the city. not south buffalo. we still don't the ability to send crews into south buffalo to help with that kind of work. just a correction on the amount of vehicles that have been towed, regular tows to dart street, mini tows, it's approximately 100 vehicles that have been towed. we talked about the fact that it's very difficult to plow snow in south buffalo, very few places to put it at this point so it's not a plowing operation it's a hauling and removal operation last night there were about 130 truckloads that were removed. now we have more than doubled that. more than 230 truckloads of snow removed from south buffalo. over 5,000 tons of snow that have been removed from south buffalo. i want to just notify you as you are well aware, governor cuomo will be in this afternoon. the governor has offered assistance to the city of buffalo through the various departments of the state, through the national guard, we are accepting whatever assistance we can get, many of the snowplows that we are utilizing are coming from

are you ready up there towards the buffalo area? , they have seen it a little earlier, and so have we. we have been on the cold side over the last week or so, and looks like that cold air is going to last right through early next week into and around the thanksgiving time period. but what about the rest of the winter? well, here's our first thought two words. cold a those were the two words that crippled our region from january to march last winter. it was a winter that seemed as if it would never end. the big question is, will this year be as bad as last year? the answer, i think it may just be worse. last winter was cold, although it didn't start off that way. the cold set in january, and we are talking arctic cold. that cold lasted all the way through march, and so did the snow. on average, d.c. gets about 15 inches a year, but last year we raked up over 30 inches. while areas to the west like dulles saw over 50 inches and a bit farther west, an incredible nearly 80 inches of snow. so what am i expecting this year? well, once agai

after the buffalo went away, then what? where do the people have to go? they were able to sustain themselves in her own communities. -- they were not able to sustain themselves in their own communities. there were no resources for them. that means working on the new cattle ranches that were developing at that point, and some did that. many along the highlands of montana, all the way to the north dakota border. many of the small towns and enclave populations of little shell tribe people to this day got work on local ranches or agricultural work, but there were a lot of folks who were not able to find network. there were only so many kinds of jobs like that. they were still living in a band environment -- and environment. the cohesiveness of those family relationships, they knew nothing else. they had to disperse because large populations cannot live together. there were no resources for that. the family bands would go off to different areas and they would live on the outskirts of these newly forming anglo american communities. they would pitch their lodges

. >>> we turn now to theed where the mayor of buffalo, new york -- now to the united states where the mayor of buffalo, new york, says the snowfall is heavier than anything they've seen in 40 years. you can see the video and check images on social media. it's quite stunning what people are dealing with. buffalo is used to very white winters, but a spokesman says the equivalent of a year's worth of snow has come down in just three days. some places have seen more than 60 inch of the white stuff. there's nor come as cnn's martin savidge reports. >> reporter: south buffalo continues to be pummelled lie lake-effect snow. it's been that way now for over a day and a half. how much snow depends on where you are. to the north of the city of buffalo, it's just a few inches. to the south of buffalo, it is measured by feet. and in some cases, quickly approaching six feet. that's the snowfall. add to that the snowdrifts which have exceeded ten feet in some areas. there is so much snow, the city literally doesn't know when to do with it because the plows won't work. it is falling too fast. in some

. ♪ john: look at the buffalo roam. son are a great example of tragedy. 30 million of them once roamed in america. that's because no one knows them or rather everyone knows them. indians and the white settlers kept haunting them until there were nearly extinct. the buffalo herd went from 30 million to 1,000. now they have made a comeback, because now people own them. here to help explain what happened. what happens? >> well, property rights were established over the very few remaining by some of left. when they got down to about 1,000 there were some cattle ranchers have roger been a real enough to figure out that the bison were worth more alive than dead at that point. so they went out to the great plains and gathered the remnants of what was left, 10-15 bison and grew them into the herds that today have made -- led to the comeback. john: they protected them for their own profit. >> they found a way to make them pay. the market, for them, was me. they sold bison to circuses, zoos, and public preserves. john: before that

. >> reporter: this powerful storm has paralyzed parts of the buffalo area. immobilizing entire communities. people trapped in cars, trucks and their homes. the relentless arctic air dangerous for anyone who has to be outside. dumping almost six feet in some parts. looking down at the extreme conditions, a whiteout, backyards buried, homes under huge drifts. >> from the air, you get a sense of the patch work. some areas barely got a dusting. other neighborhoods appear to be just buried. astonishing, even by buffalo standards. >> i've never seen anything like this. i'm 36. been in buffalo for good storms. this is by far the worst. >> reporter: 100 people stranded on roads. trucker mick brennan was on his way from massachusetts to ohio when his semi got stranded in the snow for more than 40 hours. >> we use a bunk heater we have inside the truck to keep warm. every now and then we have to start at the end to keep it warm, keep it from freezing up. >> reporter: police had to use snowmobiles to help when a fire truck got stuck. the national guard arrived and hundr

i have never seen snow like this. >> nearly six feet of snow is covering the buffalo area. inside and out. >> my wife has cerebral palsy, i'm trying to get to her. >> the latest blast of winter weather coming in with a bang. >> thunder, snow and lightning at times near whiteout conditions, totals could see up to 3 more feet piling up. >> i am actually surprised that it is not worse. this is probably the most snowfall in history. >> new york's governor says local crews with the help of the national guard is making progress in clearing the highways but there is growing concern over collapsing rooftops and authorities evacuated dozens of people from mobile homes and the weight of the snow too much to bear and it has left some without heat. >> we were without heat for two and a half days. >> i have a 4 1/2-year-old at home and i have to support, and it's tough. >> it's clear this crippling winter blast is not over yet with more snow coming. >> and we are expecting heavy snow here through friday, after that, it's expected to warm up. even then residents won't be in the clear. tha

but the snow removal has been a top priority. in south buffalost-had hit areas, 1600 dump trucks trying to load up that snow and get it off the streets before the temperatures start to warm up. >> all right, alexandra freeland, do stay safe there. stay safe there. thank you so much. >>> we're just a couple hours away from a news briefing coming up at noon eastern in buffalo with the latest on the snow crisis and flood threat. >> senator charles schumer of new york is expected to be at that briefing. but joining us from the phone chautaugua, new york, what can you tell us about the situation and the fears that you're trying to prepare for? >> caller: yes, sure. this morning was the first time i drove to the outreach center this morning with all the roads plowed down to pavement, that's the main arteries. that's the first time that the patrol vehicle was not in four-wheel drive. all the main arteries are down to the pavement. now we're focusing on the secondaries and the side streets and getting the roads open and getting people out of their house

thvrs the view from downtown buffalo just yesterday. you can see the clouds moving over lake erie and now let's show you what was left behind. jennifer gray has been climbing snow mounds all day. jennifer, what's the story where you are? >> reporter: you know, jake, martin was talking about moving this snow out. these bulldozers have been pushing the snow on to the corners of streets and then putting it into big dump trucks and taking it off and when you push that snow, 40, 50, 60 inches of snow into the corner of a street, this is what you get. we are standing on top of a mound that is probably 13 feet high and you have these all over the city. the problem now is, though, it's a race against time. we only have about 45 minutes of daylight left and the snow has just started to come down again in the last hour. this isn't even the main event. the lake-effect snow will set up later tonight and it will run through friday morning. we could possibly see two to three additional feet of snow and so that is going to mean even bigger problems for
