>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at all. >> tonight at 5, powerful winds uprooting this massive tree and knocking down things around in mill valley. today is the national weather service has issued a high wind warning for the entire bay area and that certainly wasn't the only tree that came down today. it is rough out there. crews responding to downed trees really all around the bay area. good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight. i'm grant lotus and i'm vicki liviakis. we're tracking the conditions tonight as widespread damage is seen all across the region. we're monitoring power outages. those downed trees that graham was talking about and >> road closures due to all the damage. a lot rain out there, but just ferocious winds in san francisco. in fact, there's a shelter in place in order right now after a couple windows broke on a high-rise. this is video here and yet glass fell from a famous building there on kearney, a california street. and that is where we find kron 4

socal creek also around the bay area. d see some flooding as well along some of our smaller creeks and streams here, too. tomorrow morning about 02:00am. that's when the storm really starts to come in. coming in the wave after wave of heavy rainfall to 4 o'clock in the morning. and even further than that strong gusty winds to go along with that, too, right there before 06:00am just very stormy in the north bay and all around the bay area. those gusty winds will be howling. some gusts 50 to 70 miles per hour. turning the showers behind that, though, and then more widely scattered showers in the afternoon. another band comes in by tomorrow evening. but i think overall things will begin to settle down a bit after that. that said, we've got some stormy weather on the way. a little bit of a break on wednesday and thursday, slight chance of more rain as we get into next sunday. >> and now kron 4 sports. >> the rich are getting richer on day one of free agency. the niners have agreed to terms of free agent defensive tackle john h

the south bay and the east bay. around 6260,000 customers without power is just an enormous number in the bay area. the majority of folks. and we'll zoom in here in the south bay where close to 130,000 customers in the south bay, a loner in the dark tonight here, the areas hardest hit. this is a southwest san jose campbell cupertino, sunnyvale, south toes. you know, the right here means at least 5,000 customers are without at the orange is the second worst. that's 500 to 5,000 customers. so you can see the areas that are real trouble spots next. biggest problem areas would be the east bay where you have close to 70,000 customers without power. not too good in the pleasanton area, but even worse here. just east of pleasant hill, south of concord. you know, cejka so many people live in these densely populated neighborhoods and then there's this, the berkeley hills, the hills above albany, elsa you know, just crushed tonight by those outages and after the east bay, the peninsula is the next biggest problem area. more than 50,000 customers using flashligts tonight on the peninsula of millbrae here, san

and this will impact the north bay as well as the core of the bay area. again, that's mid-afternoon tomorrow. conditions calm down again after that. but we'll see a resurgence of moisture on into sunday morning and some really heavy rainfall. the start the day on sunday saturday morning. a good day for errands sunday morning. a good day for making breakfast at home. as for our rainfall totals as we make our way through the weekend, we've got another inch of rain expected for most areas and we'll have even more on top of that into early next week. the sierra nevada under winter storm warnings above 7,000 feet. and it still is piling up in feet between last night's system and what we see monday of next week. we have in some spots an additional 10 feet of snowfall about to be coming down in the sierra. as for lake level at lake tahoe, it's a little too warm for that snow. it's kind of rain. snow mix in a slushy mess right around there. bay area has her own flood concerns with flood advisories extended through sunday. as we do see continued active weather this

tonight here in the bay area >> utility released the latest power outage. number, there are more than 32 1000 customers across the bay area that don't have power. we're taking a look at the power outage map life on pg e's website. the orange indicates between 500 and 5,000 customers don't have power. that's a largely in the menlo park area. loss saratoga. >> and in the south bay, in fact, that. area has been hardest hit pg and e says that there are more than 2000 customers in that area who do not have power tonight. kron four's haaziq madyun talked with people who live and work in saratoga who say they're struggling to stay warm without electricity. >> there's no heaters, no hot water, not even cooking. so you make it. barely surviving. >> that is the situation for some residents here on peach hill road and saratoga. that is where this pg and e crew is replacing a high voltage power pole that was damaged during wednesday's store. >> we're on day 3 of restoration efforts here in sumter county pg and e spokesperson myra tostado talks about the challenges insta

