the power of choice becomes a potent weapon and shaping corporate responsibility. living multinational with a pressing question to answer how building navigate the complex intersection of politics asked, makes, and business. vigorous diplomacy and pragmatism of the only means to ends the will in ukraine, according to the new us secretary of state. the admission came off that donald trump failed to settle the conflict with a new suppose 24 hours in the open office, a promise he made on the campaign trail. this is a complex, tragic conflict. the one that was started by vladimir putin has inflicted a tremendous amount of damage on ukraine and also that on russia, i would argue and, but also on the stability of europe. so the only way to solve these things, we gotta get back to pragmatism, but we're also going to get back to the seriousness here. and that is the hard work of diplomacy. now obviously, you know, neither is going to involve complex and hard diplomacy. it has to be vigorous, so it will not be simple. it will not be easy, but it is important. it has to happen. that's a priority. despite those things that they would have to have a peace deal on these 1st day in office, the new president instead found himself in charge of attending a special integration service as a self imposed deadline noon. when journalists later pressed him on his pay strategy, he appeared to lean more towards washington's go to sanctions policy and over the diplomacy, the us secretary of state. cool, cool. are you crazy? we you have additional stations on russia. sounds likely. sending weapons turned off the top so well, we'll look into that. we're talking to the landscape where we're going to be talking with president important very soon i and although the u. s. has positioned itself as ukraine's biggest advocates. those ties might just be challenged by the full year expiration date oh below. office policies seem to have just how dependable is washington ortiz? don't on puerto explorers. one day in office and trumps, already cleaning house, repealing biden's, executive orders one by one. direct your economy. i will assign day one orders to end all bide. restrictions on energy production terminate is insane. electric vehicle mandate 10. so is that your gas search board van reopen and why it will as go the big is site potentially anywhere in the world declared that 0 energy emerges. sounds a lot like trumps 1st term when he reversed brock obama's decision and took the us out of the paris climate agreement. data binding came along and reversed it right back. we're going to reverse trump's role backs of a 100 public health and environmental rules, and then for job path to greater ambition. we're going to get back into the parents' agreement, back into the business of leading the world. and assigning us and review while you're all here is a commitment. i made it, we're going to rejoin the parish. finally the call as of today, now trump's return and the powers agreement is back in the garbage can. in recent years, the united states has been posted to joint international agreements and initiatives that do not reflect our countries values or contributions to the pursuit of economic and environmental objectives. moreover, these agreements, the american taxpayer dollars to countries that do not require full merit financial assistance in the interest of the american people, back and forth, back and forth. it's like american politics is one big game of policy pain palm. and now, is anyone supposed to conduct good faith diplomacy with a power that renee exotics commitments so easily back in 2020? it was the same story after trump blamed china for the corporate pandemic and threatened to pull the us out of the world health organization. patient world health organization has become nothing more than a corrupt global is scam paid for by the united states, but owned and controlled by china. that inviting broad washington right back into the fault. the world health organization plays a crucial role in the world's fight against the deadly cobit 19 pandemic. as well as countless other threats to global health and health security, the united states will continue to be a full participant and a global leader in confronting such threats. and advancing global health and health security. surprised surprise, we're back to square 2016 with trump once again ordering the us out of the w 8, show drawing, withdrawn from the world health organization. so the same goes for l g b t inclusivity policies, which binding revived after trump slap them down during his 1st term, the weeks ahead i'll be reaffirming the federal government's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and accessibility building on the work we started and your obama by the registration and now another flip flop, i will also end the government policy of trying to socially engineer race and gender and do every aspect of public and private life. the new affords a society that is color blind and merit based as of today, it will henceforth be the official policy of the united states government that there are only 2 genders, male and female. this political skits, of framing. it has been especially relevant for the issue of the legal migration. we all know trump made it the center piece of his 1st political campaign. but by who put it in reverse, on every saying that he could present and buy and well announce that the department of homeland security will take action. designed to help us citize

