i'm the president of friends of mclaren park. it is one of the oldest neighborhood community park groups in san francisco. i give a lot of tours through the park. during those tours, a lot of the folks in the group will think of the park as very scary. it has a lot of hills, there's a lot of dense groves. once you get towards the center of the park you really lose your orientation. you are very much in a remote area. there are a lot of trees that shield your view from the urban setting. you would simply see different groves that gives you a sense of freedom, of being outdoors, not being burdened by the worries of city life. john mclaren had said that golden gate park was too far away. he proposed that we have a park in the south end of the city. the campaign slogan was, people need this open space. one of the things that had to open is there were a lot of people who did a homestead here, about 25 different families. their property had to be bought up. so it took from 1928 to 1957 to buy up all the parcels of land that ended up in

there was a book about the trees at golden gate park. the panhandle and the eastern end of the park is full of trees that somebody in the department years ago had a real interest in and we have not been doing that for a long time. nobody has written a book about the trees we have been planting in the parks the last few years, so i think it would be good if we could get some attention on the department at some point. the third thing i wanted to highlight, again, the replanting at the golf courses. that was something i was not aware of because i am not a golfer, but that seems like something is broken their. at sharp park, there is almost nothing. except very mature and dying trees, so we need to have some kind of plan for the parks and squares and especially the golf courses. president lazarus: thank you. i share the view this is an important subject. i regret in a way that it came at the end of the meeting, but it was worth just listening to all. after all, what are the park's, if not at the beginning, places of nature that you can enjoy

we look at the city of oakland's waterfront trail. hudson river park in new york, and the blue waste plant in the city of vancouver, canada, and the one that most resembles our waterfront is the port of oakland's waterfront plan, which is a good example of some of the work that we can apply to the southern waterfront. as a part of best practices, we looked at sign it, how we can improve sign it to provide continuity on the system, site furnishings -- how we design and establish criteria for furnishings that are durable, made tenable, comfortable, and usable. and again, the idea of connections. how do we connect open spaces together down to the waterfront? a good example of this is in vancouver where they have lives that come down to the waterfront so that it is not a linear system that if you drop from at&t park to herons head park, you just have to jog back, but you might be able to look into the neighborhood and provide down to the water and back up into the neighborhood, so it is something we're looking at as part of the connector street along the b
