i am the president of the san francisco community fishing association, the first community fishing association on the west coast. we have eight members that are all local captains that support their families with small boat fishing. we use a hook and line here and we are a sustainable fleet. we have had a couple of pretty bad years here because of no salmon fishing up and down the coast of california. it has been very tough for infrastructure to stay in place we were in fort bragg this year fishing salmon. we're getting fuel from a truck on the dock and having to drag the hose over to fill up our votes. infrastructure is important to bring in all these fleets. the ice machine, fuel, facilities, all that makes or breaks a port. there was short salmon everywhere up and down the coast. we have not seen anything like that in 10 years. we are expecting a very robust salmon season next year. we had the largest crab season in california history last year. we do not think it will be as big this year, but we think it will be a pretty good season. the herring quota was almost doubled from last year, 1,5

i'm president of the bar association of san francisco. basf, as we note the bar association to be called, has had a long relationship with the public defenders office. it is crucially important for administration of justice. and so is san francisco conflicts panels where administration, which the bar association has provided in partnership with public defenders. so in san francisco when a public defender has a conflict of interest, criminal defendants and minors are represented by private attorneys from a panel administered by the bar association of san francisco. maintaining this independent body of attorneys is critically important as a well-run public defenders office. we are each other's complement. we are the sum of the parts that makes whole the criminal departments working so well in san francisco. in 2003 the superior court contracted with the bar association of san francisco indigent to have cost-saving oversight to the administration and billing associated with conflicts. so tron is the director of the courts administration and h

i have the support of the shares association, the police officers association, and >> welcome, everybody. to the 2011 justice summit by the book. i'm so excited to be here. you know, we've been doing these summits now for seven years, but this by far is the most exciting summit. i cannot wait to hear the panelists that we have today. we're going to be delving in to some of the most critical issues affecting the criminal justice system at this time. and we're going to talk about, what is justice and what it means. you know, plateo said, "i do not know what justice is, but i know what it is not." and that is very true when you think about it because it's something that we take for granted, that we believe in, that we hope for, but the reality is is that we don't understand and appreciate justice unless we are deprived of it. and in many cases the definition of justice is the correction of an injustice, and that's really the spisht that we're approaching today. we have three action-packed panels. our first panel celebrates the 50th anniversary of a novel that really defined american justice

the association has been in existence for a little over 20 years. what we focus on is eliminating the achievement gap, and we do that by developing fantastic latino leaders. we do that by the mentoring program. we have a summer institute every year, and we have conclave research to practice to look at ideas and affected practices that help us in our classrooms and at our schools to eliminate the achievement gap. i also want to thank each and everyone of you for being here. and i know you have a lot of passion, it is great to see you all here. but that is not enough. we need to have the confidence, the knowledge-base of what best practices really help our students to eliminate the achievement gap, and that is why we are here. i commend alas for putting this together. it has been our pleasure to help collaborate for this summit. thank you, and i will see you here in the next few days. enjoy it, learn, and have a lot of fun.
