and there is more new reporting that we'll get to in a moment from the journal. there are also reports that this plane sent out pingings of data several hours after the last transponder signal. again i said it a while ago, the "the wall street journal" suggesting up to five hours. and the journal now reporting the last ping came while the plane was over water. and then there is this. fox news is just concerned the u.s. navy is moving the uss kidd into the indian ocean to search for remnants of the jet. all of this suggests the plane may have done that after taking off, after all. it could have ended up anywhere in this circle, over 2500 miles from where the plane originally was. that would make the potential search area about the size of six united states. we begin with our chief intelligence correspondent catherine herridge reporting from washington. >> reporter: and confirming to fox news, they sent periodic pushes of data after the transponder went dark, suggesting that it could fly, but this transponder did not suggest a location, shutting down the transponder

talked to andy pastor about it from the "wall street journal." you had reported officials you were talking to believe the plane ended up in the ocean. how can they believe that if we are led to believe this plane went for some five hours? how are they saying it ended up in the water? definitively? what lead them to that conclusion? >> reporter: no. i mean, let me start with this. nothing is detfinitive in this story other than the plane is missing. they have made some calculations based on this technical data. and what they believe the flight path would have been if they could have calculated it based on the radar returns, the so-called blips or pings from what they believe the airplane was, an airplane flying out four to five hours over the indian ocean. it was an air frame that matched the description and the engine type on this malaysia airlines flight. there was no other aircraft in the region at the time that matched that technical description, that matched the data. the flblips coming off the plan. so definitive, no. but good reason to beli

the "wall street journal" was not reporting we had new transponder data like that. they were reporting today very specifically that we had engine date to from the missing airplane. a new source of information from long after the other potential sources of information on that plane stopped sending out anything. potentially a huge break in this case. potentially a huge lead for finding out what happened to the plane. but that was a huge break in this case that only lasted about 12 hours. just after 3:00 p.m. this afternoon the "wall street journal" took it back, took the whole engine data development back. they said that their early version of the story, the big front-page version, was incorrect in the sense that american investigators, they said, actually did not have access to engine data from the plane at all. it's heartbreaking, right? i mean, that's what this story has been like all along. somewhere between gut wrenching and heartbreaking. it has been wrenching just to watch the story. just to try to cover the story the way it has unfolded. imagine what it must be

i asked is the journal article correct? the answer was no. >> which is congruent with what the malaysians have let out most recently. >> correct. so to anybody who hasn't actually got the pieces of information left, you really have got no idea frankly. i mean, until somebody stands up -- i suppose we have to go with always with what the minister said because he's the only person who's in a position to know. and he says quite clearly that information doesn't exist. but i'm told the journal's standing by its story. >> so as we cover plane crashes, and there have been myriads since i began my career 26 years ago in broadcasting, there seems to be some resolution no matter what fairly proximate to the time of the crash, some kind of resolution. and perhaps the reason why so many people are so fixated on this mystery flight is because there's so much misinformation. is this a factor of bad management on the part of the malaysian government? or is there something more afoot? >> i'm going to just take that. it's not that there's mi

the "journal" was first to report today, the u.s. attorney in manhattan, his office had sent a subpoena on friday to governor chris christie's top appointee at the port authority. a man who remains at his job as chairman of the port authority, david samson. the "journal" reported and nbc news later confirmed the subpoena for documents from david samson was part of a new federal criminal investigation into potential conflicts of interest between mr. samson's private business interests and his actions as chairman of the port authority. it has been extensively reported since the scandal broke open that david samson, a key political ally of chris christie, the chairman of chris christie's transition team, himself is a former attorney general for the state of new jersey. it has been extensively reported since this scandal broke that david samson has cast votes or otherwise taken official action as chairman of the port authority that appear to have benefited his private law firm's clients. and thus indirectly at least benefited his own fin
