he died during a race at the alameda county fair. tara moriarty live this morning in pleasanton where a news conference is scheduled for later this morning. tara. >> reporter: the horse racing community here grieving and a spokesperson from the alameda county fairgrounds saying their heartfelt sentiments go out to the family of jorge herrera. it happened just before 5:00. last race of the day. the crowd in shock when a jockey on a gray horse number eight fell from the horse and died. a witness says that he started strong but fell back and got too close to another horse and thrown off on the track. >> it seemed like he might have over corrected and he came across the nine horses. clipped heels with the nine horse and stumbled badly and the jockey flew over the horses head. >> reporter: officials say it appears herrera was centrallabled trampled. he was in mexico and finished first 55 times in his career. he raced in california, oregon, and washington starting in more than 1,000 races. no word yet on how the community here at the fairgr

a single car crash on island drive near the alameda municipal golf course. island drive is going to be shut down for a few more hours. you can see investigators on the scene. the car itself is hard to look at. just to be simple and honest. it's a four-door sedan. can't even make out what kind of car it is, the top sheered off. you can see the air bags did deploy. the saddest part, six teens under 16 years old, five of them 15 years old, and one 13-year-old were inside this car when it crashed. it collided with a tree. the driver, 15, is at highland hospital with life threatening injuries. this is according to police. the five passengers all taken to the hospital as well but they are expected to survive. the investigators out here, they are trying to determine if p drugs or alcohol played a part in this crash. again, that happened at 1:30 this morning. also we're learning from police that the owner of the car is said to be one of the parents of one of these passengers. that's the latest from here. marla tellez, "today in the bay." >> also new this morning, the

this was an emotional final day at the alameda county fair. that's because people took time to honor a jockey who was killed there last week. nbc bay area's jean is in pleasanton with more on how they chose to remember him today. >> reporter: diane, the last horse race of the county fair is about to begin. it has been an emotional day here at the track. earlier today, this morning dozens of people from the horse racing community and the fair gathered to remember jorge herera. he died thursday after being thrown off his horse during a race. he died from a head injury. the accident shocked the tight-knit racing community, reminding everyone how dangerous horse racing can be. herrera is remembered as a man as his word, someone who showed up for people who needed him. >> a lot of people tell you they're going to be there. but this young man was always there. he was a man of his word. he was dedicated to his craft. and it's a very tragic loss. >> reporter: the fair dedicated a race to herrera here on the last day of racing. flags are at half staff

neighbors heard the impact and called 911. alameda police told us there were two sisters in the car and the car belonged to their parents who had no idea that the car was even gone overnight. investigators are looking into whether alcohol was involved in this because they tell us they found beer in the trunk. but they say that may have been left in there by the parent and not used by the kids. either way, they say speed was a factor. it's unclear if the 15-year-old had a perm, but it wouldn't have mattered anyway. >> the tragic part of this is nobody in the vehicle was old enough to have a license and drive, so obviously our hearts and prayers go out to the families of all the people that were involved. >> reporter: that 15-year-old driver, as you mentioned, has life-threatening injuries. the others were also injured and hospitalized, but at least one of them has already been released this morning. investigators tell me they believe that only those in the front of the car actually had seat belts on. they also tell us that alcohol beve

we are told by the alameda police department there were six people inside that white car. all under the age of 18. the driver was trapped and it took a lot to get that driver out and to the hospital. all six people are at the hospital. all we know right now this happened shortly after 1:30. somebody heard the crash but as far as they know, no one actually saw the crash. they got out here they got all six people to the hospital. there were officers at the hospital determining the victims condition. we don't know anything more about them or really what led up to the single vehicle crash into a tree here on alameda drive. the sergeant told me they expect this roadway to be shut down in this one direction until 9:00 or 10:00 this morning. you can see it's very dark out here and that's what they are doing. they are waiting for daylight so they can get a better idea of what led up to the terrible crash. live in alameda claudine wong. >>> the information is now -- the investigation is now under way in the tragic shooting death of a toddler. the three-year-old was the son of a san

abc 7 news joins us from the alameda county court house with charges. >> this boy's parents were arrested along with the baby-sitters, parents are going to be released and not charged. the young woman who was charged in court she did not yet have an attorney. she to not enter a plea. outside her family came to her defense. while the boy's parents won't face charges, the baby-sitter of a 3-year-old oakland boy has been charged with felony child abuse. the baby-sitter, a 24-year-old nakia williams called 911 from this apartment monday morning saying they she found the boy alone and not responsive in the bathtub. the district attorney charged william was felony child abuse and corporal injury to a child. the boy suffered recent and past head trauma a laser yaited liver, numerous scars and cigarettes, lighter and other burns on the bod yeechl william relatives say she is not capable after bus. one sister did not want us to show her face on camera. >> my sister has never displayed those types of actions and never done anything like that. my sister loves. >> police located three other kids rela
