>> well, tamron. first of all, u.s. officials stress that the president, we're told, has not made any disdecisions or given any orders for u.s. military air strikes against military targets in syria. but, you know, they're getting ready. it's an effort by the u.s. military to select potential targets should the president give that order. and what they're looking at primarily are facilities, huge facilities, infrastructure, equipment, weapons, and that critical lifeline. that supply line that is constantly fed isis in syria from iraq. mostly with confiscated american weapons and vehicles that isis was able to capture during their sweep through iraq. that's the kind of things they're looking at. u.s. intelligence officials tell us it would probably be pretty difficult to pinpoint those high valued targets. as evidenced the by the failed attempt to rescue american hostages including james foley in july. by the time those delta force commandos hit the ground, the hostages were already gone. without good, reliable, accurate

i'm tamron hall. this is "newsnation." we begin with breaking news out of virginia where a military fighter jet has crashed. the massachusetts air national guard fighter jet was heading to new orleans when it went down 115 miles southwest of washington, d.c. let's get more details from nbc news chief pentagon correspondent. what do you have for us? >> it was an f-15 c fighter bomber jet that was headed on a training mission from there national guard base in barns, massachusetts to new orleans when the plane just suddenly dropped out of the sky. it's not clear exactly what happened, why it happened, or at this point the status of the pilot is even unknown. it's not clear whether he was able to safely eject from the airplane. now, according to air force officials we're talking to, that plane on a cross country trip like that would have had at least one more plane with it or probably a formation of at least four planes to go to that training mission in new orleans. so there's got to be some chatter back
