it's been more than three months since protestsy rupted in the streets of oakland following the verdict in the johannes mehserle trial. as we approach sentencing, both sides are hoping to sway the judge as he determines if johannes mehserle should spend time behind bars for the killing of oscar grant. >> we show this young man and his family some justice. please don't endorse this shooting by giving less than the maximum sentence. >> today the grant family attorney read from some of the 4,000 letters and postcards given to him in advance of sentencing. he is packing then up today to send them to the court. he says this coordinated effort has drawn from many parts of the community. >> these are from a cross section of people throughout the community. a lot of students, a lot of community individuals, church groups, church members, community groups, all of whom have expressed an interest. >> there are already dozens of letters in the hands of judge the judge. according to the latest numbers given to us by the los angeles county superior court, there have been 7 # letters and postcards sen

the disagree over the oakland airport connector may not be over. the extension, just over three miles, will curb the bart bus and provide train actress to the terminal. the project will cost $434 million. bart hasn't named the price riders will pay. the transit agency says if more people don't ride the train to the airport compared to the current bus service, it may have to charge as much as $6 to hop aboard. that's a steep increase from the $3 bus ride. >> for more than one person that would be pretty bad, i mean if you were traveling two or three people at a time. >> whatever they charge i'm going to pay it, so it's better than parking your car. >> bart says the project will provide much-needed jobs. it's expected to be complete in 2014. that's when bart plans to name the price to ride. >>> installation of a second tower on the new eastern span of the bay bridge was supposed to begin this week but the project has been shelved at least until next week. this is a follow-up on a story we first brought you on tuesday. transportation leaders say they h

kris sanchez is live in the oakland hills this morning. one of the places where they're seeing those dangerous high temperatures and there are the warnings and people are going to have to be alert today. kris. >> reporter: people are going to have to be alert today, brent. the red flag warning fires right around sunrise. not soon enough for some of the east bay firefighters who are right now as we speak fighting a brush fire they wish they weren't fighting this time of year. we just got off the phone with alameda county firefighters who are trying to contain a small brush fire in redwood regional park near the intersection of pinehurst road and redwood road. dispatch tells us that it is a small fire at the bottom of a hillside about a half acre right now and shouldn't be too much of a problem to put out but we know how quickly these brush fires can spread. this is a fire from last week in san jose. it just shows how quickly these things can move. it was a car fire that ran up the dry hillside and ended up nearly destroying a local radio sta

the oakland airport will be under attack this weekend. don't worry, it's not real, just part of the scenario base training examiner advertise and competition for dozens of law enforcement agencies from across the state. here is the fourth year that the alameda county sheriff office hosted urban shield, a competition aimed at preventing and disrupting terrorist attacks. starting at 6:00, more than two dozen s.w.a.t. teams will be tested. last year, there was an okay stack cle course outside. this year, there is a twist. competitors will rappel down the elevator shaft, 40 stories high. eight members of the oakland police s.w.a.t. teams are competing. the team would last year's competition but they say it's what happened after the drill that really counts. >> we bring all that training, all that experience that we are getting back to our city. if there were, you know, unfortunately some bad occurrence that's happened, we'll be able to deal with it accordingly. >> other drills include a mock siege by gang members of the san francisco city hall
