ktvu's tara moriarty joining us live now at the scene where all of the victims went out safely. good morning, tara. >> reporter: 24 units were damaged here. so that means families from those units went scrambling when the flames broke out here at the galway terrace apartments. actually, the bulk of the fire is located at the back of this complex. now the fire started last night and it started one of the units and quickly raced through to the attic and fire said this building is made out of wood shake that made the fire especially difficult to tackle but crews were able to get the flames under control within a half an hour. >> it was a pretty hairy, we almost had crews fall through the roof. the roof was almost burning through very weak and it was running pretty good. >> reporter: again, everyone got out safely. no one was hurt. red cross helped find the victims a temporary place to stay and investigators will be back on scene when the sun comes up to examine the debris and see what started the fire. we may see some folks back to retrieve some of the belongings. we've seen some p

tara moriarty, ktvu channel 2 news. >>> 8:35. jose police department has become the bay area's first law enforcement agency to get a drone. this morning, ktvu news confirmed the police department got the unmanned drone back in january using $7,000 in federal grant money. it looks a lot like this one. the guidelines for its use, though, that still has not been developed. but san jose police plan to use the drone to help the bomb squad assess threats. other bay area police agencies may use it for that same purpose. >>> a shortage of officers could force the san jose police department to reassign motorcycle traffic officers to the patrol units. san jose police tell ktvu that the department's 11 motorcycle officers may be reassigned to patrol car units. now, police are reportedly considering this because there are not enough officers to respond to emergency calls. the san jose police department has struggled to retain its officers since the passage of measure b which reduced their pension benefits. >>> supporters of doctors medical c

ktvu's tara moriarty is out there now to tell us and shown us what happened out there. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning. there is a notice that shows a city inspector did come out here about a half-hour after the crash to survey the damage. he says that this entrance is not safe. you can see there is a stick propping up the building here. if we pan to the left, you can see that there's some stuff boarded up here and that's where a brick wall used to be and then the front door is completely shattered. that's on the side of the building. since this is the entrance that customers use, we'll have to see if the store is able to stay open. firefighters say that a truck with a camper shell on top fired into the front of the business on manor boulevard at 10:30 last night. this store, house of liquors, was open. no one inside was hurt. firefighters say the store must be inspected thoroughly to make sure it's safe to open up. >> currently we're having to shore it up. we'll put lumber material up. >> reporter: investigators say they don't know if alcohol was a factor

ktvu's tara moriarty joins us live from an a.c. transit bus stop in oakland with more on what is being eliminated. good morning, tara. >> reporter: well, good morning. some people are not hampy about these -- happy about the paper transfers being eliminated. starting today, you will have to buy an all-day pass to board the bus. that will cost you $5. a.c. transit wanted to implement program because it would take less time for people to board the bus. it's expected to save money by eliminating fraud from transfers. we spoke to one woman who takes b.a.r.t. and the bus every weekday into oakland for her job. she said instead of paying $1.25 for her bus transfer now she will have to cough up an extra $3.25 a day. >> i came in all the way from antioch. i take the bus. i take b.a.r.t. and then this one. >> reporter: now, anyone using a clipper card will automatically have the all-day pass. she says she will be forced to buy one. the problem is, many riders say clipper cards are not easy for them to fid. they are sold -- find. they are so

live in livermore is tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >>> late night fire caused a very tense situationed shortly after 11:00 last night at sixth and virginia streets near interstate 280. a handful of propane tanks caught fire. the risk of a major fire and explosion led to the evacuation of several nearby homes and it briefly forced the closure of a stretch of interstate 280. >> they were venting propane. this was a very large farm. our concern is if the other tanks were impinged upon, we could have a very large fire. possibly an explosion. >> no one was hurt. investigators say the fire may have started at a nearby homeless camp and spread to the propane tank facility. >>> temporary closures still in effect on a pain road into yosemite national park because of a big wild fire this that area. the fire started in the area just after 3:00 on saturday. it has forced a temporary closure on the crane flat bridal bear creek. over the weekend those campgrounds were evacuated and we're finding out evacuation orders will stay in effect until wednesday. >> it's a dry year. >> the red cross has set

tara moriarty ktvu channel 2 news. >> thank you. >>> a late night fire at a san jose building that was filled with hundreds of propane tanks caused very tough moments. ktvu janine de la vega is joining us live from san jose. so what does the scene look like right now? >> reporter: firefighters have left but we're here at virginia and sixth streets where firefighters told us this is a very large propane farm and it is aban topped. you can see there quite a bit of them. and firefighters wanted to make sure the fire did not spread inside here. it was called in shortly after 11:00 last night. when firefighters arrived they first spotted a vegetation fire. the fire spread around the protein farm. firefighters were concerned so they were if venting -- close interstate 280 for 20 minutes. >> the origin of the cause is still under investigation. there are some homeless encampments in the areas but we will still have to get to the origin to figure out what happened. >> no one was injured in the fire. from is a -- and there are homeless pee do -- reporting live janine de la vega ktvu channel 2 n
