many of those teamsters members were in fact truck drivers.g industry is actually seeing a recession or a slowdown the past year, year and a half, so it will be more challenging for these drivers to not only find other trucking jobs, but certainly find other union trucking jobs. there is now only two large union less than truckload players left in the space and for those truck drivers to find other jobs where they can have the same sort of pension and health care benefits it may be , challenging. lisa: no surprise, trucking is part of the lifeblood of this country. so there are a lot of layers here, but one of them involves that huge government loan to this company. now we know again it was $700 million in covid relief loans, specifically national security related. this company got 95% of all of the national security related covid money even out. congress found in a report that yellow actually did not meet the national security criteria, but the loan came to them because the trump administration made a separate recommendation. can you help us

it comes down to the teamsters union agreement.e country which is if you are asking for higher wages or commodity costs or whatever the increased cost, it will be weighing on your margins. the teamsters deal got a pretty penny off these negotiations. the part-time wage floor is at $21. that goes through 2028 so you're saying the margin pressure throughout the next couple of years. they are also dealing with a decline in volume. we know the economy across the globe slowing down so they have to make it up somewhere. there also dealing with diversifying the customer base which means their biggest customer is amazon logistics. amazon logistics is economically sensitive. then you need to make sure you are diversifying with small and midsize customers. they'd been trying to do that for two years unsuccessfully. guy: isn't there just a broader macro pattern here. people are switching from ordering goods to services. i assume delivery companies with suffer. if the consumers are ordering as much, by extension ups will not do as well. >> tha

talking to some of your workers with the teamsters' union, the teamsters just did a deal with ups andro-employee so whether our employees are represent or not represent, we want to be the place where the best people come to work, and about a third of our work force on the front line is unionized. we go through those negotiations and certainly bargain fairly with the union and, you know, feel like we're in a really good spot in all parts of our labor including those that are organized. ashley: how much has automation changed the business or even looking to the future with all sorts of talk about artificial intelligence? is that going to be a big part of your future? >> yeah. automation has certainly changed the game if you look over the course of a couple decades. you remember the time when there were two people in the back of a truck collecting garbage recycle, and now most of our routes are automated, and so we have a single operate who's not -- operator who's not getting out of the truck so much and that's good for certainly the employee can and their work environment. it also makes

and this is important to note that the teamsters have not ratified the new deal yet. how do you see this impacting eps for the next few quarters? >> it has been clear this was going to be a loud deal and late deal and win-win-win for labor and company and shareholders you will not hear anything from the pre-packaged script. they really do need to respect the process and let labor go through to get the deal ratified they don't want anything to destabilize that i don't think we will get that much insight into what the contract will cost what this ratified, i think the company will give us more insight to what the labor rate would be, in the end of august or beginning of september. we will not get that much detail right away as far as the cost of the labor deal we had to work earlier on this deal where the inflation being in the low 3% range. it is a little more expensive on the upside maybe $2 million or $3 million more in the first year of the contract with hefty first-year wage increases across the board. everybody will get a bump in the first year part-time wages wil
