i'm t.j. holmes, welcome to this cnn saturday morning, and it's a holiday weekend where minnesota's state government is shut down. that could take a toll on some of the more vulnerable people in that state. we're talking about services for the deaf, child care subsidies for the poor, and help lines for the disabled. none of those services are available because lawmakers could not compromise on a budget. also, 20,000 state workers are without their jobs right now. cnn's chris welch joins me now from st. paul. good morning to you. and you help us understand just how many people in the state right now are being affected by this shutdown. >> t.j., i'd be surprised if anyone would say they weren't affected, you know, in any way. but first of all, it's the fourth of july weekend and all these state parks and rest stops, they're all closed, and a lot of people are traveling today. that's just a minimal impact on -- with what's going to be happening with this. because you mentioned it in the intro. a

>> not with any shred of credibility, t.j. >> okay. american people understand. and yes, we're all trying to find solutions here, but republicans need to listen to the american people. because they understand and actually agree that any deal that happens should include spending cuts as well as new revenues. it's the only way to do this in a fair and balanced way. and speaker boehner mentioned the additional $400 billion and talked about the white house moving the goalpost. the reason that came up is because republicans demanded a trigger that would mean the repeal of health care reform. come on! at that point, president obama didn't walk away, but then the democrats said, okay, if you want to talk about that, let's talk about increased revenues. that's how you negotiate. you do not walk away. the president did not demand that. he wanted to keep talking. republicans didn't. >> lenny, can you defend in any way why you can say that the white house hasn't been serious? >> well, if you're not willing to even look at health care reform and s

t.j.? >> all right. and they could be fined a hefty amount if they don't have this thing done in time. kareen, thank you for the view from there. i want to turn now to our sandra endo, who has a different vantage point. and sandra, it sounds like, so far, so good. is that true? >> reporter: yeah, fingers crossed, t.j., because after months of preparation, after all the hype, after warning the public to stay home, don't get in their cars, well, take a look. we're here on ventura boulevard, one of the busiest and biggest boulevards here in san fernando valley. if carmageddon was happening, t.j., you would be seeing it, but this almost looks like an empty 405. this street is pretty empty and smooth sailing for a lot of the cars flowing behind me. we've seen a couple of buses, free buses and free train rides for the public during this shutdown. but those buses so far have been mpt as well. weefr seen a couple of early morning people coming out for coffee on bikes. that's another way local offic

i'm t.j. 40e78s.ood morning, as always, to our men and women watching us now on the american network. we'll have plenty of coverage throughout the morning on what's happening in new york today. but we need to start with norway. the suspect in those horrific attacks says he did it and he did it all by himself. that's what police say they are hearing from the suspect in the norway massacre. a memorial you're seeing here and hearing is under way for the victims going on in norway. at least 92 people died in two attacks, but there's still some young people missing on utoyi island. the suspect, anders behring breivik is expected to be in court tomorrow for the first time. the attorney says his client described the attacks as horrible, but necessary. he says breivik will explain that in court. police aren't done looking for possible suspects, anyone that may have helped him plan or carry out the attacks. they say the investigation may taim take time because they're going to look into every possible angle. d

t.j., the top story is the heat. it is the big story.ocus on the weather for some time to come. >> not just hot, but dangerous heat. was it last summer or the summer before when it got so hot in chicago and a number of people died in the heat wave there? >> scary times. >>> 13 minutes past the hour. i think we figured out. we talked about the minnesota shutdown. two weeks ago, we had the players on. we may have found a reason why they decided to compromise. to our viewers, a deal close now that would end the government shutdown in minnesota. the democratic governor said he will accept the republican proposal with a few modifications. he will call a special session next week to try to end the two-week shutdown. closed state parks. 22,000 state workers went home. this may be the thing to get them to the bargaining table. beer. the makers of miller beer and coors are victims to the shutdown because their liquor license expired and the problem here is, reynolds, to get it renewed, they need state workers to process the paper work. they are n

>> reporter: that's right, t.j. tomorrow, though, they will be starting about 9:00 in the morning eastern time. that's when all of this will get underway. it will start with the prosecution going first. they're going to go up and argue to that jury that they should convict casey anthony of first-degree murder charges. after they go up and do their arguments, the defense will go up and the defense will argue the state has not proved its case, do not convict casey anthony of these charges. in florida, the prosecution gets a second chance after the defense goes to plug any holes the defense may have poked in their case. once the prosecution goes after the defense and rebuts that, the judge will read some instructions to the jury and then the jury will begin deliberations in this case. >> how long do they expect this to go? what are they planning for? of course, the judge is trying to keep this thing moving along. he probably wanted to get it done before this holiday weekend. that's not going to happen. these jurors are

abc's t.j. winick is here with more. good morning, t.j. >> reporter: good morning, bianna.ring the original trial, the prosecution had no eyewitnesses and no clear motive. the case rested almost entirely on two key pieces of evidence. well, independent experts now say that evidence was tainted. for amanda knox, the seattle exchange student convicted of murder, these court appointed experts may be the key to her freedom. she's been locked away in an italian prison for nearly four years. but this morning, in court for her appeal, the victim's attorneys announced they want each party's forensic experts to retestify. this after new revelations which could very well set amanda free. it was november 2007 when knox along with boyfriend raffaello sollecito and a third man were charged in the stabbing death of her roommate meredith kercher. prosecutors claim it was a drug-fueled evening, a sex game gone wrong. in 2009 knox was convicted and sentenced to 26 years in prison, sollecito to 25. back in court for her appeal earlier this week, the 24-year-old knox looked fragile and pale.

i'm t.j. holmes. let's start with new video.t on the town with his wife. hours before this scene, a judge released him from house arrest. he, of course, the former head of the international monetary fund who is accused of sexually assaulting a new york hotel maid. there were problems with the accuser's testimony. susan candiotti has more. >> reporter: prosecutors laid it out for the judge in court and in a letter to the defense. they said they turned up troubling outright lies by the maid. among them, her story changed about where she was and what she did right after strauss-kahn allegedly assaulted her in his hotel suite. at first, she said she waited in the hallway until her supervisor came. she later admitted she cleaned another room and came back to dsk's suite. she lied about a gang rape in a political asylum application. she admitted faking information to the irs about her dependents and income. she told other lies they did not detail. the maid's attorney would have none of it. he made an impassioned defense about her. he
