we're out here at the alameda county fair which just kicked off yesterday. 's going to be going on for the next couple of weeks. a lot of stuff happening out here besides our amazing weather. in the 80s out here in the east bay. with me is my friend april mitchell. you've got our funnel cake. we've been eating it like all evening long. >> i can't wait to finish it. >> it's one of the things people expect about a fair but there's a lot happening here. >> 4-h and ffa is such a huge part of our fair, as you can see from these girls right here. we raise over $500,000 each year just for college programs for these kids. it's wonderful. >> that is so great. a big part of the fair is the kids and the 4-h showing how much hard work they can put into something. >> yes. >> so 4-h is here, the funnel cakes are here. top that. what's something else? >> we've got the -- we have the world's largest barbecue. it came in on a semi trailer. you've got to come and check it out, yeah. we're going to grill the world's largest hamburger on it too. we've got that, we've got mutton

what's cooking at the alameda county fair. good evening. dana king has the night off. i'm elizabeth cook. and i'm ken bastida. about a third of the 100,000 u-s troops in afghanistan right now, will soon be coming home.. that declaration from the president tonight, as he announced the beginning of the effort to wind down don knapp shows us [ no audio ] [ no audio ] >> end of the war in afghanistan ordered the withdrawal of 30,000 troops by the ends of next summer. 10,000 of them by the ends of this year. the drawdown equals the 30,000 troops be ordered to afghanistan for the surge of 2009. >> when i announced the surge at west point we refocused objectives and trained afghanistan to retrain their soldiers. >> it has cost $44 billion claiming the lives of 1500 service men and women and estimated 8000 afghan civilians. the president did thought say mission accomplished but said the united states was fulfilling its commitment. >> our mission will change from combat to support. by 2014 this process of transition will be complete. and the afghan people will be responsible fo

nothing like the alameda county fair out here in pleasanton. we're looking at temperatures that will be gradually dropping off throughout tonight with patchy fog building at the coastline. over the next 48 hours a region of high pressure slowly decreasing here offshore and by 7:00 a.m. we'll start in the mid 50s and we'll see that fog coming back and that's what will keep it cooler throughout the area. by 6:00 tomorrow, temperatures will be in the 70s. all right. as we look at our tomorrow forecast we're looking at mid 70s in the east bay and also, for the south bay, and then temperatures on our seven-day forecast, it will be staying in the low to mid 80s here as we head throughout the next seven days. remember, it's all about the alameda county fair out here in pleasanton where tickets range umm to about $10 from kids to adults. and it goes right into july so you definitely don't want to miss it. on your seven-day forecast, that fog, once again, lingers as we head throughout tuesday, wednesday and thursday of next week. and some people say, in

>> i'm here at the alameda county training facility. you just look at hills behind the facility to see what they're training for. getting ready for the fire season for the hot upcoming weekend will be upon us. we got a demonstration of dangerous combination of fireworks and human beings and they hope everyone is watching and listening. in the just fire is what they're worried about but the m-1,000 you just saw can blow up your finger or your hand. they're illegal at all time bus fire is the main concern. that's why the firefighters showed how easy it to start a grass fire using illegal fireworks. it does not mean once you get legal fireworks anything goes.

tonight the alameda city council will meet to review the incident and ask for details about the protocols that first responders cited. those are questions what could have been done by first responders to save a suicidal man who drowned in alameda. first responders are upset about 75 witnesses stood on shore as he lost consciousness and drowned. coastguard was hampered by shallow water and coastguard was delayed by another car. they say they followed policy by staying out of the water. new questions are being raised whether discontinuing the water rescue program in 2009 was meant to be temporary while the department underwent rescue recertification. >> i wanted to reassure the public we are taking steps to address this. >> reporter: and according to the alameda patch, alameda issued a press release it had contacted a number of agencies for assistance in the water rescue including oakland fire department, alameda county fire department and oakland and alameda county fire department both of whom that have equipment for shallow water rescue say they were never asked to provide assistance. the

take a look at the scene, may 30th on the alameda shoreline. what is wrong with this picture? nd firefighters are standing on the beach while a man goes into the water and overcome by the frigid waters and drowns. policy was clear, no firefighters were allowed to help because according to interim chief, water rescue training was dropped because of lack of money and attempting a water rescue certification would have left the city open for possible lawsuits. take a look at this memo from march of 2009 from division chief. it says, quote, we have been approved fund can to recertify instructors and train new swimmers, however until the training is completed, per osha requirements no members may be used as rescue swimmers. now our media partner contra costa times not only was that true in 2009 but right now, $20,000 is being spent to recertify firefighters to attempt water just. firefighters are now shifting their story a little bit saying the suicidal man was 6'3", weighing 300 pounds and possibly armed and dangerous. there is new policy in alameda, senior firefighter on the scene

the chickens belonged to the alameda point caw lab bra tiff. it is a nonprofit that allows transitional housing for about 500 people who were homeless including 300 children. the alameda police officers' association pledged to donate new chickens. >>> the head of san francisco's municipal transportation agency is leaving his joby it end of the month. ford will depart with two and a half years remaining on his contract and a $380,000 severance package c. the mta oversees muni and taxicabs along with parking and traffic operations. the departure comes after an outside arbitrator imposed a new contract on muni operators this week. muni workers recently rejected the deal. mayor ed leigh credits him with improving the on time performance. >>> a two-year-old is in the hospital tonight. his dangerous fall from the second story window in the east bay. >> and a major milestone for congresswoman gabrielle giffords who was so badly wounded in the shooting. >> and congressman anthony wiener's wife returns home tonight to more trouble involving her husband.