may be the heaviest around the bay area. by the time we had it up to go along with that, we're seeing some very gusty winds, daly city now in this last hour, just recording a gust of 43 miles an hour, 40 mile an hour winds in the richmond district right now. 36 at sfo. wow. check out pacific. a 53 mile an hour gusts there over the mountain tops 57 mile an hour things are really starting to ramp up as far as the winds are concerned and that will likely bring down some trees and some power lines throughout the night. almost inevitably you're going to see some of that happening. a gusty winds even inside the bay now. but you can see that especially over the mountain tops get over the oakland hills. you can see moraga looking for some 36 mile an hour gust 40 in the lafayette. so some very gusty winds developing outside now to go along with that storm system. and that makes even more dangerous likely lose some power in spots tonight to keep flashlights handy. a wind advisory, of course, posted for the entire bay area for those gus

we begin with the rain in the bay area. yes. you already know this if you've looked outside the window. there is more of it. this is what it looked like this morning driving on the bay bridge. you can see the windshield wipers in full effectful this is what it looked like on the peninsula. really started to accumulate in daly city and san ramon, people with umbrellas, wet roads, wet pavement, you know the drill. be careful when you're driving. and this was the season earlier this morning in san francisco. not a downpour but enough rain to make you wet and cold. you've been tracking the latest for us. what can we expect this evening? >> you mentioned the cold. we have freeze warnings in place and frost advisories heading into tonight and tomorrow. so this is going into this evening. you can see how beautiful it looks. we've got the cloud cover. this will be the tail end of it. we're seeing the rain push through. so this is satellite radar. you can see this and plenty of sierra snow. i want to zoom this in using our doppler storm r

things cleared out in the bay area. still some lingering snow showers up toward shasta, but off the coastline. we've got the atmospheric river event setting up the pineapple express, getting its name because or originating down near the hawaiian islands. all that subtropical moisture getting in trained by a low that's going to be dropping down in the gulf of alaska. all of a sudden that takes aim at the bay area. we're talking about tremendous amounts of rain. morning rain tomorrow. i think that the time has moved up a bit. heavy rain, gusty winds as we head toward the mi

more rain falling all across the bay area, the storm that was now moving out of the bay see a very gray sky above the oakland estuary in the eight o'clock hour today, mark, we had rain on these windows. now i see trees blowing around behind them. yeah, that's right, so we're still going hold on to some scattered showers this afternoon. but yeah, the wind really ramping up and that will cause some problems. unfortunately talked about that tree down already impacting the roadways. and as we take a look at the radar imagery right now, this was the radar earlier today, of course with the morning commute things those out over the past few frames, things at least starting to settle down a bit in terms of the heavy rain over the bay area, but those numbers really adding up santa rosa san rafael over two inches of rainfall. felt in approaching two inches. oakland almost an inch redwood city about a half an inch in san jose over a quarter of an inch. now the high wind warning continues and you can see some of the strong winds out toward mountie albums. 72 miles an hour sfo within the past hour,

also some wind damage out there stretching all across the bay area from the north bay. well, to our north, we have some wind damage there. great yet some damage in that area. then you work your way down the coastline into san francisco. some trees down some power lines there in the half. moon bay, we have some issues there. hillsborough trees down, blocking the roadways there. and this is how was the most of it a difficult day for a police departments and fire departments to handle all the calls with all these trees coming down all around the bay area. do a little strong, gusty winds. but the good news is those winds begin to back off. now, you can see just the last few hours here, those winds begin to calm down a little bit so that i think that trend will continue throughout the night tonight. those winds will continue to fall back a bit. the storm system, though, not done just yet. it is taking aim now not at the bay area. now the atmospheric river sliding into southern california. so they're going to see more heavy rain coming for them. maybe even some more flooding f

