to the families and friends and to pittsburgh's jewish community and to the larger community of pittsburgh. the jewish community of pittsburgh is one that we, as pittsburghers, treasure. it's an important part of the cultural and sociali identity o pittsburgh, and so this was an attack upon our neighbors and upon our friends and one that we felt very deeply. the fact that this attack took place during a worship service makes it even more heinous. a place of worship is a sacred place. it's a place of peace and a place of grace. it's a place where a community comes together to celebrate that that they hold most dear and most sacred. are and this, of course, is our first freedom as a people. so today, all over pennsylvania, men and women in similar places of worship are in prayer for our jewish brothers and sisters. so today, we stand together as a community, a community that rejects hatred and violence, a community where neighbors respect neighbors, where we embrace our religious diversity and we celebrate our differences. and together, we mourn those whose lives were lost. and we begin the

pittsburgh. and on this sunday night, this city is in pain. the whole country reaching out to pittsburgh after the massacre at the tree of life synagogue behind me. services were under way yesterday morning just before a baby naming ceremony when a gunman stormed in, taking 11 lives. police say he told them all he wanted to do was to kill jews. the calls for help went out just before 10:00 a.m., saying the synagogue was under attack. the officers arrived quickly, running, as they so often do, right into the gunfire. outside, the neighborhood on lockdown. officers rushing people away from the danger. inside, innocent members of this community were being gunned down. among the dead, a two brothers, a new grandfather, and a 97-year-old woman. six more were wounded, including four police officers.e gunman w survived. and he could now face the death penalty. the mayor calling this attack the darkest day of pittsburgh's history. and tonight, a vigil across town, where somebody told me, this is not pittsburgh. they are united tonight, and they say they w

our matt finn was there at the courthouse in pittsburgh. hello. >> reporter: 46-year-old robert bowers was wheeled in the courtroom. he is still recovering in the gun shot wounds he sustained after the shootout massacre at the tree of life. the judge read the suspected gunman all 29 federal charges against him, including using a firearm to commit murder, injury to a public safety officer and hate crimes. bowers was in court in hospital-issue garb. he seemed alert and of clear mind when answering yes and no. he acknowledged he received a copy of the criminal complaint filed against him by an fbi agent. that criminal complaint reveals disturbing details about the synagogue massacre, a portion of the complaint reads, quote, during the course of his deadly assault on people at the synagogue and simultaneously, with his gun fight with responding officers, bowers made statements convincing an an i must toward people of jewish faith. he commented to one law enforcement officer in substance, they are committing genocide to my people. i just want to
