i would like to thank julie tron from the bar association. the bar association has been our partners in terms of providing defense for poor people. in cases where the public defender is not able to provide representation, those cases are handled by the private bar and they are doing an incredible job. so thank you very much for that. i want to thank jose as a who is a public defender and here to celebrate with us. we are going to start today by showing a brief video explaining the gideon decisions >> take this empty lot. today you would never know it but history was made here. mostly all is gone and so are the people. the principle they left is still standing. it was almost as bad at life. >> it was a constitutional hero, but the cases that come to the court don't come from the winners in society. they come from the losers. clarence gideon was involved in the justice system since he was a kid. he had been getting in trouble. >> trouble seemed to find gideon. literally small change had gone miss ing from this cigarette machine, maybe $5 total.

the neighborhood has 'em /pwraeulsed this bar as its own. patrons have expressed an overwhelming show of support in response to this license transfer. we would like to ensure that we're able to provide the highest quality entertainment possible. we are the only /srepbl ewe of our kind in our neighborhood and we are the polar opposite of a nightclub. since the four of us assumed ownership we are performed extensive outreach to our community to /tkpwaeupbl their trust and support. we've held two meet and greet nights to give the community the opportunity to come in and introduce themselves and us to do the same. we like people to come in and voice their concerns about the transfer of this license and we've successfully rescinded 13 of them by explaining our commitment to providing the safest possible atmosphere to our street corner. also, the support of 30 neighboring businesses within two blocks of our bar. we have acquired a personal letter of support from the only student dormitory within 500 feet of our door at 761 post street and we've con

residents say the local bar is attracting the wrong crowd. the owner says he's trying to change the bar's old reputation. neighbors want the city to simply shut it down after a weekend stabbing. nbc bay area's kris sanchez j n joins us from the willow den. what happens next, chris? >> reporter: the stabbing happened about 11:00 on saturday night, about three hours after this neighborhood's popular dancing on the avenue festival a couple hours away. the owner said he knew he would be busy on saturday night and doubled his security staff to about 15 and still trouble found its way in. >> there's certainly lessons to be learned from this moving forward. >> reporter: the owner of san jose's willow den bar is answering criticism about a stabbing that happened saturday night. >> we found one victim. by entering the bar, we located the suspect and took him into custody. >> reporter: there were 300 to 400 final inside the bar and outside in the parking lot that was fenced in for a weekend event. >> this bar has been nothing but a problem for us to de

the mission area there is two bars. it's very livelily in the mission. the card is a small card. it's in front of one bar very close to one of the bars. about 1:00 the starts to get crowded. it should be noted there were three unlicensed, unregulated carts which the appellant had made the report to the police which were taking business from them. the appellants had gone through all the requirements set out by the city in order to get a cart with water, contained a certain temperature and had a refrigerator and they were licensed for this area. they had most of their business taken. one of the important things is when after june 1, they started getting more complaints. these complaints we believe were generated by some of the business owners in the area who didn't want a cart in front of their place selling food. it was impossible for the young guys to get the information from the dpw as to who was making these complaints. it's hear say. it's unvetted. anyone can file a complaint. they are small carts. they didn't have loud music playing, the bars were consistently letting in and o

the gist of it is a combination of the bar scene and the late nights from the bars and they are feeling that this food cart would exasperate already uncomfortable situation. >> okay. that's all. >> one last question. sorry. when in pass when a license has been revoked how typical or how common is it for both locations to be revoked? i know it's multiple locations, one permit. is it traditionally that you would take both locations away? >> actually this is the first mobile food permit that we have revoked because typically, when we have one identified situations that merchants are in violation, it's remedy to take appropriate action. we try very hard not to revoke a permit if at all possible. >> the concerning is that you gave them multiple chances to comply and they have not complied? >> that is correct. >> what about suspension, you suspended permits, correct? o you just go straight for it. when do you have a sort of a -- the appellant has requested a suspension as an alternative, has that the been contemplated? >> it was considered, but, again, this was a case where operation late at

