the march has begun to shut down the port of oakland. we want to show you as it is happening, on the right side of your screen, these are live pictures from chopper 5. as you can see, hundreds are marching that mile and a half to the port of oakland. on the left side of your screen, it is the emergency operations center, in oakland, as we await to hear from city officials. we are awaiting we believe from either the mayor, jean quan, or the police chief, acting police chief howard jordan. we know the protesters are part of a larger movement that is happening along the west coast. it is coordinated demonstration. at the major ports and this is the second time that we have seen this. in just two months. >> and this is really kicked into gear. rather quickly. about 5:00, there was about 50 people at the west oakland bart station and congregating, getting ready to go and once the bart train started, people commuted in and now as you can see, several hundred people are marching their way from that west oakland station, and as grace said, about

the port of oakland. police in riot gear are now moving in. >>jackie: there was a staging area with the alameda county sheriff's deputies in right here. those deputies just moved down 7 street towards the protesters. in the last 30 seconds or so of the oakland police department deputies have also put on their right here. i do not know what is happening down here but i can tell you that they walked on the right side of those trucks and if they started moving in in full riot gear down towards the protesters who have been down there for about three hours. is a relatively peaceful but obviously they decided now is the time to move in. they are accompanied by oakland police it was the alameda county deputies that mobilized and started heading toward the protesters about two-three minutes ago. >>mark: we have video coming in from one of the protesters. there you can see police in riot gear as they have now moved into position. we're watching and waiting to see what the police officers will decide to do. we have

close to 100 protesters met at the west oakland deportation and marched down to the port of oakland. from they are trying to shut down the forceful, allport's from santiago to anchorage alaska. back in september they were able to shut down the port for about six hour sphere if we're watching and waiting as we get closer to of the port opening. the mayor is fleeting with protesters not to shut down the port of oakland which would affect truckdrivers and other workers. the protesters say if they shut down the port they will be able to hurt the business is up and down the west coast. a live report from the scene coming up as the kron4 news continues fast protesters tried to shut down the port of oakland.

the latest tragedy. anne makovec is in oakland where the community members plan to march tonight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. several groups have been talking about a real lack of unity here in oakland. we have the recall petition for mayor jean quan. a glut of gun violence which has taken dozens of lives this year, and then tugging right now on everybody's heart strings, the death of that toddler. he is expected to be taken off life support today. here's his picture. hiram johnson is going to be honored at a peace march today. doctors are preparing to take him off life support at 1:00 this afternoon. that's after tests on the boy who is almost two years old showed no brain activity. hiram was shot last month in east oakland when a group of people shot into a crowd that had gathered for the filming of a rap video. seven other people were hurt and there have been no arrests in the case. hiram isn't the first baby to be innocently caught in crossfire. 3-year-old carlos nava was killed in east oakland earlier this year. that was a drive-by shooting on 64th and internation

>> well, clearly the port of oakland is unique in the sense that many urban areas have lost their good-paying blue collar jobs. a few cities still have these vibrant ports. oakland is particularly important to the country because we are the only port in the country, i believe, that exports more than we import, that we're particularly critical for the agriculture shipments. so that's why one of the reasons even a half day delay can cost loss to agriculture producers to we believe 800,000 jobs across the country are linked to the port of oakland because a lot of shipment of goods, west of the mississippi come through the port of oakland, and for this city in particular, that's been particularly hard hit by the recession. one of the reasons why -- i've only been there 11 months, i've spent a good deal of the time there, these are good-paying jobs. president obama says if we can double experts, we'll create 5,000 new jobs in the bay area. so when you are in that competitive market and when people decide, well, where are you going to send your goods to, this is a city that's been disrupted guy. we

the budget to avoid bankruptcy. allie rasmus joins us live in oakland. what will this mean for local postal deliveries and workers, allie? >> reporter: it will mean changes in the amount of time it takes to send and receive bills. magazines, catalogs, bills, statements, basically anything that requires a first-class postage stamp will be affected. right now, the most first class mail arrives one to three days after it's sent. come spring time, it's going to take longer. we talked to a spokesperson at the office about how delivery will be affected here. >> what will happen is any mail that would normally be delivered overnight for one of the possible facilities that are gonna close, there's only about two in sacramento and then there's two in the san francisco area. so if there were overnight service standards for those facilities, then, of course, it will now become two to three- day service. >> reporter: now, part of the reason for this is because the postal service is going to make some cuts. they announced plans to shut down about half of their mail pr
