the microsoft case is an important part of that story. it is fitting that we have gathered here today to discuss it, but i should make one thing very clear, and right from the start. while the microsoft antitrust controversy in retrospect offers several important lessons, it was no panacea. on the one hand, we must avoid treating it as a sort of permission slip to ramp up enforcement of entities or markets that bear superficial similarity to the microsoft story. on the other hand, while markets change rapidly and technology evolves at a dizzying pace these days, the most basic laws of economics persist. the world we occupy today is in many ways different from the world in which microsoft fell under such scrutiny, but what experience taught us then remains relevant. so, what are some of the important lessons we can learn from the microsoft experience? first, that the technology sector is an integral part of our economy. it is bound to become all the more important as we race further into the 21st century. these days, our digital ecosystem i
