they're known the central pacific jupiter and union pacific 119. those two locomotives have become two of the most famous locomotives in american railroading so being able to run those is a cool way to commemorate that. after the ceremony, a lot of pictures were taken and then the operation of the railroad became huge throughout the country. because they were trying to increase time and efficiency within these companies them, eventually the line that was passing through this area was bypassed. they built a trestle bridge and causeway from the nevada-utah border straight across the point of the promontory mountains that are just behind us straight into ogden. that cut about 80 miles of extra travel time, money, all of that, off of the operation of that transcontinental line. ogden became a huge hub for transporting troops and materials and supplies all across the country and would just have trains every hour coming in just unloading huge amounts of supplies or people and it became a major city, major thoroughfare for moving across the country. >> we

i've been watching these storm systems lining up in the pacific. the deal is last year at this time we did not have that scenario. we had this big blocking ridge right over us. that is going to be the case as we head throughout the next week or so. after that that, that ridge is going to break down and we are bulls eyeing our next chance for rain around the 13th to the 16th. all it's going to take are two to three good storm systems to bring us up to average for the month of october. it's going to take a lot of rain to get us out of the dry seasons we've had. good morning to you san jose. hey, livermore, beautiful conditions in the tri-valley today and then it's going to get hot out there. we're going to lose our natural a.c., that fog, which has settled into pacifica this morning. we'll see if the fog is impacting your drive with mike in moments. your sun will rise at 7:03. temperatures just a touch above average for today and your sun will set at about 6:57. you're not going to see a lot of the loaf cloud cover returning to the coast. as a result

next, we took on french nuclear testing in the south pacific. france was still detonating hydrogen atomic bombs in the air in the 1970's, sending radiation around the world. it took some years to drive these nuclear tests underground. as late as 1985, french commandos bombed and sank to the rainbow warrior killing our photographer. going back again to the 1970's, here i am driving a small rubber boat into the first encounter with these soviet factory whaling fleet in the north pacific in 1975. we confronted the whalers, putting ourselves in front of their happens -- their harpoons to protect the fleeing whales. that got us on television, bringing save the whales to everyone's living room for the first time. just four years later, whaling was banned in the north pacific. here i am sitting on a baby seal off the coast of newfoundland to protect it from the hunters' clubs. i was arrested and hauled off to jail. the seal was clogged and skinned. but this picture was in newspapers all around the world the next morning. this eventually brought changes