t m poured a sports. i don't think that the home us would be a we're come to the participants in this upcoming political line to escape the police senior and officer. t is also weekends by. it's already internal divisions, a s o, in my opinion, we might see a new faces in the future and negotiations. it's will proceed without the presence of the, the figures to who has instigated the conflict. especially suggesting that to me it's in the whole himself and his extreme is over his the a mix stream is governments and may be also side the line did that. however, a piece of process will be launched under a trump administration. like abraham accord for a new law, i think it will be the basis of these process, which is basically a piece for piece a for the lot piece by force, which might include on relevance parties and mid to lease. so basically the conference may also involve a representative of from the photos to noon on thursday may be leaving and also will be come along as soon. yeah. as well. one thing i noticed over the last couple of weeks since the election of trump is that there is barely any mention of all the you and the resolutions on the palestinian question. do you think any of those resolutions which are still considered to be part of the international law panel? do you think they still there and it's the goodness that comes at this point. well, in my own opinion that you are the resolutions are a similar to the way a disengagement and observer forces. and for example, interest, you didn't go on high. so there where international observation forces attached to with the monitoring this situation. however, after the fall of, i thought we saw that, how is it the here are some sources less of a, a, a and because it's right in high sees the implementation of they just engagement agreements and, and vi did subsequently occupied the entire city of car nicer all, what did they, you in peacekeeping force? do they, they didn't, they couldn't do anything regarding that. therefore, i believe that the discussions about the u. n. nation's and it's f, a legation organization should include considerations about the need of recourse do during the re, uh, construction in the international system itself. that has to be needed since the 2nd a words were re, for me, the united nation is on earth to is the $34.00 building. and you multi pull or order which can address address, sorry, such as 2 issues like the policy and cause that you have mentioned now. uh i gather that you are not very optimistic on the prospect of the palestinian space as you are not. uh, you don't seem to be uh that optimistic on the return of the goal and hives to, to syria. but uh, that would suggest that the, the policy of, of israel and the united states pursuit for so many dickens the policy of, for, is the policy of bloodshed, the policy of the big pad uncompromising dictated that it has succeeded. so we can say that it has to be inspected at the succeed, it may be temporary in the car and according to the current events and the trajectory of the events. so that's we could see as since the 7th of october, 2023. i mean the, the whole, the bulk of the people who were supporting what they called it, the resistance of thrones. they were often mistake that this came a 7th october. we'll bring some just to the pull a scene in close. but what will happen then? there are 3 cushions also that is sold that it's, it's a roll. could be opposites a the, the, the exactly opposite, the desired all calm look odd to that resistance. so from now, i mean is it, there is no around, look at how mosse and, and god's all what happened top of things off. it's almost leaders, erosion and also the steering stain of how much in, in the, in augusta and living on the same scenario. we could see that say, is there a manager to top all the, the 1st as sick on the top as the leaders. and most importantly has enough to allow himself in syria the adult or we deem it was speed. it has been the top pulse. i mean, and looking at you won the e one is the left uh, um, alone again in the, in this arena. well, uh, this is actually one of the biggest questions in global politics in the year of to 1000 a 25. what will happen between israel and iran and whether israel, emboldened by its advances in syria, we'll go ahead with direct stripes against a rainy and nuclear facilities or whether iran will continue it's policy. uh, also a very sort of public belligerence towards the west, towards the israel, and serve therefore, either tomba, administration, all of these rarely governments and over its pre tax for attacking them. how do you use these things? these 2 nations will sort of navigate that animosity, and these new circumstances won the prize of escalating itself. hi. first of all, to answer this question, we must recognize. that is why you, we know today is not the same as the one existed prior to october 7. as the following, this say date is right, you backed by the u. s. has to be operating in the media, least with dial to regard for international law for a human wides. even global public opinion. they don't see any, all of these. they know one thing that october offense of has posed a significant threat to is there are in existence. so given the statements of from is right, you offer shows, particularly from you to the whole himself. it seems for me that it is reasonable to believe that is why you indeed did turn in mind to target you want. however, it looks like it will target before a my own opinion, the hold he's backed by you want in yemen 1st to predict itself. so from i need a potential, a strikes the from other directory. so the question here is not whether it's not you has the car, it's just like you want or not. the question is how and when will do that? let's just forget that that is right. has a gone a long way, destroying how much has the law and asked idea, syria to reach you want in the ends. right? so, so, so uh, but how and when this, nobody can predict what we can see. uh and uh, uh, if we want to answer that question, we could, we can look up from both the data and all the evidence that it's happening around us as it seems, that is right. you and, you know, even i to the states are in favor of for redeem it. change the now you that's, it happens with assets similar might be applied in the you want as well, where iranian