as mentioned in the previous presentation, the excelsior has the largest in each of the categories. the five other top categories are listed. the next slide shows the huge proportion. the darkest eras are where there is the highest proportion. you will see some differences in the presidio, which has a small population in general, so it seemed like a higher proportion of youth. the next segment looks of families living in poverty. again, this the data taken from 2000. we are anxious to see what has happened in the past decade. our last slide is a snapshot of how public school students kindergarten through 12th grade, how they are doing on academic achievement. the darkest eras are where the scores are the lowest. again, the southeast sector, lots of similarities with poverty statistics as well. i am going to move quickly through these next few slides and highlight thing that might be of interest to you so that we can have time for your feedback and questions at the end. generally, we are organizing our needs assessment looking a different age groups. the first one looks at ages 0 thr

we are talking about a working- class community, the excelsior, the bayview, all of these different neighborhoods are smaller enclaves. we still see the same kinds of challenges. when the schools begin to perform a stellar academic programs, businesses will continue to relocate because the employees will want to live in san francisco and want kids to be educated here. it is a cyclical and symbiotic creation ship. another challenges that we have the highest unemployment rate in this part of san francisco. san francisco before, the numbers are starting to come down a little bit. we have high rates in the latter part of last year, but it is starting to -- it is starting to normalize. it goes back to education. what i would like to see our pathways. not everyone will become a doctor, lawyer, or journalist, fantastic tv host. what can we do? we live in a society where we need engineers. we need sound engineers. we need graphic designers. there are people who prefer to learn with their hands. they like mechanics. we need to bring back some shop back in schools and allow people an opportunity for a diff

to assist in the launch in the summer of 2010, run programming at the city college, the boys and girls club in excelsior. that is mostly because of the courses we are teaching and requirements for the digital media courses, for the design and fabrication courses where we need have access to wood and metal shops. we were using those facilities. we do anticipate that as the program grows -- this summer, we have 100 applications in 436 openings. as a program grows, we will begin to branch out and use some of the clubhouses in the local area. >> it just strikes me, because it is a program run out of rec and park, you can use our facilities. we have a number of clubhouses that i know nicole was talking about. currently, it is not being run out of any of our properties. so the idea is the eventually, you will get the building refurbished, usable, and then issue a lease with a nonprofit, but we are a couple of years out from doing that. >> probably four years. >> so the purpose of this presentation is to update us? >> this was properly we took on in 2004. it seems like a lot of you have not heard about it, so

[applause] >> this one is for my dad in heaven and my mom and my brothers. i want to say that when i got my first teaching job for the peace corps in morocco, i never thought i would come back to the united states, and i took a lot of teaching jobs and climbed all over the world, and they sometimes intervene in the very same way. 14 years ago, i was allowed to interview in high school that nobody wanted to go to in san francisco, and a net even inspired fear in some community members, and that was balboa. i want to tell you that it was the best place for me at the time, and it is still the best place. i think it has become one of the best high schools, and it is because of all the teachers and students who have been there in the last 14 years and sort of made it what it was. i would not wish to be anywhere else. thank you. includes higher-risk youngsters, headstart families, and 1200 seniors from the intermission and the excelsior. we operate 10 different facilities. most recently, we opened a center in bayview hunters point through a collaborative effort. as you are well aware, but you hunters point is probably the most toxic area in the city and county of san francisco. it is also the area that most low-income folks are moving to. in response to primarily the relocation of low-income families in the mission, we formed a collaborative and introduced a continuum of care facility, providing services to 34 children, all children of working, poor, low-income families. i am proud to say we are here this evening in support of the rebuild plans of cpmc, including the rebuild of st. luke's hospital. we are not here to tell cpmc how to work with community, but rather to say that we appreciate that cpmc knocked on our door when we first moved in to bayview hunters point and asked how they could assist in providing services directly to the bayview child health center, the only child facility in the bayview hunters point
