it was the black panther party. so i joined the black panther party. cal clinic, breakfast program, educational program, committed to controlled does committed to control of the police, etc. during that period, the fbi with the cointelpro program, decided to destroy the black panther party. within a year and a half, it destroyed about 25 of our 37 state chapters. rennie leadership out of the country, the primary leadership, ed the map were assassinated them. and locked up the secondary leadership or force them to flee the country. i was part of the secondary leadership. i ended up getting locked up illegally as a result of a shooting incident between panthers and police. police got killed. one that wounded. other ones engaged in a shootout . a couple of days later, i was put in with two other panthers that have been locked up in the job, anden from a tried, convicted, found guilty, and spent 12 years in prison before they made the determination that we had all been tried illegally in the state of maryland according to the law. but it took another 32 yea

the black power movement and feminism. here we see the raised fist of black power, recast as a gay liberation emblem. and the gay liberation front very often marched in solidarity with groups like the black panther party and saw themselves as part -- as an integral part of a larger movement of oppressed minorities seeking to overthrow what they saw as a destructive social order. following black power's assertion that black is beautiful, the gay liberation front increasingly insisted that gay is good. so they are adopting the same kind of rhetoric, black power says "black is beautiful," gay power and the gay liberation front says that "gay is good." and they began to think of themselves as a revolutionary group that sought gay and sexual liberation more generally. we can see sort of on the right in this image from new york university and student activism there that gay power is being linked exclusively to black power -- to women power, to student power, all power to the people. right? it is thought of as part of this kind of broad movement of social groups who are not endeavoring just to get rights for gay men and lesbians, but are endeavoring to transform american society more broadly. carla jay

homosexual revolution of 1969, which he said would be a chance for a gay men and lesbians to join the black panthers and other radical groups to come out in large numbers and challenge the broader social order. nor was it the first time that gay men and lesbians fought back against the police and perceived harassment. we know of at least two other times that this happened on the west coast. in 1959 in los angeles historians tell us that drag queens and street hustlers that hung out at cooper's doughnuts and were frequently harassed by los angeles police department fought back after police arrested 3 people, helping them pelting them with donuts and coffee cups. in august of 1966 at san francisco's, cafeteria, when the management called the san francisco police to crack down on what they perceived to be behaving transgender individuals in the cafeteria, that the transgender individuals fought back when police arrived to arrest them as well. and yet, even before those events we had other street protests against discrimination against lesbians and gay men. we have talked before about the emergence of w

what's happening now is that we see oakland, a town which 50 years ago produced a group called the black pantherarty for self-defense and is known, i think, for its working class, vibe and is now the fifth most expensive rental market in the country. since 1990, antioch is a town in the delta and oakleaf population same thing across the way has grown by more than a thousand% and 2500% in terms of black population, so what we have seen is the last decade, this term is to fall-- small. it centers the gentry that's moving into the city. what happens to all of those who are disappeared? who are displaced? they have to move somewhere and so they moved to places like stanford, florida outside of orlando. they moved to summers like ferguson, missouri outside st. louis answered gentrification is part of a larger problem, which is resegregation and we can even talk about the culture, with happy in the culture. let's talk about cultural equity. the field of culture, a popular culture as well as a place where we have been able to uphold these images of diversity, but it's where we can also fledge diversity