governments may a, therefore, become a targets for internal just to belie station with the airports to meet, to mobilize, the countries opposition forces to drive the change from within so by we can get you ron of, from within and exerting economy pressure. is it all those little additional sanctions? the, the ways to might aim to exert a to exert concessions of from, in iran, in regards of it's in your clear program. essentially, the goal is to a clip, it was a close and surprise it uh, from its strategic influence making. it's more the more version of those 2 x during the amount of pollution and subs due to, to internationally a 4th stage strategy by the way, have applied in syria and have succeeded. so, well, i'm the instructor to they tried to applied to russia, but it has not succeeded the yet. and hopefully with countries like russia, china and the global majority that actually wants to leave by international law that is in favor of long term cooperation. data is in favor of agreement, is that a sign to be upheld? >> yeah, in the digging process, that's exactly it, there was a lot of myth, and also just over propaganda at the time. one of the key sources was newspapers, and it was the realization that i think often historians, scholarly historians and non-scholarly historians both take newspapers to literally. that there are descriptions that read like reporting of an event that people saw or attended, they have a similarity that is misleading and they have been heavily edited, they have been heavily rewritten, or simply cooked up to describe an event in a different way. and so, that happened often enough, and then of course, this was very useful, because newspapers would print each other's news copies, so one newspaper runs a story in massachusetts and a newspaper in virginia or south carolina runs it, and while other bostonians might know that is not exactly how it happened, no one in rhode island let alone virginia would be able to indict that account, and so, it became the reality as a result. and so, i began to realize there was this slurring epidemic basically of press releases that were happening in the news from patriot leaders. i started to pull on those, and that i really started getting into the merchant accounts and merchant ledgers that revealed such a different story. >> that's great. so, we are sitting here in old south meeting house, and i think most americans at some point in their lives learned a thing or two about the events that happened here in 1773. we have this idea of the boston tea party that has been shaped and reshaped over time. and you have given us an account that helps us understand, that helps correct some of the impressions that seem to have taken hold in our popular memory over time. so, i think one of the ideas that many of us carry is that the actions that happened on that night in december 1773, were sort of acting upon a consensus in the town that the tea should be destroyed, that tea was an artifact of this imperial struggle that should be resisted. but you maybe don't see it quite that same way. so, i want to ask you two questions. one, can you help us understand what folks in this room or in the town of boston might have thought about the tea at that time, in december 1773, but also, what is it like to be picking away at an important national myth? what is the experience of being a scholar working in this vein been for you? >> to answer the second question first, the expense has been very weird, because i am a scholar that lives in another country, so i am often trying to figure out what you people here are still thinking about it, because i don't live here. so, it is a certain distance to it. but then just walking by yesterday, i heard a tour guide outside of the burying ground talking about this, that, and consent, and some other things that seemed very cooked up to me, and so i thought, i'm on the right track, there is still a lot of debunking to debunk. but to the consensus question you mentioned earlier, definitely, the moment of the tea ship's arrival was of a peak moment in the political contest in boston and it was a peak moment because boston patriots, the sons of liberty, as well as the more polite -- politically acceptable leaders that presented the clean face of the patriot movement to the public, it is useful to think of them in this divided sort of element, you have got a [ inaudible ] type and you got the i.r.a. underneath them, both agitating toward the same goal, but the clean-cut politicians and the paramilitary types underneath them. and in boston, boston patriots had really struggled in the previous several years after the end of the last boycott, went up and down the colonies, they had agreed we will stop our boycott of other british goods, but we will continue our boycott of tea. they were supposed to continue. while new yorkers and philadelphians managed this quite successfully. bostonians like virginians, carolinians, completely failed and ended up consuming and importing large amounts of tea in 1771 and 1772. in '72, i think about 40% of all the tea that came to north america was british tea, brought here by private merchants. 