dan: so much damage all over the bay area. in the east bay, caltrans says it could take weeks to complete a fix of the storm damaged lanes of eastbound 80. all the rain undermined a section of the retaining wall next to the freeway. the erosion has also caused the crack on the freeway, forcing the closure of two lanes, leaving only two lanes open to traffic. >> the first chance we get at son, we will re-stripe the lanes on the mainline and get another lame back. we will push into the median and that will help relieve some of the congestion. dan: the temporary fix would likely involve the installation of piles to prop up the true lanes. eventually, they may have to be rebuilt. they are trying to assess that now. a tree is to blame for this to rail meant of an amtrak train in contra costa county. the train to railed about 3:25, a half mile east of port costa. no one on board was hurt. all were taken to the martinez station. the derailment is leading to major delays on capital cord or surface between the bay area and sacramento. a

the east bay, and primarily in the south bay. but we are seeing at all throughout the service territory and throughout the bay area, the nine counties. are meteorology team has been tracking this well in advance -- our meteorology team has been tracking this will in advance. we were able to make sure that we brought crews in from other areas that would be lesser hit. they have come to the bay area to provide support. we are just working around the clock to make sure that our customers are safely restored. but our first priority right now really is making sure that our communities are safe. so we are going out to areas that may have downed power lines due to vegetation, trees coming down into poles, and making sure that areas are safe for the communities. kristen: let's pull that map back up. i want to focus on the areas i see a lot of outages, in the office park area, facebook has got an office there. in san jose, also a lot of companies. can you talk about what kind of companies and businesses, or residential are being impacted and to what extent they are getting their power backup? >> with the outage numbers this high, it is true

for the southern half of the bay area. imilar range but in the santa cruz mountains, four inches of rain indicated by this model. they could easily pick up five inches of rain and it could lead to a flooding threat. winds picking up along the coast by middle to late afternoon. 30-40, even 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts spreading farther inland tomorrow evening continuing into tomorrow night. it brings in the possibility of more tree damage, more power outages, be prepared for all of it. not done with the rainy pattern. lingers showers saturday and sunday. another weaker atmospheric river. it will head our way monday and tuesday of next week. adding up all of the rain over the next seven-days this is the estimate from the weather prediction center. three to five inches of rain. higher spots, north bay mountains, santa cruz mountains looking at 10 inches of rain. that is just a ton of water on top of what we picked up this far this winter. before the rain arrives, upper 30s, warming up to middle 50s. the system will drag some wa

but let's zoom in on the bay area and see what's going on in the north bay. scattered outages. most of them relatively small, fewer than 50 customers in these green areas. the yellow signifies up to 500 customers don't have power, but even then not a lot of yellow on this map, even in the east bay, in the city on the peninsula. but then he head towards the south bay. here's our biggest problem in the bay area. and this is in the los altos hills area. this is up to 5,000 customers who do not have power. this is both sides of interstate 2.80, off of moody road in los altos hills. so that's the biggest problem in the immediate bay area. but the biggest problem in northern california is in one of the prettiest spots on earth. we're talking about carmel, pebble beach in monterey. look at this. most of that area around 17 mile drive is in the dark tonight. monterey, large portions of that are dark carmel, carmel beach. the power's out. carmel valley road heading up into the valley. more outages. so that area really hit hard right now by the storms. there are crews coming in from the w

the east bay, as well as the south bay. this is going to be clearing for the afternoon. we're preparing for this. all of the clouds, the arealow pressure, and the high amount of moisture that's going to be pumped in from hawaii straight into the bay area. we call that an atmospheric river. this quick morning shower, once again, and then we have an aerial flood watch that's been put up for the entire bay area as we're preparing for 3 to 7 inches of rainfall. this will increase the threat of landslides and mudslides, as well as high winds kicking up as the storm system arrives, 20 to 50 miles per hour winds, could cause power outages, down some trees. you do want to make sure you're starting to prepare for the potential of not having power for a while. now, we're also going to see sierra snowmelt, about 4,000 feet in elevation and below, and there could be up to 5 feet of snow in some higher elevations. so once again, the rain we're seeing now will be clearing out and that will be the time to clear the storm drains, make sure everything around the house is ready for a lot of rain we'll see coming in tomorrow afternoon. it con

