we're seeing a lot of the same trends all over the bay area, including the south bay, where there werehuge populations of people who work in ch, making the money that should be able to afford them a house where you could say, raise a family, and a lot of people are coming to the decision, especially during the pandemic, it's not worth it, especially if our company will allow us to either work remotely from a place you can ski on your coffee break, you know, or work at one of the many offices for some of these largest companies around the world. if you can live in a place where you can have a bigger place, why wouldn't you do it? >> yeah, it gets hot every generation for people who come out here. it was the same in the end 90s and 2000s. 20 or 30 somethings came out here, made good money, and did a look to buy a house where they want to buy a house. not to see the market increase, i don't have that kind of money. i'm about here in 2000 and i would say, maybe 1/3 to 1/4 of the first friends i made in the decade of my 20s, still here. right? some of us are fortunate to find a house and of

you have to think about okay, in the bay area, it actually costs this much. so what are we seeing a lot of those parents spend most of the money on when it comes to raising the child? >> yeah, three major categories, housing, food and child care are the big ones. housing is just expensive. we have to put a roof over our kids' heads and over time, those costs are increasing. they're increasing more today than ever. personally, i just looked up food, for example, snacks and baby food, two things that are on my mind because i have a 7-month-old daughter and a 3-year-old daughter, those are up 16% over the 12-month period. we're seeing drastic increases in food costs and child care. this is the big topic, at least every birthday party i go to for my kids, what are we paying for child care? i just did my personal numbers here, and just one year increase in child care is up about 11% in the 12-month period. we're seeing major increases and that's the thing. what we're seeing is major increases in child-specific items that are increasing much faster than the broad ba

and the north bay. you want to make sure that you're reduing your outdoor activity and drinking lots of water and there also will be the increased risk of heat-related illness for people working outside, trying to workout in the middle of the day. make sure you plan your activities around the heat. right now in san francisco it's in the upper 50s. it's a clear start. we know that without the fog near the coast, those inland valleys tend to heat up so we're still looking at some upper 70s and mild weather in san francisco but the farther you make your way inland, the hotter it will be, reaching up to 105 degrees in the tri-valley as well as fairfield. we are still looking at some hot weather ahead and we'll talk more about that coming up. mike, you've been watching what's going on here around parts of the north bay. >> that's right, kari. this is unusual slowing. it's also unusually far north for what we typically cover but a lot of slowing, this crash over on the shoulder for west 80 is now a deadly cras

"today in the bay's" ginger conejero saab is live with the shortage across the bay area. ginger? eporter: that's right, kris and marcus. california schools were struggling to fill all open teaching positions before the pandemic even started. more than two years later the struggle isn't easier but the consequences are felt more so. 600,000 teachers decided to quit between the start of 2020 and february of this year. some retired early and others decided to leave the profession all together. bay area teachers tell us the pandemic has taken a physical and emotional toll on many and making it in the bay is difficult if not impossible for many teachers. the result? teachers leaving the profession. in exit surveys, teachers cite the challenges of the pandemic, distance learning and the difficulty of students returning with greater mental health needs. now because there were fewer one in five california who was underprepared, not yet credentialed or out of their fields or ineffective. and here's more proof of that issue, san francisco unified is struggling to fill some 100 vacant positio

there's the bay area. sa, san jose, the tri valley, then you have the sliver of clearness. it looks ws wes weird. the wind is oriented in such a way that as the onshore flow comes over the hills in the peninsula in the city, it has to go up and sinks down on the other side as it comes around. when you sink like that, you typically dry it out, which is why you have the narrow ribbon, the sliver of opening. the futurecast sees it there. but we can take this all and melt it back. everybody is going to get sunshine today by the time we get to the late morning and early afternoon. if it's gray, you know the drill, hang in there. won't be around much longer. 60s the current numbers for just about everybody. interesting pattern on how we're staying so cool. the headline in the forecast, the mid 80s for inland locations. how are we doing this? you can see it when you look at the big picture. we have to go a little wide here. you don't see it on regular satellite. when we put on the water vapor, you'll see it there.
