tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 morning news. >>> and a standoff came to an end just a few hours ago. police arrested one suspect wanted for shooting at a chp patrol car at an east oakland home. they surroundinged them 3:30 and the men in custody is accused of interstate 880 where the window was shattered. >>> an eight-year-old boy is trying to recover after almost drowning in a swimming pool. >> reporter: we are here at the housing complex and you can see the pool is locked tonight and this is where the boy nearly drowned. we are told he is in serious condition at stamford hospital. crews responded in north san jose. a boy was pulled from the pool and a teen began cpr before paramedics arrived. this pool is several feet in the middle but we are told the child and two others were playing a game. the boy was resuscitated and rushed to the hospital. they are supposed to be accompanied by somebody is 18 or older, on this sign it says charge children but be accompanied with an adult and we will try to see if we can get an update on his condition and what, if anything other people had seen

ktvu tara moriarty has been out there since 4:30. can tell us now what caused us and some charges that may be filed against the driver, tara. >>> fire hydrants are not cheap and can run 11,000 dollars and that is what used to be in this hole until this morning a drunk driver came along >>> crews say at least 50,000 gallons of water gushed several stories high into the air for three hours this morning. that is because witnesses say a drunk driver smashed into the fire hydrant. crews had a hard time turning it off pause the force of the water was so great. eventually workers parked their truck over the geyser and were able to get in there and shut it off. it happened around 2:00 this morning. by 5:00 they turned it off. police took the driver into custody. luckily no one was hurt and there was no flooding to nearby homes. public works crews did not have to shut off water to neighbors but there was low water for three hours. the person responsible for the accident may be forced to pay a hefty water bill. out here live you can see the wa

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live. >> reporter: good afternoon. people who were here said they had no idea that a jockey was killed. that's because it happened here away from the stands, near the water tower. it's the first time a tragedy like this has struck in 37 years. the horses hit it the tracks just like they do every day during fair but today was no normal day. >> they feel it. they just feel for their brother, you know. they know what their families are going through. this kid was trying to get rolling. he was trying to do good like they all are. so something like this, for something like this to happen, it's the worst. >> yesterday, jockey jorge herrera died in the last race, riding the number 8 gray horse when he clipped another horse's heels. he fell over his horse's head on to the track and was trampled. >> in this situation, there was nothing that was going to save him because he hilt the ground going 35, 40 miles per hour. the trauma was too great. >> reporter: former jockey darryl haire says that the mood is somber among his fellow

ktvu tara moriarty is out at the fairgrounds this morning with the tragic story.. >> well, we know that jorge herrera's horse had made it across the finish line but alone. let's take a look at video taken from that race yesterday. it was the last race of the day. right before 5:00. the 33-year-old from mexico fell from his horse and later died. he was on a gray horse number eight. it's believed he got too close to another horse and clipped him. his house stumbled. the horse falls over herrera's head. >> we are all very deeply saddened by this. this has not occurred at our racetrack since 1975 so we are all in a little bit of a shock but our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. >> reporter: officials say herrera died from massive head trauma. he won 55 races in his career earning more than $70,000. the last time a jockey died was in 1975 on the same exact day july 5th. we know something will be done to honor the fallen jockey. we will be talking with fair officials coming up at 9:00 this morning. we'll of course talk about that -- we'll of course pass that in

ktvu channel 2 reporter tara moriarty is in santa cruz covering the investigation into natasha noland'seath. >> reporter: people are shocked. the victim that worked here was carefree and fun and they just cannot believe she is gone. 25-year-old natasha noland died when she fell out of a party bus and was run over. officers say noland was fighting with a 20-year-old woman when the back bus door somehow opened and the two fell out. >> there are two mechanisms for the door to open. either manually or an emergency lever that is near the door. >> reporter: they were under -- the woman under the legal drinking age was not seriously injured. >> so easily prevented. it's just horrible this happened to such a beautiful, nice girl. she comes from a caring family. a huge loving family. >> reporter: the accident comes as a bill seeking to clamp down on party buses works its way through the legislature. it would prevent under age drinking aboard the buses. so far no charges have been filed against the bus company or driver. no word yet on whether the young woman involved in the fight will face crimi

ktvu channel 2 news. >>> the fbi is now leading the investigation into an unusual case of vandalism. it involved a building on twin peaks in san francisco. and tara moriarty says it had the potential to cripple much of san francisco's emergency communications system. tara. >> reporter: this radio hub is in a very public place. anyone can walk, bike, and drive up here. it illustrates the point it has vulnerable. why would someone want to break into the perimeter. it happened yesterday morning around 9:00 when city workers discovered that vandals had cut a hole into a chain link fence and slipped inside. they didn't make it into the building but they were able to cut exposed cables possibly connecting air conditioning. >> nothing was stolen. none of the wiring was pulled out and stolen. right now it's being treated as a vandalism. >> reporter: san francisco police and fire as well as emergency services rely on radio transmissions from twin peaks. none were interrupted but the fbi was notified because this communications facility is so crucial. right now officials are using surveillance footage to see if it provides clues to who did this. >>> new this mornin
