mona hanna-attisha, the flint pediatrician who helped expose the dangerous levels of lead in flint, michigan'snking water after testing blood lead leveles in children. in 2016, time magazine named mona one of the 100 most influential people in the world. her new book is titled "what the eyes don't see: a story of crisis, resistance, and hope in an american city." she recently came to our studios tiered at we sat down for an interview, and i asked her to describe the situation in flint today. isour water quality definitely improving, absolutely getting better. certainly after we released the findings that children's blood levels were elevated it we switched back. but the 18 months we were on that corrosive water, it ate up our pipes. they are being replaced, but that does not happen overnight. we have abouout 9000 to go. until those pipes are all replaced, people still need to be unfiltered water or bottled water. back to theo beginning. some people have heard about floodwater, maybe others have not. tell us the story of what actually took place. >> michigan has a c crazy law tt if you are in a

the late 1930s, who sat down for something called flint sitdown strikes for 44 days and car plants to many their share of prosperity. it took the personal intervention of the then governor of michigan, and franklin roosevelt's, president roosevelt to end that strike. and finally the uaw was recognized. what happened something called the grand bargain. this was born in flint which created living wages which created benefits, which created amazing school system which was afforded to about 300 school districts which created prosperity. those wages that were informed in flint were spread throughout the country. that is the loyalty the flint, the recent that i know in flint. at one point because of all that link has the highest per capita income in the country. can you believe that? the wages were the highest in the country and because of that at some the best public health indices, but that's changed significantly over the last few decades. as you flint has some from disinvestment, unemployment, poverty, racism, population loss, crumbling schools, really being stored by state budget and cuts to revenue-sharing which has put in a state of crisis with for the past 40 years even before th
