it's not some mysterious mechanism the nra pus in plait. -- put in place. stand your ground is exactly the same as the old-fashioned self-defense except for that one element of avoidance. so if you live in a stand your ground jurisdiction and you act in self-defense, what do you still need to be able to prove? you were the innocent person, you were facing an imminent threat, you were using no more force necessary than to defend yourself, and everything you did is reasonable. the non-stand your ground states, even if you've done all that, if you can't prove a negative, the you can't prove there was no avenue of retreat, we reserve the option to put you in jail for the rest of your life. that's what it means. so, thank god you live in a stand your ground state here in north carolina. now, think about what the consequences would be of a repeal of stand your ground. imagine a young woman named mary. she's walking through a parking garage at night. she's accosted by a rapist. she's had, she's done nothing to invite this attack upon her. the attack's about to happ

rosenburg, the nra's chief lobbyist chris cox said they were promoting an idea that gun are ownership is a disease that needs to be eradicated. should the cdc not be the place where this research is conducted? >> first you need to realize when people don't like the results that they're getting from honest scientific research, they try to discourage the researchers and the methods. the nra did not like the research that suggested that having a firearm at your home does not protect you but puts you at 300% more risk that someone in your family will be killed in a homicide and 500% more risk that someone in your family will be killed in a suicide. so the nra didn't like the fact that the research, very legitimate, high-quality research, showed that putting a gun in your home did not protect you. cdc is the only background and the epidemiologic skills to look at the picture, the picture of mental illness and what happens when the adjudicated mentally ill have firearms. the department of justice can look at what happens when convicted felons and criminals have firearms. but the cdc has the

is this a smart refocusing for the nra? >> no, their pr over theangry as terrific. is is another example. i don't understand why the son is proud of his father just for being a voter. it seems to work pretty well as an ad to try to drive voter registration. the democrats were the ones who got really good at this in 2012. they used microtargeting and all sorts of other, you know, high-tech ways of increasing voter registration, particularly among their core constituencies. and we're now seeing the republicans starting to close the gap, although as mark indicated, gun owners have always voted in large numbers. but the problem for democrats is they don't vote in midterms. people like these nra voters do. and that means trouble for the democrats. >> there are some surprises like an ohenry story. >> it's not a gun. it's a voter registration end. lovely looking family. they are reaching out to others, not just families. there's this one promoting making firearms education compulsory in schools like reading and writing. how popular is that sentiment? >> again, they have a v

this was definitely not something that we invented and it wasn't something that the nra invented. gain, the book i think that's a very good job of spelling out the collective rights point of view but this misses some of the sources. i was surprised not to see any reference to the book for example to st. george tucker who in 1803 has treaties on reviewing and spelled out the second amendment as it is going back to the construction of the right of the self-preservation. william, another very influential scholar writing in the 1820s into the treatise also on the constitution dow fod the second amendment to be an individual right and he was very well-positioned on that matter as a member of the pennsylvania assembly he actually ratified the second amendment and the other divisions in the bill of rights not mentioned in the book and adopting the individual rights model and even the american bar association, not exactly a right-wing militia organization to the fellow that wrote an essay of the model of the second amendment. so we see that this goes well beyond modern-day attorneys and ot