40% of that was just coming to boston. and that says that patriots had to have been anxious about getting people to subscribe to these political ideas they had about consuming things, because obviously, lots of people didn't subscribe to these ideas, and they demonstrated that every day when they bought consumer goods they weren't supposed to buy. and the arrival of this india company tea presented the possibility of being a final blow and pushing bostonians into more broadly accepting this arrangement. so, particularly around the tea tax, which we probably all know, this text that parliament was putting on tea, had been in place for years, there was no real concern about establishing a precedent of the text being in place, it had been in place for half a decade already, and bostonians had been paying it. but the other problem that patriots had was this issue of consent, so, if you don't consent or you don't want to pay this tea tax, there is a great way to do it, just don't buy any tea. problem solved, right? the tax is not a tax that everyone has to pay all the time, it is a tax that is levied on the goods when they are imported and then passed on to the consumer only if he buys it. so, the easiest way to solve this problem is just to tell people don't buy any tea or just don't buy any duty tea. that would be the most simple solution, the least amount of work, the least amount of trouble. they obviously knew they really couldn't get away with this, this wouldn't work. and so, the real problem was that too many people actually did consent to taxation without representation. it wasn't really a big problem for them, they were happy to pay the tea tax, and this was the real problem. so, what they needed to do was act like a government that imposed its will on everyone in a while whether you like it or not, you have to obey it. and so, this is what the tea party was, forcing everyone to not consume it, whether they consented to consume it or not. >> so, you are really looking at two layers of change that are interacting with each other, right? over a long period of time, there are changes in consumption that are bound up with consumer behavior that are really an artifact of culture as it was being shaped in the british atlantic world. and then you have got another layer that is the politics that governs consumption, which intersects with an imperial crisis that is reaching a sort of critical impasse, is that right? >> yeah. so, i know that your work is really focused on this really critical inflection period in the 1770s, but for our audience who may be just beginning to think their way into these issues, help us understand what the ark of the sort of behavioral peace looks like. how does tea become a favorite drink in the colonies? and you know, how deeply entrenched is it in people's lives by the time we get to the 1770s? >> okay, great question. so, if you look at someone like benjamin franklin who was fairly old by the time of the boston tea party, and no longer in boston, but -- [ inaudible ] people in the 1720s didn't have nice things. there weren't many nice things you could afford to have but if you look at the material culture of how everyday people lived, a level of furnishings and homes were quite low, the amount of imported consumer goods that people could eat or drink were not very much, but this build up over time, over the 50 years that followed, by the time in the 1770s, this growing consumer culture that north american colonists and british colonists of north america could engage in. it is about having nicer furniture, imported furniture perhaps from elsewhere if you are wealthy, but proper tables and chairs and cabinets and cupboards that their ancestors may not have had, it may have simply been a stool at a table. and some sort of a half made bed may have been all that they had. newly made linens and sheets that could have been woven in a mill in lancaster in england, rather than made at home. you could be having imported drinks, madera, coffee, tea, and greater amounts than your father or your mother or your grandparents could have bid and so, one of the problems of the boycotts in the 1770s is it is saying now that we can have nice things, you can't have nice things. and life is still a bit nasty, a bit british, and a bit short in the 1770s, and so it is these nice things that make it enjoyable for people, so it is hard to take them away. >> rate. yeah, i often -- we get a lot of visitors to our sites, the old south meeting house and the old statehouse every year, who come here to learn about the revolution, and i find i often have to remind visitors that the revolution is only a part of people's lives, right? they're living full lives, they are navigating the day today of their family's activities and their communities activities, and it is not all politics all the time, even though the noise of politics is outside all the time. so, we had a little hint of how the tension between the political layer and the cultural piece might have intersected here in boston, but boston is not all of north america, right? i mean, i hate to break it to all of us who are here in boston, but there are other colonies out there. you start the book with a chapter that is titled the tea party that wasn't, which is about what happened down in charlestown, south carolina, because tea ships went to many different ports, right? so, can you just give us a little bit of a glimpse of how things it may have played out differently in other places, what happened in south carolina? >> yes, boston was very strange, it was the only city that had a big fight over the tea that it couldn't resolve. all the other places the tea ships went, they found a resolution, some sort of coming to terms between the local customs officials, the governor, the tea merchants that were set to receive it, and the sons of liberty in the patriot organization. in south carolina, the tea ship arrived, christopher and the sons of liberty campaigned against it, and they had a huge meeting in the exchange, which was this large building of the customs house facilities on the ground floor, and above was the main meeting hall, it saved the same political purpose as this old south wood. and they resolve that they were definitely not going to let the tea in, and while all the firebrands and politicians were yakking away upstairs in the great hall of the exchange, south carolina merchants unloaded duty and british tea off the ship. not the company is tea, but other private parcels. paid the duty at the customs house underneath while the politicians are still talking upstairs, put them in carts and carried them to shops and offer