as you know we have differing claims from the kenosha police union and the blake family and the blake family attorneys. i want to show our viewers some of those police association claims once again. how unusual is it for the police union, by the way, to start openly offering its own evidence by an outside agency. among other things they say blake fought with officers blark put an officer in a head lock, blake carried a knife he refused to drop, and the responded officers were aware of an outstanding arrest warrant against him. what do you say to those charges from the kenosha police officer association? >> oh, i think it's very important to note, wolf, this is not about what a union does or doesn't do. it's about this officer's conduct or misconduct. it's certainly not about what the officer did or what blake did before this occurred, whether he was fighting, whether he was not fighting, whether he was screaming, whether he was not screaming wlr, whether had a criminal record, whether he didn't. it's about what happened at the time he was shot. and the critical question there that we

this is the police union. what are they saying? >> yeah, it's interesting. we're not hearing this from the police chief. we're not hearing this from the police department. we're not hearing this from the department of justice, the state department of justice which is the investigating agency into the shooting. we're hearing this from the police union. this is what they are saying. they are accusing jacob blake of being armed with a knife. officers told him to drop it. he did not compile. they also say that he was there and they were called there because he had some keys and was attempting to steal the keys or the vehicle, that you-all saw when he turned his back to officers and the officers shot him seven times in the back. we are also seeing that they said they knew that he had a warrant out for him for third degree sexual assault at the time, that he was not compiling with them, that they tried their tasers on him more than once and the tasers failed to stop him and they said look, he was not breaking up a fight with someone that it was him that they were c

the back seven times. in this video taken by a witness, blake can be seen walking back to his car and police guns are drawn. the police unionays blake had a knife in his possession and was combative with officers. but that account is being disputed by blake's family. what else was the police union there saying about all this new information? >> reporter: yeah. remember, the police union obviously defending this officer the middle of this investigation they decided they needed to speak up because they felt there was inaccurate information. part of it is because investigators have not been talking about this. have released very limited information, so they felt the need to come out and give their version of events. as you said, this knife is becoming the key part of this investigation. the investigators said they did find a knife and that when they spoke to jacob blake that jacob blake admitted that he had this knife. they found the knife in the car. the key in all of this is what transpired as mr. blake is getting into the car with his back to officers and then that one officer firing seven times into his back. that is the k

there is no explanation yet from either authorities or from the police union as to why at that moment officers decided to fire their weapon. the other thing is that mr. blake was shackled. he remains -- he's paralyzed, as of right now, he's paralyzed, and the police had shackled him. and the reason is they say, it's protocol because he has a warrant, because he didn't come to court when he was supposed to. there was a warrant for his arrest. and as a result, that is why he was shackled. since news of that surfaced in the last two days, that has changed. police have removed the shackles. obviously, the family very upset over all of this. over what the police union has put out. the information they have put out. and, obviously, the fact that their son was shaebckled. here's mr. blake sr., the father of jacob blake, talking to anderson cooper about that. >> the minute they set a bond for my son, we paid the bond and they squashed the warrant. so, what was the point in demoralizing my son? >> i heard you talk at the march on washington today. one of the things you said, you talked about t

in the meantime, omar, the police union is responding, giving their side of the story. what are they saying? and how is the blake family responding? >> well, don, among their claims, they are saying that officers knew that jacob blake had an open warrant for sexual assault, before they arrived. they are saying that jacob blake was violent with them. that they were wrestling. that he even put an officer in a head lock. they're also saying that he was not unarmed. that he had a knife that officers did not initially see, until they were on the passenger side of the vehicle. their overall point is they claim that the narratives, many of the narratives, that have come out, so far, are inaccurate. and their account of the shooting is what really happened. now, jacob blake's family, as you can imagine, says it is completely garbage. and they were insulted by those statements. and their attorneys say that what's come out by the association is completely overblown. they say, specifically by the association's logic that, if there was a knife anywhere in the vicinity, then it give

the police chief, but we now know that they are not the investigating agency. it is the state department of justice that is the investigating agency. but we're now hearing these new details from the police union. the kenosha police union. i'm going to read a few things out here. these are things you have not yet heard before from an initial standpoint. they are talking about why they came up to encounter mr. blake, saying that he was not actually breaking up a fight between two other people, that, indeed, they were aware that he had a warrant out for his arrest, particularly the warrant that involved a charge of sexual assault. they say that mr. blake was not unarmed, that he had a knife in his possession. that the officers did not initially see the knife, but they were aware of the warrant. and then later, apparently, they told mr. blake, when they did see the knife, to drop the knife, drop the knife, and he did not comply. that is according to the kenosha police union. these are new details we hadn't heard before. they are coming out from an interesting spot. very different from any other police department or police investigation that i've ever covered, that we're getting information about