as far as rainfall goes across the entire bay area. if you're watching right now, you've got rain falling out of the central valley, the north coast, the central coast, and then above 6500 feet in the sear snowfall up there where we're at in san francisco right now, showers are coming down. we are actually yet to even see that u.s. to rainfall that has been pushed in just yet. there's all your cloud cover sitting offshore and we do have some bands of heavier rain that are arriving in the bay as we speak. most of our rainfall today is going to be concentrated bay area southward down into the central coast. so this is going to be another hit and a heavy hit of rainfall on the central coast, an area that is already experiencing some flooding along both of the haro river as well as the salinas river. now where we're sitting on radar, you can see this heavy line of rain right here that sits just west of marine county right now. news just now picking things up in san francisco in right across the bay lot more energy offshore. that is yet to c

rain has arrived back in the bay area. we're seeing heavy rain and strong winds as this latest powerful storm moves in from the pacific. it's what's known as an atmospheric river term that we have come to be very familiar with here in the bay area over the last few months, it's loaded with moisture, and this system is much different than the colder winter storms. that we're used to this time of year. joining us now to talk more about all of this is meteorologist mark tamayo with more on what we can expect with this particular storm system. we keep sort of throwing around this term atmospheric river. what? what makes an atmospheric river unique and how is it different than the other storm systems? we usually get this time of year. we want to differentiate this because i think some people think we just you know, casually throughout the term atmospheric river just called to make a storm or interesting, right? but a storm . typically, we're talking about a cold front right moves in from the north produces rain moved to the sout

looking at the total rainfall for the bay area, the north bay up to 2 1/2 inches on a widespread basis even more. this indicates three inches for santa rosa, through 10:00 a.m. on saturday. tomorrow afternoon it will be light off and on showers, so this will fall from 24 hours late tomorrow morning through midday on friday. for the servant half of the bay area up to 2 1/2 inches on a widespread basis with higher amounts in the santa cruz mountains where the rain is lasting longer and the atmosphere will squeeze out moisture. lingering shower chances through the weekend into next week with monday and tuesday associated with another atmospheric river looks to be headed this way. adding up all the rain chances and we talk about 3 to 5 inches total widespread across the bay area with higher spots picking 5 to 7 inches and a little bull's-eye of 10 inches of accumulation for parts of the santa cruz mountains. all of that is still in the future. right now, a little time to check the gutters and the drains, temperatures in the low to mid 50s. another chilly day with low temperatures in the 30

showers over the north bay in the past hour or two, we will see more of those this evening, but more widespread rain will develop late evening and overnight. that will move across the bay areaearly hours of wednesday morning. we will probably have to contend with at least leftover puddles from the morning commute on wednesday, but the bulk of the rain will be gone by 9:00 or 10:00. we see sunshine the rest of the day. it will still be cold, but dry. wednesday, went to that, the first half of thursday, and then here comes the moisture, hitting the coast thursday, with the wind picking up intensely thursday afternoon. by late afternoon, heavy rain will be here, and will continue through the evening, thursday night, into early friday morning. further into friday, the showers look like they will become intermittent. that part is still up in the year, we will have to watch friday for continuing flood threat, but either way, it is more moisture on top of already saturated soil. tonight's ring, not a whole lot, less than a quarter inch most places, some place in less than a 10th. other places, we will see quite a lot more adding up as the atmospheric river arrives. anywhere from t

