the topic is the future of peace corps. it's ever present in my mind, obviously, as the 20th director and as a return peace corps volunteer who served back in the agency's early years. i vividly remember standing in a classroom, my third day in country in front of 40, 13-year-old boys, as a volunteer in tunisia. i was 22 years old, nervous beyond belief, had no idea what my first words would be. i remember looking at them all thinking and going oh, my heavens. there's a door. i could walk out that door and be done. i knew my parents wouldn't be very happy if i showed up back home a couple months later nor would my husband who was happy having his first day as a peace corps volunteer. so i stepped forward, held my breath, and introduced myself in english. then i asked the students to introduce themselves. that day's lesson launched my two year volunteer service. two years that shaped my life and my career more than i could have dreamed or hoped for. at that time, however, i was most worried about my students' exams. i immerse

bruggeman: to be different, my parents were in the peace corps. also grew up in a family that was committed to service. they were both english teachers. i lived in a strong ex-pat community. coming home during the persian gulf war, it was front of mind for me that service was something i was interested in. i went to the naval academy from there. my military time in the marine corps was largely almost entirely positive. also, it was filled with micro-aggression along the way that were very challenging as a woman. it came to define my experience overall and truly who i've become to be and what i am passionate about now and how i give back. as a combat engineer, my field was as an mls and women were barred from one third from the mls. there were only two thirds of the marine corps i was allowed to go to. in an effort to ensure that my marines were trained in all three of those so they could go on, i had to make sure they had all the competencies. that required me being very forward leaning in terms of seeking out training from them and partnering unit