them for sale. and the talking politicians only worked this out several days later. so, this was not the greatest success. and then they went around after this meeting and started asking merchants to sign a boycott, or sign a pledge that that they wouldn't sell duty to tea, and the merchants kept finding a way to not be at the shop when the campaigners were by, it would say will come back tomorrow, i haven't really made a decision yet. they did their best bid and then they did what all people do, they then cast doubt on what the previous meeting had even agreed to do. this is what you do when you want to mess up your school board meeting, you do exactly like that. so, that's what the merchants did but and eventually, despite all their struggles, the patriots in south carolina held on, they got the agreement not to have the tea ship landed, but for the local merchants to wash their hands of it, which happened, but the merchants couldn't send the ship back. and so, the customs collectors used the tea after the 20 day deadline, the exact sort of 20 day deadline that the boston tea party was trying to avoid happening. he sees the tea, he impounded it for nonpayment of the duty, locked it up in the exchange, and it stayed there without any trouble, right? in boston, they were worried that if they locked it up and at the kings customs warehouse, that it would be broken and people would steal the tea or that merchants would unload it and sell it to the public, but in south carolina, they managed to come to some kind of terms with the customs collector. i suspect in many of these sports, what happened is the merchants, many of them patriotic, offered a bit of a tribe as a customs collector, so he knew how this job worked, so he impounded it and he never offered it for sale. and the problem was solved, no conflicts, no struggle, no tears. no revolution. >> well, a good reminder that the whole world was not boston. in the 1770s, right? but even in boston, a fence happened that are not consistent with the memory that we have kept of this moment. you spend a little bit of energy trying to chase down the fourth tea ship, tell us a little bit about the story of the william and why it matters. >> the william is a fascinating story. so, the company has shipped its tea on four separate ships, the dartmouth, the eleanor, the beaver, and the william, and they arrived in massachusetts in that order. and three of them arrived in boston properly. the dartmouth, eleanor, and the beaver, fine. the william hit a store and wrecked off of cape cod and a wrecked on december 11th. now, that could have been the end of it. it is hard to imagine that crates full of tea are going to survive a shipwreck. it would have been a tea party already, you would think, but it wasn't. the ship's cargo was salvaged. and so, the merchants test with handling affairs in boston, we call them the consignees, one of the consignees got on his horse and rode out to the cape and sorted this out. he found some men to salvage the tea and he paid them in tea from the williams consignment for their labor, which was no small feat, and potentially quite a dangerous job to be salvaging this off of the rocks where the ship had wrecked, and of course, rocks and waves and the storm are dangerous places, so he paid them in tea, and after several days, he finally found another ship captain dumb enough to take the tea on board and bring it into town. and then he brought it to castle william, which is now for independence here. which was then a freestanding -- on a freestanding island in the harbor. and so, he didn't bring it into boston town itself, he didn't bring it to griffin's work, he knew better than that. and the result was that he got it lodged in the castle, safely under lock and key again, of the customs officials, they seized it, they impounded it, they had the key for it, but then their room was now in a castle that was defended by the 64th regiment that was surrounded by stone walls, that was surrounded by an ocean that had the royal navy in it. so, it was much more secure than the kings warehouse in town. and it stayed there for the next year and a half. and for the longest time, i cannot figure out what happened to it, no one figured it out. i think most people assumed it disappeared, because the british blew up the castle when they evacuated in march 1776. and so, if the tea were still there, that would have just been blown up. so, there was a real possibility of that, and i kept on digging, trying to figure out what happened. i thought if i can't find anything, the best guess is boom. but then eventually, after checking everything, after checking military records and checking private correspondence and this and that, on a lark, looking for something else, i was will -- looking through the east india records, and from 1775 where no one bothered to check, there was the record of receiving payment for the t from the william after it had been sold in boston. it was sold when boston had been liberated by the british from patriot rule, and where british loyalists with the massachusetts roots had evacuated from the rest of the countryside and fled into boston, so the city population had collapsed from about 13,000 to 2000 or 3000 people, plus the royal navy personnel and the soldiers. but these people were now free from patriot government, and the patriots in the countryside were free from the loyalists, so they had both gotten rid of each other. and now, in this market suddenly, there were consumers who were buying, and so that is when it finally got sold. >> that is such a great story. and i want to invite you just to take a moment to tell us what that felt like, personally, to find those records. right? because that is not something that happens all the time, right? here is something that nobody else has been able to chase down, you have spent a ton of time looking for it, you have given