we'll take you south of the bay area where hundreds are underwater this morning. this is "today in the bay," streaming live on roku, xumo, and online. >>> good tuesday morning to you. i'm gia vang. laura garcia is off. >> i'm marcus washington. mike, i know you've got an issue this morning. we've got to talk about the rain already here. so technically is the atmospheric river already here? >> it is, we're just seeing the beginning. the heaviest of the rain is still just offshore. but it will push through. i do have a bit of good news. it looks like the system will move out quickly, which is great when it comes to atmospheric rivers because we don't want to see it sitting over one area for an extended period of time. now, if i zoom this in using our mobile dob ler stormranger, you can see some of the heavier cells moving into san francisco. everywhere else, widespread light rain, so about 4:39, redwood city, you can see it starting to move in through the south bay. the timing looks similar to yesterday as far as when we'll see the heavy rain. we saw it ramping up ar

but it's had a higher impact around the bay area. here's the reason why. on the radar loop you can see everything swirling around. this is the center of the storm system basically right over san francisco on the northern end of the bay. the whole system has consolidated itself into one central area of low pressure. that's what we find at the center of the storm systems. earlier today, though, that was not the case. as the system evolved, the interaction, the different areas of low pressure was part of why the season changedite trajectory a little bit. it's named the fujiwara effect. about noon, the bursts of winds were heading to santa cruz county before the severe thunderstorm warning was issued. two different areas of low pressure, with my finger in the l there. they interact with each other and they actually rotate around a central point. interaction of these, the one pulling on this other area of low pressure is what dragged it back up to the north towards basically the heart of the bay area. so the fact this spun out another little mini center, seconda

but all around the bay area. >> we've been seeing similar things incredibly strong, gusty winds, even a place. you don't expect to see him inside the bay trees coming down in many parts of the bay area, almost too numerous to count outside. and we continue to see those winds out there, even though it started to back off a little bit. those winds still strong enough to bring some more trees down. you can see some pockets of some very strong gusty winds to go along with that. so it's going to be a long night ahead. these winds will start to decrease as we head throughout the night tonight. but still, we could see some damage out there. and we've already seen numerous places being reporting. a lot of damage. lot of trees coming down all around the area. as you can see, the little bubbles there. those are showing the different wind damage around the bay area. if i click on a couple of these petaluma tree down blocking the roadway, there you get of the peninsula highlands, you get san mateo, you get some trees down there long. 92 closing part of that as well. further south of los south, th

the gustiest winds are right over the bay area. but the difference is this storm system isn't quite as strong. i don't think that it will be as high of an impact especially the number of power outages that will be possible. there will be some, but we will stay below the hundreds of thousands that we had last week. showers still likely on wednesday. a look at futurecast with the rain spreading in before the sun even comes up tomorrow morning. so it will be a soggy morning commute. the gusty winds are going to kick in and for most of rush hour as well. some 20 to 30 miles an hour gust and some of the strongest gusts, more on that in a second. but the heaviest rain isn't going to last all day. largely it lifts off to the north and it should give us a bit of a break by late morning. still off and on showers will be possible the rest of the day and the strong storms will have some heavy downpours, but they won't linger in any one spot to cause any significant additional flooding threat. if we're going to get flooding, it will be a flood

tonight you see the forecast starting out some showers tomorrow morning th you pummeled the bay area. all the colors lighting up in the yellow and the orange, heavy rainfall moving throughout the bay area as we head towards 3 o'clock in the afternoon. and then continuing getting very heavy. i think in the north bay, you see the areas, they're orange, even read as we're going to see some intense rainfall. then overnight tomorrow night, going to see a little bit of a shift as we watch some of that moisture moving further south into the santa cruz mountains. but no matter how you slice and everybody around the bay area's going to see a lot of rain and flooding is going to be real issue tomorrow. all right. thank you, lawrence. in the east bay residents in danville are getting ready for potential flooding across four's amanda hari is live in danvilleotonight. so what are you hearing people say about the storm season. amanda? >> they are relieved that these storms aren't expected to be as bad as the ones we saw earlier this year. but they say it still doesn't hurt to prepare for the worst.
