and that's not a real good note to begin the school board on. let's hope the economy gets back on track. in fact, put it in its proper perspective for you, there's 143 school districts right now in california that have a negative or qualified fiscal certification which means they're officially named as in danger of not meeting their financial obligations. thankfully, knock on wood, we're not one of them. we've been pretty tight with our budgets but i think at the end, that's how we're able to rehire all those folks who got pink slips because we have been very good stewards. i want to commend the board for passing some tough budgets but keeping us there so we're not in that list. also, a big reminder to everybody, the t-dap, the whooping cough is a big issue. last year, the state passed a bill that requires all seventh through 12th graders, they have to show proof that they have their booster for this. recently, the legislature agreed to extend that for 30 days from the period that, you know, the law was passed. so the new deadline is september 14

he informed us that the board will be having a retreat this weekend to define the priorities for the school year. we are eager to learn what you decide to focus on. we know as we set the priorities and goals for next year, -- our next meeting will be held on tuesday, september 28. we hope to hear about your priorities than. as part of your process to decide our priority process, we look for data in the new unified school district as far as achievements on new tests. we have improved from 4500 community members that hart participated in surveys and forearms over the past five years. we have to consider the resources that are needed to work on all issues. this is a small group of parents and volunteers. several issues that we have been working on in the past that are really important to parents that we will be continuing to work on it is monitoring the implementation of the parent engagement plan to make sure that there are a time lines, deadlines, accountability measures for meetings at a district level. the second, advocating to make sure that the districts set high levels and holds

thank you. >> good afternoon, president chiu and the board of supervisors. i'm the sponsor of the hill support group. my condolences also go out to mrs. westbrook who was definitely a trooper in the community who was an inspiration to me as well as mayor rogers and others who have gone on and brother leroy from the tenderloin community. i'm speaking on behalf of parents who have lost children to senseless gun violence. we heard two people lost their lives because of the pedestrian situation here in san francisco, but even greater so, we're at 37 homicides. we're at 37 homicides and it's not even september is not even over yet. 36 homicides versus two people that were struck by muni vehicles. that are 37 families that we're dealing with right now in the healing circle that are suffering from post-traumatic stress. a young man who was just shot recently as i shared with supervisor avalos, shot several times, we're dealing with that family also. i would like the board to really look at the situation of violence in our community. it's on the increase. homicides a

adachi has to appeal to the board of supervisors. i do not believe he will have the support. >> [inaudible] school construction bonds. do you worry about asian communities may not approve it -- thinking together -- two things? >> i have not had a chance to review the school bond proposal. there are several government structures, so they can place things on the bonds without our authority. i will say, with a lot of bands, the asian community has always been concerned about the quality of schools. you talk to any asian family in general, they hope that schools improve because it is their kids getting into it -- education. if they believe the school board will increase the opportunity for their kids to have a better education, there is no doubt they will vote in favor of it. but if they believe the school bond will not do that, that they would be the first ones to say no. that is the way i think i. the school district will have that obligation to convince them that this is good for them. we have challenges in our school district, as you

also at the full board this week, we had a couple of department-initiated ordinances'. the first was a standard for bird safe buildings. you approve the policy document and recommend approval of an ordinance that would implement the document. last week at committee, we made to modifications to it. first, they amended so it would specifically apply to city-owned properties and second, the amended controls on wind generation. they removed a prohibition on wind generation urban bird habitat and said, required any wind generator be monitored going into the future per existing regulations. last week, supervisor mar signed on as a sponsor and davidchiu signed on as a co-sponsor and it was an ant -- unanimously approved on first reading. commissioners, you heard these ordnances on june 23rd which would amend the says zoning map, planning code, but these speak to improve code readability of the board approved on first reading. there were no new introductions this week and the zoning administrator asked me to give you an update on the board of appeals. there was one item this wee
