now around the world not only in syria and iraq but we're having attacks, a combination of al chi ta dand paris and we're not immune to this. we have to turn every attention to protecting the homeland. ultimately that means we have to attack isis at its source which is in iraq and syria. and it's going to be a long and difficult struggle. i think we are making some headway in iraq. we haven't made much headway in syria, but i think we're going to have to defeat isis in iraq first. and i think we have to be careful not to take full ownership of the civil war in syria. as some are urging us to do. which would require us to go in with at least 100 to 200,000 troops to depose bashar al assad and potentially occupy that country for a decade. it is going to require a wholesome effort by this country, but i don't think we want to repeat the model we used in afghanistan. >> do you believe isis in this claim that they have -- that this american hostage was killed by a jordanian air strike? >> i don't believe it for a minute. for the reasons that the jordanian government has said as well which is