the story. caught on camera, a small bar in the midwest turns into a scene out of the wild west. [ gun fire ] october 8th, 2009, a lively night at a bar in toledo, ohio. a surveillance video shows marquese robbins ordering some drinks from the bartender. the bartender sees him pull out a bag of marijuana. he calls the bouncer over to remove the customer. >> there are cameras up there. i am not going to lose my job over this bull [ bleep ]. get out. >> but robbins won't leave. he and the bouncer start to have words and a fight breaks out. 38-year-old lashon sawyer is the cook at the bar. the video shows sawyer walking back to the kitchen as patrons exit through the rear door. while he's there he says he makes a shocking discovery. >> as i was going over to close the back door, there was actually a gun on the floor. it stopped the door from closing all the way. >> sawyer feels he can't just leave the gun there so he says he picks it up. >> my intention was to take it to the bartender. that's who runs the place. >> meanwhile, a security camera at the bar's entrance shows customers running out after the

the back. he actually, we talked afterwards a couple months. he works in a bar. he drinks a lot less as a bartender than as a public defender. in some ways dawson's speech has missed the mark. most of the public defenders are not particularly interested in being vigilante soup heroes. they want back ups thechl they want to work in the existing framework to protect the clients rights and they want the time and resources to do their jobs right without having to reduce to heroics. they needed more time with their clients if they want to properly represent them. clients don't trust the system. a federal public defender in nevada for years. you can be the the best representation but the clients don't see it. clients are asking do i trust you enough to tell you the truth of what happened? i need that information so i can see for example is this a self defense case. there has to be enough time to create a relationship, is she said. that's where the the difference is between rich and poor. the rich because they are paying for their time will have as much time with their l

i live 65-and-a-half feet from the bar. when i look out the window i see the place and i say i need a drink and i need some friends, and i go over. we're ages 23 to 5 out in the audience. on tuesday you would have seen two senior women enjoying themselves before they went to dinner. this is a neighborhood spot. this is the only place that has not been a scene of any crime, any problems. they don't even have a television because they don't want to encourage loud noises. these guys are what we're looking for in this city -- young energetic people who care about doing business. you have 400 people for, you have 100 people against. i think in the city for projects we've seen to have three times more people supporting than against is really a record. the high crime corner is geary where all the late night residences are. this is a corner where three of the buildings are apartments and they are the lower level of the apartment building. they do everything that they said they have done, they have done consistently since they've liv

the potential suspects on that homicide. it does benefit us. there are issues of 4th amendment rights, i get that, but as bar owners we have dealt with the person that said i slipped and fell in your bar or the security mishandled me when i was being carried out. video footage will help address that and eliminate that. complaints, often if your security is doing the right thing. so you as a business owner has to make that decision and say how strongly do i believe in my customers right to privacy versus my businesses being viable and successful. i think there is an easy balance there and cameras will help. one other thing with regards to cameras, they are very inexpensive. for a thousand dollars you can get a decent camera. and make sure your lighting is good too. >> do you have cameras? >> yes. i installed cameras about 8 years ago. i originally did it because i didn't trust my employees. i ended up firing a lot of them because of what i found. but ironically that film didn't help me. i fired one bartender for being high and drunk. when he applied for unemployment insurance that video footage meant nothing and i still had to let him go. but we

coming up you will hear from a woman inside the bar when the chaos broke out and how she helped one of the gunshot victims when people were fleeing the bar. live in oakland i'm tara moriarty. >> we are also learning more about a triple shooting in oakland where a 17-year-old boy was killed. it happened just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon. a 60-year-old woman in a passing car and another teenager were injured. police have not made any arrests. police are investigating three separate shootings saturday night that happened an hour apart. a woman was shot around 9:00 p.m. around 65th avenue and east lawn street. an hour later two men were shot an 73rd avenue. police found a man who had been shot on 78th. >>> oakland police are scheduled to announce a new strategy to deal with dangerous side shows today. the announcement comes after gunfire early saturday morning that left a woman in critical condition and wounded two men. police who live near 106th avenue say side shows are a problem almost every weekend. police believe the victims of saturday shootings were spectators. >>> you will want
